A five-day Northern Tanzania safari works best when the itinerary remains focused. Rather than trying to include every park in the Northern Circuit, we recommend concentrating on Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro so that valuable game-viewing time is not lost to unnecessary transfers.

Why We Start With Tarangire

Starting with Tarangire National Park creates a natural route from Arusha toward Karatu and the Ngorongoro–Serengeti ecosystem. It also gives travellers a contrasting first safari experience, with baobab landscapes, the Tarangire River and particularly strong elephant viewing.

After Tarangire, staying in Karatu positions the safari conveniently for the journey through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area toward the Serengeti the following day.

Why We Protect Two Serengeti Nights

The Serengeti is the wildlife-viewing priority of this five-day itinerary. We therefore allocate two consecutive nights in the Serengeti, allowing Day 3 to be used for a full game drive rather than changing accommodation or travelling to another park.

On a short itinerary, adding destinations such as Lake Manyara may look attractive on paper, but it also creates additional transfers. We prefer to protect meaningful Serengeti game-viewing time rather than simply increase the number of parks listed in the itinerary.

Why Serengeti Camp Location Can Change With the Season

Serengeti Kati Kati Tented Camp in Central Serengeti is our standard camp for this itinerary because Central Serengeti offers rewarding resident wildlife throughout the year.

However, travellers whose main objective is the Great Migration may benefit from a different location. Depending on the travel month and current conditions, we may recommend accommodation around Ndutu/Southern Serengeti or Northern Serengeti instead.

The migration is influenced by rainfall and grazing conditions, so we do not guarantee exact herd locations or river crossings. Camp recommendations should be based on travel dates, wildlife priorities and current conditions rather than a fixed migration calendar.

When We Recommend Seven Days Instead of Five

Five days works well for travellers with limited time who want to combine Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro. However, we generally recommend a 6–7 day Northern Tanzania safari when the traveller's priorities include wildlife photography, more extensive Serengeti game drives, a slower safari pace or greater flexibility for seasonal Great Migration planning.

The additional days allow more time to explore the Serengeti without rushing the rest of the Northern Circuit.

Yes. Five days is enough to combine Tarangire National Park, Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater when the route is carefully planned. This itinerary is best suited to travellers who want to experience Tanzania's classic Northern Circuit within a relatively short period. The pace is active rather than leisurely, so travellers wanting more Serengeti time, photography opportunities or a slower itinerary should consider a 6–7 day safari.

2. What can I see on a 5-day Tanzania Northern Circuit safari?

The route covers three contrasting wildlife areas. Tarangire is particularly known for elephants and baobab landscapes, while the Serengeti offers opportunities to see lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest and other plains wildlife. Ngorongoro Crater supports a high concentration of wildlife, including buffalo, lions, hippos, hyenas and the endangered black rhino. Wildlife sightings are always natural and cannot be guaranteed.

6. Can I see the Great Migration on this safari?

Possibly, depending on your travel month, camp location and the natural movement of the herds. The Great Migration moves through different parts of the wider Serengeti ecosystem during the year, so we can adjust the Serengeti portion of the itinerary where practical according to seasonal conditions. Migration movements, river crossings and individual wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.

7. What is the best time for Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro?

The Northern Circuit can be visited throughout the year, but conditions vary by season. The drier months generally provide productive wildlife viewing, while the greener months bring lush scenery, birdlife and seasonal wildlife activity. Travellers interested specifically in the Great Migration should choose their Serengeti area according to the expected seasonal movement of the herds rather than relying on one fixed camp location throughout the year.
