Having planned Kenya safari itineraries for more than 16 years, I find this northern circuit works particularly well when Samburu is visited first. Leaving Nairobi early allows travellers to move directly into the drier landscapes of northern Kenya, where the wildlife experience is immediately different from the country's southern parks. Samburu is especially rewarding for travellers interested in the Samburu Special Five, elephants, predators and photography.

I recommend keeping two nights in Meru National Park rather than treating it as a quick transit stop. Meru is more remote and generally quieter than Kenya's most visited safari areas, and the additional time gives you a full day for game drives without having to combine wildlife viewing with a long road transfer.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy makes a natural final stop because it breaks the journey back towards Nairobi while adding a different conservation-focused experience. It is particularly worthwhile for travellers interested in rhinos, the Big Five and the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary.

Travellers should also consider the road distances when choosing this itinerary. Nairobi to Samburu takes approximately 5–6 hours, while the transfers between Samburu, Meru, Ol Pejeta and Nairobi typically require several hours each. I therefore recommend this route for travellers who are comfortable with overland safari travel and prefer experiencing several contrasting wildlife areas rather than staying in one destination.

For wildlife viewing and generally favourable safari conditions, I particularly like January to March and June to October. Overall, this itinerary is best suited to couples, families, photographers, wildlife enthusiasts and repeat Kenya visitors looking for a quieter alternative to the classic Masai Mara and Amboseli circuit.
