Why Choose This Tanzania Safari?
This 6 Days Tanzania Wildlife Safari is designed for travellers who want to experience three of northern Tanzania’s major wildlife destinations while still having enough time for meaningful game viewing. Rather than trying to cover too many parks in a short period, the itinerary focuses on Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro, creating a practical route with varied landscapes and wildlife experiences.
A major advantage is the time allocated to the Serengeti National Park. With two full days dedicated to exploring the Serengeti, you have more opportunities to search for lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants and the large herds that inhabit its plains. Depending on your travel dates, your driver-guide can also focus on areas offering opportunities to encounter the Great Wildebeest Migration.
The safari also provides contrasting experiences in Tarangire National Park, with its elephants and baobab-dotted landscapes, and the Ngorongoro Crater, where diverse wildlife can often be seen within a relatively compact area.
Throughout the journey, you travel in a private 4×4 safari Land Cruiser with a professional driver-guide. Private transportation provides greater flexibility during game drives and makes this itinerary particularly suitable for couples, families, friends and photographers seeking a personalised Tanzania safari experience.
Detailed 6-Day Tanzania Safari Itinerary
This 6 Days Tanzania Safari itinerary explores three of northern Tanzania’s outstanding wildlife destinations: Tarangire National Park, Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater. Travelling in a private 4×4 safari Land Cruiser with a professional driver-guide, you will experience changing landscapes, extensive game drives and some of Tanzania’s best-known wildlife areas.
Day 1: Arusha – Tarangire National Park
Your 6 Days Tanzania Wildlife Safari begins in Arusha, where your driver-guide will meet you for a short safari briefing before departing for Tarangire National Park. The drive normally takes approximately 2–2.5 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.
After entering the park, begin your first game drive through a landscape characterised by open savannah, seasonal wetlands and enormous baobab trees. Tarangire is particularly well known for its elephants, and large family groups can often be seen moving between feeding areas and the Tarangire River. The park also supports giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, impalas, warthogs and a variety of predators.
Enjoy lunch during the day before continuing your afternoon game drive. Later, leave the park or proceed to your selected accommodation for dinner and overnight.
Driving Time: Approximately 2–2.5 hours from Arusha
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Tarangire / Karatu area
Day 2: Tarangire – Serengeti National Park
After breakfast, depart the Tarangire area and continue towards the legendary Serengeti National Park. The journey takes you through northern Tanzania’s changing landscapes, with views of the highlands as you travel towards the vast Serengeti ecosystem.
Depending on the location of your accommodation and road conditions, the journey can take approximately 5–7 hours including stops and wildlife viewing along the way. After entering the Serengeti, the transfer gradually becomes a game drive as you search for wildlife across the open plains.
The Serengeti supports an exceptional diversity of animals, including lions, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, cheetahs, leopards, zebras and large numbers of antelopes. During migration periods, wildebeest and zebra herds may also be encountered depending on their seasonal location.
Continue to your tented camp or lodge in the Serengeti for dinner and overnight.
Driving Time: Approximately 5–7 hours, depending on route and stops
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Central Serengeti
Day 3: Full-Day Serengeti Safari
Wake up in the heart of the Serengeti National Park and prepare for a full day devoted to wildlife viewing. After breakfast, set out with your driver-guide to explore the plains, river valleys and rocky kopjes that provide habitat for an extraordinary variety of wildlife.
The Serengeti is one of Africa’s renowned predator-viewing destinations. Lions are frequently encountered, while cheetahs may be seen scanning the plains from elevated positions. Leopards are more elusive but can sometimes be spotted resting in trees or around riverine woodland. Elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, hippos and numerous antelope species add to the diversity.
Your game-drive route will depend on current wildlife movements and local conditions. During appropriate seasons, your guide may also search for concentrations of wildebeest and zebra associated with the Great Migration.
Enjoy a picnic lunch in the park or return to camp, depending on the day’s game-drive plan, before continuing your safari into the afternoon.
Game Drive: Full day
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Central Serengeti
Day 4: Full-Day Serengeti Safari
Enjoy a second full day in the Serengeti, giving you additional time to explore areas that could not be covered during the previous day. Having two complete days here is one of the key advantages of this six-day itinerary, as wildlife sightings and animal movements can vary considerably from one day to another.
An early start can provide excellent opportunities to observe wildlife while temperatures are cooler and predators may still be active. Your driver-guide will choose the day's route according to recent sightings, seasonal conditions and your interests.
You may encounter prides of lions resting around rocky kopjes, elephants moving through woodland, cheetahs hunting on open plains or hippos gathering in pools. Birdlife is equally diverse, with eagles, vultures, storks and many smaller species found throughout the ecosystem.
After an extensive day of game viewing, return to your Serengeti accommodation for dinner and your final night in the park.
Game Drive: Full day
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Central Serengeti
Day 5: Serengeti – Ngorongoro Conservation Area
After breakfast, enjoy a final Serengeti game drive as you begin travelling towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Leaving the Serengeti does not mean the wildlife experience is over, as the journey provides further opportunities to encounter animals across the plains and surrounding habitats.
Depending on the route and wildlife sightings, the drive towards Ngorongoro generally takes approximately 3–5 hours. Your guide can make strategic stops along the way when interesting wildlife is encountered.
As you approach the Ngorongoro highlands, the scenery changes from the open Serengeti plains to elevated grasslands and volcanic landscapes. On arrival near the crater rim or Karatu area, settle into your accommodation and enjoy the cooler highland surroundings.
Rest during the evening and prepare for an early start the following morning, when you will descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for the final major game drive of your Tanzania safari.
Driving Time: Approximately 3–5 hours, depending on route and game viewing
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Ngorongoro / Karatu area
Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater – Arusha
After an early breakfast, travel to the Ngorongoro Crater and descend approximately 600 metres to the crater floor for your final game drive. The crater’s grasslands, wetlands, woodland and permanent water sources support a remarkable concentration of wildlife within a relatively compact area.
During the game drive, look for lions, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas and elephants. The Ngorongoro Crater is also one of the places in northern Tanzania where there is a possibility of seeing the endangered black rhino, although sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Enjoy a picnic lunch at a designated site before continuing your game drive and later ascending from the crater.
Afterwards, begin the drive back to Arusha, normally taking approximately 3–4 hours from the Ngorongoro/Karatu area. Upon arrival, you will be dropped off at your hotel or another agreed location, marking the end of your 6 Days Tanzania Wildlife Safari.
Driving Time: Approximately 3–4 hours to Arusha after the crater visit
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
End Point: Arusha

Where a listed property is unavailable, a comparable alternative in a similar location and category may be offered. The confirmed accommodation will always be stated in your final safari quotation before booking.

Optional Safari Experiences
Your Tanzania safari can be personalised with additional experiences before, during or after the main itinerary.
Serengeti Hot-Air Balloon Safari
Experience the Serengeti from the air on an early-morning hot-air balloon safari. Flights normally take place around sunrise, offering a different perspective of the plains and wildlife below. The experience typically concludes with a bush breakfast before you rejoin your driver-guide and continue your scheduled game drive.
Maasai Cultural Experience
Add a visit to a local Maasai community to learn about traditional lifestyles, family structures, livestock, customs and cultural practices. The exact experience and community visited will depend on your safari route and arrangements.
Olduvai Gorge Visit
When travelling between the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, an optional stop can be arranged at Olduvai Gorge, an important archaeological area associated with research into early human history. This works particularly well with the Day 5 transfer, subject to timing.
Luxury Safari Accommodation Upgrade
Upgrade selected nights to higher-end safari lodges or luxury tented camps in Tarangire, Serengeti or Ngorongoro. This option is ideal for honeymooners, couples celebrating a special occasion or travellers seeking additional comfort.
Zanzibar Beach Extension
After returning to Arusha, continue your Tanzania holiday with a flight to Zanzibar for a beach stay. A Zanzibar extension can include Stone Town, Nungwi, Kendwa or another coastal area depending on your preferred style of holiday.
Additional Safari Nights
Extra nights can be added in the Serengeti, Ngorongoro or Tarangire for travellers who prefer a slower-paced itinerary or want additional wildlife-viewing and photography time.
Optional experiences should be requested in advance so availability, logistics and any additional costs can be confirmed before your safari.
Wildlife You May See
A safari through Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro offers opportunities to encounter an impressive variety of East African wildlife.
Big Cats & Predators
The Serengeti National Park is particularly renowned for predators. Lions are commonly encountered across the plains, while cheetahs favour open areas where they can use their speed to hunt. Leopards are more elusive and are often associated with trees and riverine woodland. Spotted hyenas, jackals and other smaller predators may also be seen.
Elephants & Large Mammals
Tarangire National Park is especially famous for elephants, including large family herds gathering around water sources during the dry season. You may also encounter buffaloes, giraffes, hippos and warthogs throughout the safari.
Wildebeest, Zebras & Antelopes
The Serengeti supports large populations of wildebeest, zebras, gazelles and other plains game. Depending on the season and location of the herds, your safari may coincide with part of the Great Wildebeest Migration.
Wildlife of the Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Crater supports a high concentration of wildlife within its grasslands, woodland and wetlands. Lions, buffaloes, wildebeest, zebras, hippos and hyenas are frequently encountered. The crater also offers a possibility of seeing the endangered black rhino, although sightings are never guaranteed.
Birdlife is abundant throughout the northern Tanzania safari circuit, with opportunities to see raptors, storks, hornbills, ostriches, flamingos and many other species.
Wildlife is free-ranging and sightings vary according to season, weather and animal movements, which makes every Tanzania safari different.
Best Time for This Tanzania Safari
This 6 Days Tanzania Wildlife Safari can be enjoyed throughout the year, but the experience changes with Tanzania's seasons and the movement of wildlife across the Serengeti ecosystem.
| Period | Safari Experience |
|---|---|
| January – February | Excellent period for wildlife viewing, with the wider Serengeti ecosystem associated with the wildebeest calving season in the south. |
| March – May | Greener landscapes, fewer visitors and excellent photographic scenery, although heavier rains can occur. |
| June – October | Dry season with generally excellent wildlife viewing as animals increasingly concentrate around available water sources. |
| July – October | A popular period for the wider Great Migration, with herds typically moving through the western and northern Serengeti as the season progresses. |
| November – December | Short rains bring greener landscapes, and migrating herds generally begin moving back towards the southern Serengeti ecosystem. |
Best Time for General Wildlife Viewing
June through October is particularly popular for general wildlife viewing because conditions are typically drier and animals can be easier to locate around water sources.
Best Time for the Great Migration
There is no single month when the Great Wildebeest Migration occurs. It is a continuous movement through the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem, and the best location depends on your travel dates.
If seeing the migration is an important priority, the itinerary can be adjusted according to the expected seasonal location of the herds. Migration movements and river crossings are natural events and cannot be guaranteed.
Green Season Safaris
Travelling during the greener months can provide lush landscapes, dramatic skies, excellent birdlife and fewer safari vehicles in some areas. It can also be particularly rewarding for photography.
Driving Distances & Travel Times
Understanding the approximate driving times helps you plan your 6 Days Tanzania Safari and know how much time is spent travelling between wildlife areas.
| Route | Approximate Driving Time |
|---|---|
| Arusha → Tarangire National Park | 2–2.5 hours |
| Tarangire → Serengeti National Park | 5–7 hours |
| Central Serengeti game drives | Full-day safari |
| Central Serengeti game drives | Full-day safari |
| Serengeti → Ngorongoro / Karatu | 3–5 hours |
| Ngorongoro / Karatu → Arusha | 3–4 hours |
Driving times are approximate and may vary depending on road conditions, weather, the location of your accommodation, park entry procedures and wildlife stops.
One advantage of travelling by road is that transfers between safari destinations form part of the overall experience. Once inside the wildlife areas, your journey can include game viewing rather than simply travelling from one lodge to another.
The longest transfer is generally between Tarangire and the Serengeti, but the itinerary compensates for this by providing three nights in the Serengeti and two dedicated full days for game viewing.
Who Is This Tanzania Safari Best For?
This 6 Days Tanzania Wildlife Safari is particularly well suited to travellers who want to experience the highlights of northern Tanzania without trying to visit too many destinations within a limited timeframe.
First-Time Safari Travellers
Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro provide an excellent introduction to Tanzania. The combination offers varied landscapes, abundant wildlife and opportunities to search for many of Africa's iconic species.
Couples & Honeymooners
The itinerary works well for couples seeking a private safari experience. Luxury lodge and tented-camp upgrades can also be arranged for honeymoons, anniversaries and other special occasions.
Families
Families can benefit from travelling in their own private 4×4 safari Land Cruiser, providing greater flexibility with game-drive schedules, comfort stops and daily departure times. Family-friendly accommodation can be selected according to the children's ages and room requirements.
Wildlife Photographers
With three nights in the Serengeti and two full days dedicated to exploring the park, photographers have more time to observe animal behaviour and work with changing light conditions rather than rushing through the destination.
Friends & Small Private Groups
Friends travelling together can share one safari vehicle while maintaining a private itinerary. The programme can also be adjusted around the group's interests and preferred accommodation category.
Travellers Interested in the Great Migration
The itinerary can be adapted seasonally for travellers particularly interested in the Great Wildebeest Migration. Accommodation and game-drive areas can be selected according to the expected movement of the herds at the time of travel.
This safari is especially suitable if your priority is wildlife viewing, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, while still including Tarangire's elephants and distinctive baobab landscapes.
What to Pack for Your Tanzania Safari
Packing appropriately can make your Tanzania safari more comfortable, particularly because temperatures and conditions vary between Tarangire, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro highlands.
Essential Safari Clothing
Pack lightweight, comfortable clothing in neutral colours such as khaki, beige, brown or green. Long-sleeved shirts and lightweight trousers provide additional protection from the sun, dust and insects. A warm fleece, sweater or light jacket is recommended for early-morning game drives and the cooler Ngorongoro highlands.
Comfortable closed walking shoes or trainers are suitable for most safari activities, together with sandals or other casual footwear for relaxing at your lodge or camp.
Safari Essentials
We recommend bringing:
Sunglasses and a wide-brimmed sun hat
High-SPF sunscreen
Insect repellent
Personal toiletries and medications
Small daypack
Reusable water bottle
Binoculars for wildlife viewing
Camera, spare batteries and additional memory cards
Phone and camera chargers
Power bank
Travel documents and copies of important booking information
Camera & Photography Equipment
Wildlife photographers may want to bring a telephoto lens for animals at a distance and a wider lens for landscapes. A bean bag can also be useful for stabilising a camera while photographing wildlife from the safari vehicle.
Travel Documents
Before travelling, check that you have your passport, appropriate Tanzania entry documentation, travel insurance details, flight information and safari confirmation documents. Entry and health requirements can change, so travellers should verify the latest official requirements before departure.
Pack Light & Practically
Soft-sided luggage is generally easier to store in safari vehicles than large hard-shell suitcases. If your Tanzania holiday includes domestic bush flights, check the airline's current baggage allowance before packing because smaller aircraft may have stricter weight and luggage requirements.

The safari can be arranged with mid-range or luxury accommodation depending on your preferences and budget. We select lodges and tented camps according to location, availability and the requirements of your itinerary.

Tanzania Safari Expert Insights
A successful 6 Days Tanzania Wildlife Safari depends as much on how the route is planned as on the destinations themselves. Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro work particularly well together because each provides a different landscape and wildlife experience without requiring the itinerary to include too many parks.
Allow More Time in the Serengeti
One of the most important decisions in this itinerary is spending three nights in the Serengeti. A single afternoon or one full day can feel rushed in such a large ecosystem. Two full game-drive days provide greater flexibility to explore different areas and respond to wildlife movements.
Start Serengeti Game Drives Early
Wildlife activity can be particularly rewarding during the cooler morning hours. When practical, an early departure gives you more time in the field and opportunities to observe predators and other animals before temperatures rise.
Don't Plan the Great Migration by Month Alone
The Great Wildebeest Migration is a natural, continuous movement rather than an event occurring on fixed dates. When migration viewing is a priority, we consider your travel dates and expected herd location when recommending the most appropriate Serengeti area and accommodation.
Accommodation Location Matters
A lodge may look attractive online but still add considerable driving if it is poorly positioned for the day's game-drive area. We therefore consider location alongside comfort and price when planning accommodation.
Tarangire Deserves Its Place in the Itinerary
Tarangire is sometimes treated simply as a stop on the way to the Serengeti, but it provides a distinctly different safari environment. Its baobab landscapes and elephant populations create a valuable contrast to the open Serengeti plains.
Ngorongoro Works Well as the Finale
Placing the Ngorongoro Crater towards the end of the safari creates a logical progression from the Serengeti towards Arusha. An early crater descent also allows time for game viewing before continuing to Arusha later in the day.
Expert Tip: If wildlife photography is one of your main priorities, tell us before the safari. Your driver-guide can take this into account when positioning the vehicle and planning game-drive times, although wildlife movements and sightings always remain unpredictable.

About Your Tanzania Safari Expert
John Peter – East Africa Safari Specialist
This 6 Days Tanzania Wildlife Safari has been developed with input from John Peter and the East Africa Jungle safari team, drawing on practical experience planning wildlife itineraries across Tanzania and the wider East African region.
The focus is on creating realistic safari routes that take into account driving times, park locations, accommodation, seasonal wildlife movements and the amount of time travellers actually have available for game viewing.
For this itinerary, particular attention has been given to balancing Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro without adding unnecessary destinations. Three nights are allocated to the Serengeti so travellers have two dedicated full days for game drives rather than experiencing the park primarily through arrival and departure transfers.
John and the East Africa Jungle team assist travellers with private and customised safaris, accommodation selection, route planning and multi-destination journeys across East Africa.
The objective is straightforward: provide travellers with clear information, realistic logistics and a safari itinerary that can be adapted to their travel dates, interests and preferred accommodation level.
Editorial Review & Fact Checking
At East Africa Jungle, we aim to provide accurate, practical and useful information to help travellers plan their Tanzania safari with confidence.
This 6 Days Tanzania Wildlife Safari itinerary has been reviewed for route practicality, approximate driving times, destination information, accommodation planning and the sequence of game-viewing activities across Tarangire National Park, Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
How We Review Our Safari Content
Before publication and during subsequent updates, our safari content is checked against practical operating considerations, including:
Safari routes and realistic driving times
National park and conservation area information
Accommodation locations and itinerary suitability
Seasonal wildlife patterns
Great Migration movements and their seasonal nature
Safari vehicle and game-drive arrangements
Optional activities and extensions
General traveller logistics
Wildlife movements, road conditions, accommodation availability, park regulations, conservation fees and other travel requirements can change. For this reason, final arrangements are reconfirmed during the booking process.
