When planning a Tanzania Great Migration safari, one of the most important decisions we make is not simply how many days to spend in the Serengeti, but where those days should be spent according to the traveller's dates.

For the July–October Northern Serengeti season, we allocate three nights and two full game-drive days in Northern Serengeti. In our safari planning experience, a single day around the Mara River is too restrictive for travellers whose main priority is the migration. Wildebeest can gather near the river and then remain there for hours, move to another crossing point or change direction completely. Having two full days gives the guide more flexibility to follow current herd movements rather than forcing the safari to leave simply because the itinerary says it is time to move on.

We also never promise a Mara River crossing. Crossings are natural events influenced by herd behaviour, rainfall, water and grazing conditions. No guide can accurately schedule the exact day or time a crossing will happen. What we can do is position guests in the right region, allow sufficient time and use current local information to maximise wildlife-viewing opportunities.

The same principle applies throughout the year. We would not recommend sending a traveller to Northern Serengeti in February simply because the package is called a “Great Migration Safari.” During the January–March calving season, we would normally shift the migration focus toward Ndutu and Southern Serengeti. During other months, Central, Western or Northern Serengeti may become more appropriate.

For us, a properly planned migration safari should follow the season rather than force the season to fit a fixed itinerary.

Expert Recommendation: When comparing Great Migration safaris, look beyond the number of days. Check where you will actually sleep in the Serengeti, how many full game-drive days you have in the migration region and whether the route matches your travel month. Those details often matter more than the tour title itself.
