Is 12 Days Enough for a Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar Beach Holiday?
Yes. Twelve days gives most first-time visitors enough time to experience Tanzania's major Northern Circuit wildlife areas and still enjoy several nights in Zanzibar without making the trip feel rushed. The key is not trying to include every national park.
This itinerary concentrates the safari around Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro before continuing to Zanzibar. Spending multiple nights in or around the Serengeti provides more meaningful game-viewing time, while the Zanzibar portion creates a slower finish after the early mornings and longer safari days.
Why Choose This 12-Day Tanzania Safari & Beach Holiday?
This itinerary is designed for travellers who want to experience Tanzania’s major northern wildlife destinations and still have enough time to unwind in Zanzibar. Rather than trying to include too many parks, the route concentrates on Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro, followed by four nights on the Indian Ocean coast.
- More Time in the Serengeti: Multiple nights give you more opportunities for morning and afternoon game drives and reduce the need to rush through Tanzania’s best-known safari ecosystem.
- Safari and Beach in One Journey: Experience classic African wildlife viewing before changing pace completely with four nights on the white-sand beaches of Zanzibar.
- Private 4×4 Safari Land Cruiser: Your safari operates in a private Land Cruiser with a professional guide, allowing greater flexibility with game-drive timings, photography stops and wildlife sightings.
- Well-Balanced Route: Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro provide contrasting landscapes and wildlife experiences without adding unnecessary one-night stops simply to increase the number of destinations.
- Fly from Arusha to Zanzibar: An internal flight connects the safari and beach portions efficiently, giving you more holiday time rather than spending an additional day travelling overland.
- Flexible for Different Travellers: The itinerary can be adapted for couples, honeymooners, families and private groups, with accommodation ranging from comfortable mid-range camps to luxury safari lodges and Zanzibar beach resorts.
12 Days Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar Highlights
From elephant country in Tarangire and the open plains of the Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Crater and Zanzibar’s Indian Ocean beaches, this journey combines some of Tanzania’s most distinctive wildlife and coastal experiences.
- Explore Tarangire National Park – Enjoy game drives among ancient baobab trees and landscapes well known for elephants, with opportunities to see giraffes, zebras, wildebeest and predators.
- Spend Three Nights Around the Serengeti – Allow more time for game viewing across the Serengeti rather than treating it as a quick overnight stop, with opportunities to search for lions, cheetahs, leopards and large herbivore herds.
- Experience the Serengeti's Seasonal Great Migration – Depending on your travel dates and natural herd movements, your safari may encounter migrating wildebeest and zebras. Migration locations, river crossings and individual wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.
- Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater – Explore the crater floor on a dedicated game drive, looking for wildlife including buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, lions, hippos and, with luck, the endangered black rhino.
- Travel in a Private 4×4 Safari Land Cruiser – Enjoy private game drives with your own professional safari guide, pop-up roof and flexibility for wildlife viewing and photography.
- Fly from Arusha to Zanzibar – Transition conveniently from Tanzania's northern safari circuit to the Indian Ocean, avoiding unnecessary overland travel and preserving more time for the beach.
- Relax for Four Nights in Zanzibar – Slow down after the safari with white-sand beaches, warm Indian Ocean waters and time for swimming, relaxation and resort activities.
- Choose Optional Zanzibar Experiences – Add activities such as a Stone Town tour, spice farm visit, snorkelling, diving or a traditional dhow excursion according to your interests.

Seasonal Pricing
The prices above should be treated as the standard starting rates for this itinerary. Travel during high-demand periods—including parts of July–October and the Christmas/New Year festive season—may attract accommodation, flight or seasonal supplements.
Great Migration-focused variations that replace Central Serengeti accommodation with camps in Northern Serengeti or Ndutu may also change the price because accommodation rates, routing and park/conservation costs can differ.

12 Days Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar Route Map & Travel Times
Understanding the travel times between destinations makes it easier to plan your 12 Days Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar Beach Holiday. Driving times are approximate and can vary according to road conditions, traffic, weather and wildlife stops.
On safari days, some transfers also include game viewing along the way, so travelling between destinations can form part of the safari experience rather than simply being a road transfer.

Important Travel-Time Information
Safari driving times should be treated as estimates rather than fixed schedules. Road conditions, seasonal weather, wildlife activity, park traffic and stops made during the journey can affect the actual travel time.
Because this is a private Tanzania safari in a 4×4 Land Cruiser, your guide also has flexibility to adjust game-drive timing and make worthwhile wildlife stops along the route.
Safari to Zanzibar Travel
This itinerary does not include a direct flight from the Serengeti to Zanzibar.
After leaving the Central Serengeti, you continue to the Ngorongoro area. On Day 7, you explore Ngorongoro Crater before driving approximately 3–4 hours to Arusha, where you stay overnight.
On Day 8, you transfer to Arusha Airport and fly to Zanzibar, with the flight normally taking approximately 1–1.5 hours. After landing, your private driver transfers you approximately 1.5–2 hours to Nungwi on Zanzibar's northern coast.
For full details about the domestic flight, baggage arrangements and airport transfers, see the How Do You Travel From the Safari to Zanzibar? section below.
Detailed 12-Day Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport – Transfer to Arusha
Welcome to Tanzania. On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be met by our representative and transferred privately to your hotel in Arusha. The drive normally takes around 1–1.5 hours, depending on traffic and the location of your hotel.
Arusha is the main gateway to Tanzania's Northern Safari Circuit and provides a convenient place to rest before beginning your overland safari. After checking in, the remainder of the day is at leisure. Depending on your arrival time, you can relax at the hotel, enjoy the gardens or simply recover from your international journey.
Your safari guide will confirm the following morning's departure time and provide a short briefing covering the route, game-drive arrangements and practical safari information. Enjoy a good night's rest before departing for Tarangire National Park the following morning.
Accommodation: Arusha hotel
Meals: According to arrival time and hotel arrangement
Driving Time: Kilimanjaro International Airport → Arusha: approximately 1–1.5 hours
Day 2: Arusha – Tarangire National Park Safari
After breakfast, meet your private safari driver-guide and depart Arusha for Tarangire National Park, approximately 2–2.5 hours away. Starting in Tarangire works particularly well because the park is within comfortable driving distance of Arusha, allowing you to begin wildlife viewing without spending most of your first safari day on the road.
Tarangire is known for its impressive baobab trees, open savannah, seasonal wetlands and the Tarangire River. Elephants are among the park's best-known residents, while giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, impalas and numerous bird species may also be encountered. Lions and leopards are present, although all wildlife sightings remain natural and cannot be guaranteed.
Enjoy a game drive through different areas of the park, with your guide adjusting the route according to wildlife activity and road conditions. Stop for lunch during the day before continuing your afternoon game drive. Later, proceed to your lodge or tented camp for dinner and overnight.
Accommodation: Tarangire/Karatu area lodge or tented camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Driving Time: Arusha → Tarangire: approximately 2–2.5 hours
Game Drive: Afternoon / as time permits
Day 3: Tarangire – Ngorongoro Highlands – Serengeti National Park
After breakfast, depart for Serengeti National Park, travelling through the changing landscapes of northern Tanzania and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. This is one of the longer road sectors of the safari, so an earlier departure allows enough time for the transfer while still leaving useful wildlife-viewing time after entering the Serengeti. A picnic lunch is normally carried so the day's schedule remains flexible.
As you continue toward the Serengeti, the landscape gradually changes from the elevated Ngorongoro highlands to the expansive plains for which the Serengeti ecosystem is famous. Wildlife viewing begins as conditions allow, with possible sightings of zebras, giraffes, wildebeest, gazelles, elephants and predators.
After entering Serengeti National Park, continue with an afternoon game drive en route to your tented camp in the central Serengeti. Staying here for three consecutive nights avoids unnecessary packing and gives you two complete days to explore different wildlife areas according to current sightings and seasonal conditions.
Accommodation: Central Serengeti tented camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Driving Time: Approximately 5–7 hours, including transit and wildlife stops
Game Drive: Afternoon / en route
Day 4: Full-Day Serengeti National Park Safari
Wake up in the Serengeti and prepare for a full day devoted to wildlife viewing. An early start is recommended because temperatures are cooler and many animals, including predators, can be particularly active during the first hours of daylight.
Rather than following a fixed circuit, your guide will plan today's route according to recent wildlife sightings, seasonal movements, road conditions and information shared between professional safari guides. Depending on conditions, you may explore open grasslands, rocky kopjes, river valleys and woodland habitats in search of lions, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos and antelopes. Cheetahs and leopards are also present, although sightings cannot be guaranteed.
You may return to camp for lunch or carry a picnic lunch when wildlife activity makes it worthwhile to remain farther afield. Having a complete day available means there is no need to rush toward another destination, giving your guide greater flexibility to follow promising wildlife activity before returning to camp for dinner.
Accommodation: Central Serengeti tented camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Game Drive: Full day
Day 5: Second Full-Day Serengeti Safari – Wildlife & Seasonal Great Migration
Today provides another complete day in the Serengeti, allowing you to explore areas that could not be covered during the previous day's game drive. Spending three nights in the Serengeti is one of the strengths of this 12-day Tanzania safari and Zanzibar itinerary because your wildlife experience is not limited to a single rushed visit.
Your guide may concentrate on river valleys, open plains, rocky kopjes or woodland habitats depending on recent sightings and seasonal conditions. Look for resident predators such as lions, cheetahs and leopards, together with elephants, giraffes, buffaloes and large herds of plains game.
The Serengeti forms part of the wider Great Migration ecosystem. Depending on your travel month, rainfall and natural herd movements, migrating wildebeest and zebras may be encountered. The exact game-drive area is therefore kept flexible rather than promising a particular migration location months in advance. Migration movements, river crossings and individual wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Accommodation: Central Serengeti tented camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Game Drive: Full day
Day 6: Serengeti → Ngorongoro Conservation Area / Karatu
After breakfast, enjoy a final morning game drive in the Serengeti National Park before beginning the journey toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Karatu.
The drive provides another opportunity to look for wildlife as you leave the Serengeti plains. Depending on the route, road conditions and wildlife activity, your guide can make worthwhile stops along the way before continuing toward the Ngorongoro highlands.
The landscape gradually changes from the open Serengeti plains to the greener, elevated scenery around Ngorongoro. Arrive at your lodge in the late afternoon or early evening, with time to relax and prepare for an early start the following morning.
Staying near Ngorongoro tonight places you in a convenient position for your Day 7 Ngorongoro Crater safari without adding unnecessary driving before the game drive.
Accommodation: Country Lodge Karatu or similar
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Approx. Driving Time: 3–4 hours, excluding extended wildlife stops
Game Drive: Morning and en route, depending on timing
Day 7: Ngorongoro Crater Safari – Return to Arusha
After an early breakfast, drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and descend approximately 600 metres into the Ngorongoro Crater for a morning game drive.
The crater floor contains a remarkable variety of habitats within a relatively compact area, including open grassland, woodland, wetlands and seasonal water sources. During your game drive, you may encounter wildebeest, zebras, buffaloes, gazelles, warthogs, hippos, hyenas and lions, together with numerous bird species.
Ngorongoro is also one of the areas in northern Tanzania where black rhinos may occasionally be seen, although sightings are never guaranteed.
Spend approximately 4–5 hours exploring the crater floor, with a picnic lunch during the safari. Your guide will adjust the game-drive route according to wildlife activity, road conditions and the time available.
After the crater safari, ascend from Ngorongoro and continue by road to Arusha, a journey of approximately 3–4 hours.
You will stay overnight in Arusha rather than rushing to connect with a Zanzibar flight on the same day. This provides a more comfortable transition between the safari and beach portions of your holiday and positions you conveniently for your scheduled flight from Arusha to Zanzibar the following day.
Accommodation: Arusha Planet Lodge or similar
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch; dinner according to hotel arrangement
Ngorongoro Crater Game Drive: Approximately 4–5 hours
Approx. Driving Time – Ngorongoro to Arusha: 3–4 hours
Day 8: Fly from Arusha to Zanzibar – Transfer to Nungwi
After breakfast at your Arusha hotel, transfer to Arusha Airport for your scheduled domestic flight to Zanzibar, beginning the beach portion of your Tanzania holiday.
The Arusha to Zanzibar flight normally takes approximately 1–1.5 hours, although the exact departure time, airline and routing will depend on the confirmed flight schedule for your travel date.
On arrival at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar, you will be met by your private transfer driver and continue approximately 1.5–2 hours to Nungwi, on Zanzibar's northern coast.
Check into The Z Hotel Zanzibar or a comparable Nungwi beach resort, subject to availability. The remainder of the day is intentionally left free after the active safari portion of your journey. Relax beside the pool, walk along the white-sand beach, swim in the Indian Ocean or simply enjoy the resort at your own pace.
You will spend the next four nights in Nungwi, giving you time for both beach relaxation and optional Zanzibar experiences.
Accommodation: The Z Hotel Zanzibar or comparable Nungwi beach resort
Meals: Breakfast included; confirmed Zanzibar meal plan according to your final quotation
Flight: Arusha → Zanzibar, approximately 1–1.5 hours
Road Transfer: Zanzibar Airport → Nungwi, approximately 1.5–2 hours
Day 9: Zanzibar Beach Holiday – Relax on the Indian Ocean
Today is intentionally left free for you to enjoy Zanzibar's tropical coastline at your own pace. After several days of structured safari activities, there is no fixed sightseeing schedule, allowing you to decide whether you prefer a completely relaxing day or something more active.
After breakfast, spend the morning swimming, walking along the beach, relaxing beside the pool or simply enjoying your resort. Zanzibar's coastline varies considerably by location, and tidal changes can be particularly noticeable along parts of the east coast, creating changing beach conditions throughout the day.
If you would like to be more active, optional water-based experiences can be arranged depending on your resort location, weather and sea conditions. These may include snorkelling, diving, kayaking or boat excursions. Alternatively, keep the entire day free and enjoy the slower rhythm of Zanzibar.
Accommodation: Zanzibar beach resort
Meals: According to selected resort meal plan

Day 10: Zanzibar – Optional Stone Town & Spice Farm Experience
Enjoy another day in Zanzibar, either relaxing at your beach resort or adding an optional cultural experience. A popular combination is a visit to Stone Town and a Zanzibar spice farm, offering an opportunity to discover another side of the island beyond its beaches.
In Stone Town, explore narrow streets, historic buildings, local markets and architectural influences connected with Zanzibar's long trading history. A spice farm visit provides an introduction to some of the tropical plants, fruits and spices cultivated on the island, with what you see varying naturally according to the season.
If sightseeing is not part of your holiday plans, simply remain at the resort for another uninterrupted beach day. This flexibility is intentional. After several active safari days, you do not need a scheduled excursion every day for the itinerary to feel complete.
Return to or remain at your beach resort for another relaxing evening.
Accommodation: Zanzibar beach resort
Meals: According to selected resort meal plan
Optional Experience: Stone Town & spice farm tour
Day 11: Zanzibar Beach Leisure – Optional Snorkelling, Diving or Dhow Experience
Your final full day in Zanzibar remains flexible, allowing you to enjoy the island according to your interests. Spend the day relaxing on the beach, swimming in the Indian Ocean or enjoying the facilities at your resort.
For travellers looking for a more active final day, optional marine experiences may include snorkelling, scuba diving or a traditional dhow excursion, depending on your beach location, sea conditions and availability. Activities are best selected according to the part of Zanzibar where you are staying rather than adding lengthy road transfers simply to fit another excursion into the itinerary.
If relaxation is your priority, keep the day completely free. Enjoy a leisurely lunch, take a final walk along the beach and spend the afternoon beside the ocean as your Tanzania safari and Zanzibar holiday draws to a close.
Spend your final night at the Zanzibar beach resort.
Accommodation: Zanzibar beach resort
Meals: According to selected resort meal plan
Optional Experiences: Snorkelling, scuba diving or dhow excursion
Day 12: Zanzibar Beach Resort – Airport Transfer & Departure
Enjoy your final breakfast in Zanzibar and, depending on your international flight schedule, some free time at the resort before checking out.
Your private driver will collect you at the agreed time for the transfer to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport. The journey generally takes approximately 1–2 hours depending on your resort location, traffic and road conditions. Your pickup time will therefore be planned around your confirmed departure flight rather than using a fixed transfer schedule.
Arrive at the airport with sufficient time for check-in and departure formalities. Your 12 Days Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar Beach Holiday concludes after combining Tarangire's baobab landscapes and elephants, three nights in the Serengeti, a Ngorongoro Crater safari and four nights beside the Indian Ocean.
Additional Zanzibar nights, alternative beach resorts or onward travel arrangements can be added when customizing your final itinerary.
Meals: Breakfast or according to resort meal plan
Transfer: Zanzibar beach resort → Abeid Amani Karume International Airport
Overnight: None – departure
Best Time for Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar
This 12 Days Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar Beach Holiday can be enjoyed throughout the year, but the experience changes with Tanzania's seasons. The best time for your trip depends on whether your priority is the Great Migration, general wildlife viewing, fewer visitors, greener landscapes or Zanzibar beach time.
Because this itinerary combines Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro with four nights in Nungwi, Zanzibar, it is worth considering conditions in both northern Tanzania and on the coast when choosing your travel month.
| Travel Period | Safari Conditions | Serengeti & Great Migration | Zanzibar | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January–March | Green landscapes and productive wildlife viewing; some afternoon rain is possible | Migration herds are often associated with the Southern Serengeti/Ndutu ecosystem, with the calving period generally occurring during this season | Warm tropical conditions with good opportunities for beach time, although weather can vary | Calving-season safaris, photography, couples & safari-beach combinations |
| April–May | Wetter period with lush scenery; some roads can become muddy and wildlife may be more dispersed | Herds gradually move away from the southern plains, with location depending heavily on rainfall | Higher chance of rain and humidity; some hotels or activities may operate on reduced schedules | Travellers comfortable with wetter conditions, greener scenery & potentially fewer safari vehicles |
| June | Conditions generally become drier and wildlife viewing improves as the dry season develops | Migration movements vary, with herds often progressing through western/central areas depending on rainfall | Generally improving beach conditions as the drier period begins | Safari travellers wanting a transition between green and dry seasons |
| July–October | Dry-season conditions generally provide excellent wildlife viewing, particularly around permanent water sources | Migration-focused itineraries may use the Northern Serengeti during part of this period; river crossings are possible but never guaranteed | Typically one of the more popular periods for a Zanzibar beach holiday, with generally drier conditions | First-time visitors, wildlife viewing, families, honeymooners & safari-beach holidays |
| November | Short rains can bring greener landscapes; rainfall is often intermittent rather than continuous | Herds may begin moving south again, although exact timing varies from year to year | Warm conditions with occasional showers; beach holidays remain possible | Repeat visitors, photography & travellers comfortable with variable weather |
| December | Green-season conditions begin returning, with good resident wildlife viewing | Migration herds generally continue their movement toward the southern ecosystem depending on rainfall | Warm tropical beach conditions; Christmas and New Year are high-demand travel periods | Festive holidays, couples, families & Christmas/New Year safari-beach trips |
When Is the Best Overall Time for This 12-Day Safari?
For travellers seeking dry-season wildlife viewing combined with a Zanzibar beach holiday, July to October is a particularly popular period. Wildlife often concentrates around reliable water sources as conditions become drier, while Zanzibar generally experiences favourable beach weather.
However, this does not mean July–October is the only time worth travelling.
January to March can be particularly rewarding for travellers interested in the Southern Serengeti/Ndutu calving season, greener landscapes and young animals. If the Great Migration is your priority during these months, we can adjust the standard Central Serengeti routing to include a more seasonally appropriate area.
June and November can also be attractive transitional months, particularly for travellers who are flexible about weather and migration positioning.
What About April and May?
April and May form part of Tanzania's wetter period. The landscape becomes particularly green, visitor numbers can be lower in some safari areas, and dramatic skies can create interesting photographic conditions.
However, heavier rainfall can affect road conditions and some outdoor activities. Zanzibar can also experience wetter weather during this period, so travellers whose main priority is uninterrupted beach time may prefer another season.
Does the Great Migration Determine the Best Time to Travel?
Not necessarily. The Serengeti has resident wildlife throughout the year, so a rewarding safari does not depend entirely on seeing migrating wildebeest.
If witnessing the Great Migration is a major priority, we can adjust your Serengeti accommodation according to your travel month—for example, considering Ndutu/Southern Serengeti during the early part of the year or Northern Serengeti during appropriate migration periods.
Great Migration movements are natural and influenced by rainfall, grazing conditions and other environmental factors. Exact herd locations, river crossings and individual wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Our Planning Advice
Choose your travel dates according to the experience that matters most to you rather than looking for one universally "perfect" month.
For classic dry-season wildlife viewing and beach time, consider July–October. For calving-season wildlife and greener scenery, consider January–March. For fewer visitors and lush landscapes, selected green-season periods can also be rewarding.
Once your travel dates are known, we can adjust the Serengeti location, accommodation and Zanzibar arrangements to better suit the season.

Safari Lodges & Tented Camps
The safari accommodation has been selected to work efficiently with the route while providing comfortable places to relax between game drives.
A particular advantage of this itinerary is the three consecutive nights in Central Serengeti. Rather than changing camps every night, you have one safari base for Nights 3, 4 and 5, giving you two full days for flexible Serengeti game drives and reducing unnecessary packing and transfers.
For migration-focused departures, the Serengeti accommodation may be adjusted according to your travel month. Depending on seasonal wildlife movements, we may recommend accommodation around Ndutu/Southern Serengeti or Northern Serengeti instead of keeping all three nights in Central Serengeti.
Four Nights in Nungwi, Zanzibar
After completing your Ngorongoro Crater safari and overnighting in Arusha, you fly from Arusha to Zanzibar on Day 8 and transfer to Nungwi on Zanzibar's northern coast.
The standard itinerary is based on The Z Hotel Zanzibar or a comparable Nungwi beach resort, subject to availability. You then remain at the same resort for four consecutive nights, giving you three full days to enjoy the beach or add optional Zanzibar experiences.
Alternative resorts in Nungwi, Kendwa or another suitable Zanzibar beach area can be arranged according to your budget, preferred accommodation style and availability.
For full details about beach time, airport transfers, Stone Town, spice tours, snorkelling, diving and other optional experiences, see the Zanzibar Beach Holiday – 4 Nights on the Indian Ocean section of this itinerary.
Accommodation Note: All hotels, lodges, camps and resorts are subject to availability at the time of booking. If a listed property is unavailable, we will propose a comparable alternative before confirmation. Your final quotation will clearly state the confirmed property, room category and meal plan.
Zanzibar Beach Holiday – 4 Nights on the Indian Ocean
After exploring Tarangire, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, the final part of this 12 Days Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar Beach Holiday slows the pace with four nights on Zanzibar. Instead of filling every day with scheduled excursions, this part of the itinerary combines free beach time with optional cultural and marine experiences that can be selected according to your interests.
On Day 8, you fly from Arusha to Zanzibar, where a private driver meets you at the airport and transfers you to your beach resort. The following days are deliberately flexible, allowing you to relax beside the Indian Ocean or add selected Zanzibar experiences without turning the beach portion into another tightly scheduled tour.
Where Will You Stay in Zanzibar?
Beach Area: Nungwi, on the northern coast of Zanzibar
Accommodation: A carefully selected beachfront resort in Nungwi, such as The Z Hotel Zanzibar, subject to availability
Stay: 4 nights
Meal Plan: Breakfast included, with half board or all-inclusive options available on request
Nungwi is one of the best areas for a classic Zanzibar beach holiday. Located on the northern tip of the island, it is known for its beautiful white-sand beaches, clear turquoise water and relatively favourable swimming conditions throughout much of the day. Compared with several beaches on the east coast, Nungwi is less affected by dramatic tidal changes, making it a convenient choice for travellers who want regular access to the sea.
The area also offers a good balance between relaxation and activities. You can spend your days swimming, sunbathing and enjoying the resort, while also having easy access to sunset dhow cruises, snorkelling, diving and other marine excursions. Nungwi is livelier than some of Zanzibar's more secluded beach areas, but it still offers plenty of peaceful beachfront accommodation.
Your confirmed resort, room category and meal plan will be stated clearly in the final safari quotation. If your preferred travel style is more private and secluded, an alternative resort in Kendwa or another suitable beach area can be arranged, subject to availability and budget.
Zanzibar Airport & Resort Transfers
On arrival at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, you will be met by your private transfer driver and taken to your resort in Nungwi.
The journey from Zanzibar Airport to Nungwi normally takes approximately 1.5–2 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. Your return airport transfer on Day 12 will be scheduled around your confirmed departure flight, allowing sufficient time for airport check-in.
Free Time at the Beach
A significant part of the Zanzibar stay is intentionally left unscheduled. After several days of early safari departures and game drives, you can spend time swimming, relaxing beside the pool, walking along the beach or simply enjoying the Indian Ocean at your own pace.
Nungwi is particularly suitable for travellers who want a beach area where swimming is generally possible at different times of the day. Sea conditions can still vary according to weather, tides and seasonal conditions, but the northern coast is often considered one of the most convenient parts of Zanzibar for a traditional beach holiday.
Optional Zanzibar Experiences
If you would like to explore beyond the resort, optional excursions can be arranged according to your interests, weather and availability.
Stone Town Tour: Explore the narrow streets, markets, historic buildings and cultural heritage of Zanzibar's best-known historic quarter.
Spice Farm Experience: Discover some of the tropical plants, fruits and spices traditionally grown on Zanzibar. This can also be combined with a Stone Town visit.
Snorkelling & Marine Excursions: Take a boat trip to explore the clear waters and coral reefs around the northern coast of Zanzibar, subject to sea conditions.
Scuba Diving: Diving can be arranged through local dive operators for suitable travellers, subject to certification requirements, weather and availability.
Traditional Dhow Sunset Cruise: Enjoy a traditional sailing experience along the coast while watching the sun set over the Indian Ocean.
Nungwi Turtle Conservation Visit: Visit a local conservation centre to learn about sea turtle protection and rehabilitation. This experience should be arranged responsibly and according to the centre's current visitor policy.

Zanzibar Excursions
Your Zanzibar stay can remain completely beach-focused or include cultural and marine activities. Pricing Note: Park fees, accommodation rates, domestic airfares and government charges can change. Your final quotation will show the exact price and confirmed inclusions for your travel dates before you make a booking.
Wildlife & Experiences by Destination
One advantage of this itinerary is the contrast between the three main safari areas. Rather than visiting several similar destinations, Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro each contribute a different landscape and style of wildlife viewing.
| Destination | Wildlife You May See | Key Experience |
|---|---|---|
| Tarangire National Park | Elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, impalas, lions and numerous bird species | Elephant viewing, baobab landscapes and the Tarangire River ecosystem |
| Serengeti National Park | Lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, wildebeest, zebras, gazelles and hippos | Extensive game drives, predator viewing and seasonal Great Migration movements |
| Ngorongoro Crater | Lions, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, gazelles, hyenas and occasionally black rhinos | Crater-floor game drive within a compact and distinctive ecosystem |
Tarangire – Elephants & Baobab Landscapes
Tarangire National Park provides a distinctive introduction to the safari. Its baobab-dotted landscapes and river system contrast strongly with the open plains encountered later in the Serengeti. Elephants are particularly associated with Tarangire, although the abundance and distribution of wildlife vary seasonally.
Serengeti – Big Cats, Plains Game & Migration
Three nights around the Serengeti portion of the itinerary provide time to explore different habitats rather than relying on a single game drive. Lions, cheetahs and leopards are among the predators visitors hope to encounter, alongside large populations of plains game.
The Serengeti also forms the core of the wider Great Migration ecosystem. Where the migrating herds are found depends on the time of year, rainfall and grazing conditions.
Ngorongoro – Crater Wildlife Experience
The Ngorongoro Crater provides another change of scenery. Descending from the crater rim to the floor brings you into an ecosystem of grassland, woodland and wetlands where a variety of wildlife can sometimes be observed within a relatively small area.
Black rhinos occur within the Ngorongoro ecosystem, but they are endangered and sightings should never be presented as guaranteed.
Wildlife Note: Tanzania's national parks are natural ecosystems rather than controlled wildlife attractions. Animal locations and sightings vary daily, and no particular species can be guaranteed.
Great Migration & Seasonal Safari Planning
The Great Migration is a year-round movement of wildebeest, zebras and other grazing animals through the wider Serengeti–Mara ecosystem. There is no single location where the herds remain throughout the year, so the best Serengeti area for this 12 Days Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar Beach Holiday can vary according to your travel month, rainfall and recent wildlife movements.
Our standard itinerary includes multiple nights in the Central Serengeti, which provides rewarding resident wildlife viewing throughout the year. For travellers whose main priority is the Great Migration, however, we can adjust the Serengeti portion of the itinerary to better match the season.
| Travel Period | Migration Planning | Safari Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| January–March | Southern Serengeti & Ndutu | Large herds are often associated with the southern plains during the calving period. For migration-focused trips, we may recommend adjusting some Serengeti nights toward Ndutu or the southern ecosystem. |
| April–June | Central & Western Serengeti | Herd movements generally progress away from the southern plains. Exact positioning varies with rainfall, grazing conditions and the timing of the migration. |
| July–October | Northern Serengeti | For travellers specifically interested in the migration during these months, northern Serengeti may be incorporated into the itinerary. River crossings can occur during this period but cannot be scheduled or guaranteed. |
| November–December | Central to Southern Serengeti | As seasonal conditions change, herds generally begin moving back toward the southern Serengeti ecosystem. The most suitable safari area depends on rainfall and actual herd locations. |
Can This 12-Day Safari Be Adjusted for the Great Migration?
Yes. Rather than using exactly the same Serengeti accommodation throughout the year, the safari can be customized according to your travel dates and wildlife priorities.
For example, a February departure may benefit from spending more time around the southern Serengeti/Ndutu ecosystem, while a migration-focused August departure may be better suited to including the northern Serengeti. Travellers who are more interested in overall wildlife viewing than following the migration can retain the standard Central Serengeti itinerary.
This seasonal flexibility allows us to design the safari around the time you are actually travelling rather than promising that migrating herds will be in one fixed location throughout the year.
Great Migration Note: Migration movements are natural and influenced by rainfall, grazing conditions and other environmental factors. Exact herd locations, river crossings and individual wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Zanzibar Beach Holiday Experience
After seven days exploring northern Tanzania, the final part of your journey replaces early morning game drives and dusty safari roads with the white-sand beaches and warm Indian Ocean waters of Zanzibar.
Four nights provide enough time to slow the pace of the holiday. You can spend entire days at your beach resort, swim when local tides and sea conditions allow, relax beside the pool or arrange optional activities according to your interests.
What Can You Do in Zanzibar?
Your Zanzibar stay can be as relaxed or active as you choose. Popular experiences include snorkelling, scuba diving, traditional dhow trips, Stone Town walking tours and spice farm visits. The most suitable marine activities depend on the season, weather, tides and the part of the island where you stay.
For travellers primarily interested in relaxation, there is no need to schedule an excursion every day. Keeping at least one or two days completely free creates a better balance after the safari.
Choosing the Right Zanzibar Beach
Different parts of Zanzibar offer different experiences. Some coastal areas experience significant tidal changes, while others may be more convenient for swimming at particular times of day. Resort atmosphere also varies considerably, from intimate boutique properties to larger all-inclusive Zanzibar beach resorts.
When confirming the itinerary, the beach and resort should therefore be selected according to whether your priorities are swimming, honeymoon privacy, family facilities, watersports, diving, nightlife or simply quiet beach time.
Combining Zanzibar with the Serengeti, Tarangire and Ngorongoro makes this 12-day itinerary particularly suitable for travellers who want both an active wildlife safari and several days to relax before flying home.
How Do You Travel From the Safari to Zanzibar?
This 12 Days Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar Beach Holiday does not fly directly from the Serengeti to Zanzibar. After your three-night stay in the Central Serengeti, you continue by road to the Ngorongoro area, explore Ngorongoro Crater on Day 7, and then return to Arusha for an overnight stay.
On Day 8, you transfer from your Arusha hotel to Arusha Airport for a scheduled domestic flight to Zanzibar. On arrival, a private driver meets you at Zanzibar Airport and transfers you to your beach resort in Nungwi for the four-night beach portion of the holiday.
Why Do We Return to Arusha Before Flying to Zanzibar?
The overnight stay in Arusha is intentional.
Rather than rushing your Ngorongoro Crater game drive to connect with a flight on the same day, the itinerary allows approximately 4–5 hours to explore the crater floor before continuing to Arusha.
You can then enjoy a more relaxed overnight stay before flying to Zanzibar the following day. This separates the final major safari experience from the beach transfer and provides a more comfortable transition between the two parts of your holiday.
Arusha to Zanzibar Flight
After breakfast on Day 8, you will be transferred from your Arusha hotel to Arusha Airport for your scheduled domestic flight to Zanzibar.
The flight normally takes approximately 1–1.5 hours, although the exact departure time, airline and routing depend on the schedule available for your travel date.
Your confirmed flight details will be provided with your final travel documents.
Is the Arusha to Zanzibar Flight Included?
Yes. The scheduled domestic flight from Arusha to Zanzibar is included in this package.
The package also includes the applicable airport transfers associated with this itinerary, including your transfer to Arusha Airport and your private transfer from Zanzibar Airport to the confirmed beach resort in Nungwi.
If you request a customised itinerary with a different flight routing, any change in flight or transfer cost will be shown in your revised quotation.
What Is the Baggage Allowance on the Zanzibar Flight?
Baggage allowances on Tanzania domestic flights vary according to the airline and aircraft operating the route. Your exact baggage allowance will therefore be confirmed once your Arusha–Zanzibar flight has been booked.
We recommend using soft-sided luggage rather than large rigid suitcases, particularly when your Tanzania itinerary includes domestic flights.
If you are travelling with additional luggage, let us know before arrival so that we can advise you according to the confirmed airline's baggage policy.
Zanzibar Airport to Nungwi Transfer
On arrival at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar, you will be met by your private transfer driver.
The drive to Nungwi on Zanzibar's northern coast normally takes approximately 1.5–2 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.
After checking into your beach resort, the remainder of Day 8 is intentionally left free for you to relax, enjoy the beach or unwind beside the pool after the safari portion of your holiday.
Can You Fly Directly From the Serengeti to Zanzibar?
Direct flights from Serengeti airstrips to Zanzibar may be available on alternative safari itineraries, depending on airline schedules and your travel dates.
However, a Serengeti-to-Zanzibar flight is not part of the standard routing of this 12-day package. This itinerary includes Ngorongoro Crater after the Serengeti, followed by an overnight stay in Arusha and the Arusha-to-Zanzibar flight on Day 8.
If you prefer to fly directly from the Serengeti to Zanzibar and adjust or remove other parts of the itinerary, we can redesign the route and provide a revised quotation.
Who Is This 12-Day Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar Tour Best For?
This 12 Days Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar Beach Holiday is designed for travellers who want to combine Tanzania's classic wildlife experiences with several days beside the Indian Ocean. With a private safari, three nights in the Serengeti and four nights in Zanzibar, the itinerary balances wildlife viewing with time to slow down at the end of the journey.
| Traveller | Why This Safari Works |
|---|---|
| First-Time Visitors to Tanzania | Combines Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater with Zanzibar, providing a varied introduction to both Tanzania's wildlife and coast. |
| Couples | A private 4×4 safari provides flexibility and privacy, followed by four nights to relax together at a Zanzibar beach resort. |
| Honeymooners | Combines wildlife, private safari travel and an Indian Ocean beach finish, with opportunities to upgrade camps, rooms and romantic experiences. |
| Families | Offers varied wildlife experiences followed by slower beach days. Private transport also provides greater flexibility for families than a shared safari itinerary. |
| Wildlife Lovers | Three nights in the Serengeti provide more meaningful wildlife-viewing time, complemented by Tarangire and Ngorongoro Crater. |
| Photographers | Multiple Serengeti game drives provide more opportunities to work with changing light, landscapes and wildlife activity rather than rushing through the park. |
Is This Safari Right for You?
This itinerary is particularly suitable if you want both safari and beach time within one Tanzania holiday without trying to visit too many national parks in 12 days.
It may also suit you if you prefer a private and customisable safari rather than a fixed group departure. The accommodation level, Serengeti location, Zanzibar resort and number of beach nights can be adjusted according to your travel dates, budget and interests.
If your main priority is the Great Migration, we can review the Serengeti portion according to the season and consider alternative locations such as Ndutu/Southern Serengeti or Northern Serengeti where appropriate. Migration movements and specific wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Packing & Planning for Your Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar Holiday
Packing for a Tanzania safari and Zanzibar beach holiday requires a little more planning than a safari-only trip because you will experience game drives, cooler mornings, warm afternoons and tropical coastal conditions during the same journey. Pack light, practical clothing that can be layered and used in different environments.
What to Pack
- Lightweight neutral safari clothing – Comfortable shirts, trousers and shorts in beige, khaki, brown or other neutral colours work well during game drives.
- Warm layer for early mornings – Serengeti and Ngorongoro mornings can feel cool, particularly when starting game drives early. Pack a fleece, light jacket or warm sweater.
- Comfortable closed shoes – Lightweight walking shoes or trainers are sufficient for most safari activities, with sandals or flip-flops useful in Zanzibar.
- Sun protection – Bring a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen for both safari days and Zanzibar.
- Binoculars – A personal pair of binoculars is particularly useful for viewing distant wildlife and birds without having to share.
- Camera and spare batteries – Bring additional batteries, memory cards and suitable charging equipment. A zoom lens is useful for wildlife photography.
- Swimwear and lightweight beachwear – Zanzibar is tropical, so include comfortable clothing for the beach and resort.
- Modest clothing for cultural visits – When visiting Stone Town, villages and other local communities, clothing that covers shoulders and knees is respectful and practical.
- Small day bag – Useful for carrying your camera, sunscreen, documents, water bottle and personal essentials during game drives and excursions.
- Personal medication and basic toiletries – Carry essential medication in your hand luggage and bring enough for the entire journey.
- Travel documents – Keep your passport, visa documentation, travel insurance information, flight details and safari confirmation readily accessible.
- Soft-sided luggage – Soft bags are generally easier to handle in safari vehicles and are particularly important when domestic flights have baggage restrictions.
Planning Tip: Domestic airline baggage allowances can vary by carrier and aircraft. Confirm the allowance shown on your final ticket before packing rather than relying on a general safari baggage limit.
Guide & Tanzania Safari Expert Insights
Planning a successful Tanzania safari and Zanzibar holiday is not simply about fitting as many destinations as possible into 12 days. The route needs to balance wildlife viewing, realistic driving times, seasonal conditions and enough time to enjoy each destination without turning the holiday into a series of transfers.
This itinerary has been structured around that principle, with three nights in the Serengeti, a dedicated Ngorongoro Crater safari and four nights in Zanzibar rather than adding extra parks simply to make the route appear longer.
Expert Planning Tip: Give the Serengeti Enough Time
For a 12-day safari and beach holiday, we generally prefer spending more time in the Serengeti rather than adding another national park simply to increase the number of destinations.
Three consecutive nights in the Serengeti provide two full days for game drives and give your guide greater flexibility to respond to wildlife activity, road conditions and seasonal movements.
A shorter Serengeti stay may look attractive on paper, but additional transfers can reduce the amount of useful wildlife-viewing time available during the safari.
Expert Planning Tip: Match the Serengeti Area to the Season
The Central Serengeti is an excellent year-round wildlife area, but travellers specifically interested in the Great Migration should not assume that the migrating herds will always be close to a fixed Central Serengeti camp.
Depending on your travel month and current conditions, we may recommend adjusting the safari toward Ndutu/Southern Serengeti or Northern Serengeti rather than keeping exactly the same accommodation throughout the year.
Great Migration movements are influenced by rainfall and grazing conditions, so exact herd locations and river crossings cannot be guaranteed.
Expert Planning Tip: Don't Rush the Safari-to-Zanzibar Transition
We have deliberately kept the Ngorongoro Crater and Zanzibar flight on separate days.
After exploring the crater on Day 7, the itinerary returns to Arusha for an overnight stay. You then fly from Arusha to Zanzibar on Day 8.
This avoids trying to combine a meaningful Ngorongoro Crater game drive, the road journey back toward Arusha and a domestic flight connection on the same day. It also creates a more comfortable transition from the active safari portion of the journey to four nights of relaxation in Zanzibar.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar
1. How much does a 12-day Tanzania safari and Zanzibar holiday cost?
Our 12 Days Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar Beach Holiday starts from USD 2,950 per person sharing, based on 6 travellers sharing a private safari vehicle.
The price per person varies according to group size, travel dates, accommodation availability and season. Based on the current package pricing, 2 travellers pay USD 3,795 per person, 3 travellers USD 3,395, 4 travellers USD 3,195, 5 travellers USD 3,050 and 6 travellers USD 2,950 per person.
Peak-season, festive-season and migration-focused accommodation supplements may apply. Your final quotation will confirm the exact accommodation, flights, transfers and inclusions before booking.
2. Is 12 days enough for Tanzania and Zanzibar?
Yes. Twelve days provides a good balance between wildlife viewing and beach time without trying to include too many destinations.
This itinerary includes Tarangire National Park, three nights in the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and four nights in Zanzibar. The multiple Serengeti nights are particularly useful because they provide two full safari days rather than using most of your time moving between parks.
The four-night Zanzibar stay then gives you time to relax after the safari while still allowing optional cultural or marine excursions.
3. How many days should I spend on safari and in Zanzibar?
This itinerary spends the first 7 days on the mainland safari portion, followed by a flight to Zanzibar on Day 8 and 4 nights in Zanzibar before departure on Day 12.
This works well for travellers whose main priority is wildlife but who also want meaningful beach time at the end of the trip.
If you prefer a longer beach holiday, extra Zanzibar nights can be added. Likewise, travellers who want a more extensive safari can add destinations or additional Serengeti nights.
4. What is the best time for a Tanzania safari and Zanzibar holiday?
The trip can operate throughout the year, but conditions vary by season.
July to October is popular for generally drier safari conditions and Zanzibar beach time. January to March can be particularly interesting for travellers interested in the Southern Serengeti/Ndutu calving season, although the standard Serengeti routing may need to be adjusted.
April and May are generally wetter, while June is a transition toward drier conditions. November can bring short-rain variability, and December combines greener safari conditions with a busy festive travel period.
There is no single best month for every traveller, so we recommend choosing dates according to your wildlife, weather and beach priorities.
5. Can I see the Great Migration on this 12-day safari?
Potentially, but the itinerary should be matched to your travel dates if the Great Migration is a major priority.
The standard itinerary includes multiple nights in the Central Serengeti, which offers year-round resident wildlife viewing. However, migration-focused departures may be adjusted toward Ndutu/Southern Serengeti during the early part of the year or Northern Serengeti during appropriate migration periods.
Great Migration movements depend on rainfall, grazing conditions and natural herd behaviour. Exact herd locations, river crossings and individual wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.
6. How do I travel from the Serengeti to Zanzibar?
On this particular itinerary, you do not fly directly from the Serengeti to Zanzibar.
After your three-night stay in the Central Serengeti, you travel by road to the Ngorongoro area. The following day includes a Ngorongoro Crater game drive before continuing to Arusha for an overnight stay.
On Day 8, you transfer to Arusha Airport for your scheduled domestic flight to Zanzibar. After landing in Zanzibar, a private driver meets you at the airport and transfers you to your beach resort in Nungwi.
Direct flights from Serengeti airstrips to Zanzibar may be available on alternative customised itineraries, but they are not part of the standard routing described on this page.
7. Is the flight to Zanzibar included?
Yes. The scheduled domestic flight from Arusha to Zanzibar is included in this package, together with the private transfer from your Arusha hotel to the airport and your Zanzibar airport transfer to the confirmed beach resort.
Your exact airline, departure time and baggage allowance will be confirmed with your final travel documents.
If the itinerary is customised and the flight routing changes, any resulting price difference will be shown in your revised quotation.
8. What luggage can I take on Tanzania domestic flights?
Baggage allowances on Tanzania domestic flights vary according to the airline and aircraft operating your route. We will therefore confirm the applicable baggage allowance when your Arusha–Zanzibar flight is booked.
We recommend travelling with soft-sided luggage rather than large rigid suitcases, particularly when a safari itinerary involves smaller aircraft.
If you are arriving in Tanzania with more luggage than the domestic flight permits, let us know before travel so that we can advise you on the available arrangements.
9. Is this Tanzania safari and Zanzibar package suitable for families?
Yes. The itinerary can work well for families because it combines wildlife experiences with several slower days at the beach.
The private 4×4 safari Land Cruiser also gives families more flexibility than a shared safari vehicle. Game-drive departure times, comfort stops and some daily arrangements can be adapted to the group where operationally possible.
For families travelling with younger children, we can recommend suitable lodges, family rooms and Zanzibar resorts according to the children's ages and your preferred accommodation level.
10. Can the itinerary be customised for a honeymoon?
Yes. This Tanzania safari and Zanzibar itinerary is private and customisable, making it suitable for honeymooners and couples celebrating a special occasion.
Depending on your budget and travel dates, the safari can be upgraded with more intimate tented camps, luxury lodges, private dining experiences or additional nights in the Serengeti. In Zanzibar, we can recommend beachfront rooms, boutique resorts, honeymoon suites or more secluded properties in Nungwi, Kendwa or another suitable beach area.
Optional experiences such as a Serengeti balloon safari, Stone Town tour, spice farm visit, snorkelling, diving or a sunset dhow cruise can also be added according to your interests and availability.
