Camp Location Matters in the Masai Mara

We do not recommend choosing a Masai Mara camp solely because it has a higher star rating or lower room price.

The location of the camp influences airstrip transfers, daily game-drive routes and access to different wildlife areas. During seasonal migration periods, location becomes even more important because wildebeest and zebra herds are continuously moving through the wider ecosystem.

For this reason, we recommend considering your travel month, safari priorities and camp location together.

Do Not Plan Around a Guaranteed River Crossing

Travellers visiting during migration months sometimes assume that booking a July, August or September safari guarantees a Mara River crossing. It does not.

Wildebeest movements respond primarily to rainfall, fresh grazing and water availability. Even when large herds are close to a river, nobody can reliably predict exactly when they will cross.

We therefore design migration-period safaris around the broader wildlife experience rather than promising one particular event.

When Should You Add an Extra Masai Mara Night?

Six days works well for most travellers combining Ol Pejeta and the Masai Mara. However, we recommend considering an additional Mara night if wildlife photography, predator observation or migration viewing is your main reason for travelling.

An extra day provides greater flexibility if wildlife is concentrated farther from your camp or weather and animal movements change the original game-drive plan.

Lightweight shirts, trousers or safari clothing in neutral colours work well for game drives. Bring layers because early mornings can be considerably cooler than daytime temperatures, particularly around the Laikipia highlands and Ol Pejeta.

5. Can I see the northern white rhinos at Ol Pejeta?

Ol Pejeta Conservancy is home to Najin and Fatu, the world's last two northern white rhinos. The safari can include a conservation-focused visit where travellers learn about efforts to protect the remaining animals and the scientific work associated with the subspecies. The exact programme is subject to current conservancy arrangements and should be confirmed as part of your itinerary.

6. What wildlife can I see on this safari?

Ol Pejeta and the Masai Mara support a wide variety of wildlife. July–October generally provides the strongest opportunity for seasonal Great Migration activity in the Masai Mara, although migration timing varies each year according to rainfall, grazing and water availability.

8. Can I see the Great Migration on this safari?

Potentially, if you travel during the appropriate season. Large wildebeest and zebra herds are generally associated with the Masai Mara during parts of July through October, but their arrival, location and departure vary annually. The Great Migration is a natural wildlife movement and fixed dates cannot be guaranteed. Mara River crossings are particularly unpredictable and should never be presented as guaranteed events.

9. Can I add a hot-air balloon safari in the Masai Mara?

Yes. An optional Masai Mara hot-air balloon safari can be added to the itinerary, subject to availability and weather conditions. Balloon safaris normally operate early in the morning and are followed by breakfast before guests continue with their safari programme.
