Safari in brief: One day exploring Tarangire's elephant and baobab country followed by three nights in Serengeti National Park, including two full days of Serengeti game viewing.

Is 5 Days Enough for Tarangire & Serengeti?

Yes. Five days is enough for a Tarangire and Serengeti safari when the itinerary is focused on these two parks rather than trying to include too many destinations. The route gives you time to experience Tarangire’s distinctive wildlife and landscapes while keeping the Serengeti as the main focus of the safari.

Your first day is spent exploring Tarangire National Park, known for its elephants, baobab trees and varied habitats. The following days are dedicated primarily to the Serengeti, providing more time to search for big cats, plains wildlife and seasonal concentrations of wildebeest and zebras.

The advantage of this itinerary is its simplicity: two parks, fewer hotel changes and more time for game viewing. It is particularly suitable for travellers whose priority is experiencing the Serengeti rather than visiting as many parks as possible.

There are still some long road sections, particularly when travelling between Tarangire and the Serengeti and on the return journey to Arusha. Travellers who want an even slower pace, additional full-day Serengeti game drives or more flexibility to follow seasonal wildlife movements may prefer a 6- or 7-day Tanzania safari.

For travellers with five days available, however, this itinerary provides a practical balance between Tarangire’s contrasting landscapes and extended wildlife viewing in the Serengeti.

Why Choose This 5-Day Tarangire & Serengeti Safari?

1. More Time in the Serengeti

Instead of trying to cover several parks in five days, this itinerary focuses on Tarangire and the Serengeti, allowing more of your safari time to be dedicated to wildlife viewing in Tanzania’s best-known safari ecosystem.

2. Two Contrasting Safari Landscapes

Experience Tarangire’s baobab woodland, river valleys and elephant habitat before continuing to the expansive grasslands and wildlife-rich plains of the Serengeti.

3. Private 4×4 Safari Land Cruiser

Travel throughout in your own private 4×4 safari Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, providing flexibility for photography, wildlife stops and game-drive timing.

4. Private Professional Safari Guide

Your professional driver-guide accompanies you throughout the journey, using local knowledge, wildlife activity and road conditions to help determine the game-drive route each day.

5. Excellent Wildlife Variety

The combination of Tarangire and Serengeti provides opportunities to see elephants, lions, cheetahs, leopards, giraffes, buffaloes, wildebeest, zebras and numerous other species.

5 Days Tarangire & Serengeti Safari Highlights

  • Explore Tarangire National Park and its distinctive baobab-dotted landscapes.
  • Watch for large elephant herds around Tarangire's woodland, plains and river ecosystem.
  • Spend extended time in Serengeti National Park rather than treating it as a short overnight stop.
  • Search for Serengeti predators, including lions, cheetahs, leopards and spotted hyenas.
  • See classic plains wildlife such as wildebeest, zebras, giraffes, buffaloes and antelopes.
  • Experience the wider Great Migration ecosystem, with herd locations varying according to rainfall and seasonal movement.
  • Enjoy morning and afternoon wildlife photography from a private 4×4 safari Land Cruiser.
  • Travel with a professional private driver-guide, allowing game drives to respond to wildlife activity and conditions on the day.

Wildlife note: Wildlife is free-ranging, so individual species, Great Migration locations and specific sightings cannot be guaranteed.

5 Days Tarangire & Serengeti Safari Route & Driving Times

This safari starts and ends in Arusha and follows a focused Northern Tanzania route through Tarangire and Serengeti. Driving times are approximate and can vary according to your accommodation location, road conditions, park entry procedures, wildlife stops and traffic.

RouteApprox. Driving TimeSafari Experience
Arusha → Tarangire National Park2–2.5 hoursMorning transfer followed by Tarangire game viewing
Tarangire / Karatu → Serengeti4–6 hoursScenic journey toward Serengeti with game viewing after entering the park
Serengeti Game DrivesFlexibleMorning, afternoon or full-day game drives according to the itinerary
Serengeti → ArushaApprox. 7–9 hours by roadLong return journey; actual time depends heavily on camp location, route and road conditions

Is There a Lot of Driving on This Safari?

There is a significant amount of driving, particularly on the journey into the Serengeti and the final return to Arusha. However, much of the safari is designed around game viewing rather than simple point-to-point transfers.

The road journey also allows you to experience the changing landscapes between Tarangire, the northern Tanzania highlands and the Serengeti ecosystem.

Can We Fly Back From the Serengeti?

Yes. For travellers who want to reduce the long final road transfer, a Serengeti-to-Arusha flight can be added where schedules and availability permit.

A fly-out option can make the final day more comfortable and may allow additional time in the Serengeti before departure. The exact flight schedule, baggage allowance and additional cost should be confirmed for your travel dates.

Detailed 5-Day Tarangire & Serengeti Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arusha → Tarangire National Park

Your 5 days Tarangire and Serengeti safari begins in Arusha, where your professional driver-guide will meet you after breakfast for a safari briefing. Depart in your private 4×4 Land Cruiser and drive approximately 2–2.5 hours to Tarangire National Park.

After completing the park entry formalities, begin your first game drive through a landscape of ancient baobab trees, open savannah, woodland and the Tarangire River. The park is particularly famous for elephants, which may be encountered individually or in large family groups. Other wildlife can include giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, impalas and numerous bird species, with opportunities to search for lions and other predators.

Enjoy lunch during the safari and continue exploring in the afternoon. Later, leave the park and drive to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.

Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Safari Activity: Tarangire game drive
Driving Time: Approximately 2–2.5 hours from Arusha

Day 2: Tarangire / Karatu → Serengeti National Park

After an early breakfast, depart for the Serengeti National Park, travelling through the scenic highlands of northern Tanzania. The journey provides an opportunity to watch the landscape gradually change as you travel toward the vast Serengeti ecosystem.

After entering the Serengeti, your transfer becomes part of the day's game-viewing experience. Keep watch for giraffes, elephants, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes and different antelope species while your guide searches suitable habitats for predators such as lions, cheetahs and leopards.

The exact game-drive route will depend on your accommodation location, road conditions and wildlife activity on the day. This flexibility is one of the advantages of travelling on a private safari.

Continue through the Serengeti toward your tented camp, arriving later in the afternoon or early evening. Enjoy dinner and your first night surrounded by the sounds of the African wilderness.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Safari Activity: Transfer & Serengeti game drive
Overnight: Serengeti National Park

Day 3: Full-Day Serengeti National Park Safari

Today is dedicated entirely to exploring Serengeti National Park. After an early breakfast, depart with your private driver-guide for a full day of game viewing across one of Africa's most celebrated wildlife ecosystems.

Rather than following a fixed circuit, your guide can adjust the route according to recent wildlife activity and seasonal conditions. Search the plains and woodland for lions, cheetahs, leopards, spotted hyenas, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest and numerous antelope species.

Depending on your travel month and the natural movement of the herds, there may also be opportunities to encounter concentrations associated with the Great Migration. The location and timing of the migration depend largely on rainfall and grazing conditions and cannot be guaranteed.

Enjoy a picnic lunch in the park before continuing your afternoon game drive. Return to camp in the evening for dinner and overnight.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Safari Activity: Full-day Serengeti game drive
Overnight: Serengeti National Park

Day 4: Full-Day Serengeti Wildlife Safari

A second full day in the Serengeti is one of the main advantages of this five-day itinerary. Instead of moving immediately to another park, you have another day to explore areas that produced interesting sightings the previous day or search completely different habitats.

An early start can be particularly rewarding, with cooler temperatures and wildlife often active across the plains. Your guide may investigate kopjes, riverine woodland, open grassland or other productive areas according to recent sightings and seasonal wildlife movements.

Take time to observe animal behaviour rather than simply moving from one sighting to another. This additional day can also be valuable for photographers who want more opportunities to work with different light, landscapes and wildlife encounters.

Enjoy lunch during the game drive and continue exploring through the afternoon before returning to your Serengeti camp for your final safari dinner and overnight.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Safari Activity: Full-day Serengeti game drive
Overnight: Serengeti National Park

Day 5: Serengeti → Arusha

Wake early for your final morning in the Serengeti. Depending on the day's timing and your camp location, there may be an opportunity for some final wildlife viewing as you begin the journey out of the park.

The return to Arusha is the longest road section of this itinerary, but it also allows you to experience the changing landscapes of northern Tanzania once more. Stop for lunch along the way and continue toward Arusha, where arrival is expected later in the day.

Your guide will drop you at your Arusha hotel or another agreed location, marking the end of your 5 days Tarangire and Serengeti safari.

For travellers who prefer to avoid the long final road transfer, a scheduled Serengeti-to-Arusha flight can be added at an additional cost, subject to flight schedules and availability.

Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
Safari Activity: Final game viewing & return transfer
End Point: Arusha

Important Day 5 Travel Note

The Serengeti to Arusha road journey is approximately 7–9 hours, depending on your camp location, road conditions, wildlife stops and traffic. For this reason, Day 5 is primarily a return travel day, with only limited game viewing possible while leaving the Serengeti.

If you prefer to avoid the long drive, we can arrange a scheduled flight from the Serengeti to Arusha at an additional cost, subject to availability. The fly-out option is particularly useful if you have an onward flight or would simply prefer a more relaxed final day.

Planning tip: If you have an international or domestic flight on Day 5, please share your departure time with us before booking so we can recommend the safest road or fly-out arrangement.

Safari Accommodation

This safari uses comfortable mid-range lodges and tented camps, selected for convenient access to the planned game-viewing areas. The exact properties may vary according to travel dates, season and availability.

Three Nights in the Serengeti

The itinerary includes three nights in Serengeti National Park, with two full game-drive days between your arrival and departure. Staying within the Serengeti gives your driver-guide time to explore different wildlife areas and adapt daily game drives according to seasonal conditions and recent sightings.

Your camp location can also be selected according to your travel dates and accommodation availability, helping keep you well positioned for the planned game-viewing areas.

Accommodation Upgrades

The itinerary can also be arranged with budget, upgraded mid-range, luxury or high-end accommodation. During seasons when wildlife concentrations are better in another part of the Serengeti ecosystem, we can also recommend accommodation better positioned for your travel dates.

All accommodation remains subject to availability at the time of booking. Where a listed property is unavailable, a comparable alternative will be proposed before confirmation.

Best Time for a Tarangire & Serengeti Safari

A Tarangire and Serengeti safari can be enjoyed throughout the year, but the experience changes with rainfall, wildlife distribution, vegetation and the seasonal movement of the Great Migration.

The best time for your safari therefore depends on what you want to experience. The dry season is particularly rewarding for wildlife viewing in Tarangire, while different parts of the Serengeti become important at different times of year as the wildebeest herds move through the wider ecosystem.

PeriodSafari CharacterWhy Travel at This Time?
January–FebruaryGreen Season & CalvingLush landscapes and large wildebeest concentrations are often found around the southern Serengeti and Ndutu ecosystem. February is particularly associated with the calving period and increased predator activity.
MarchGreen SeasonGreen scenery, good resident wildlife viewing and generally fewer visitors than during the main dry-season months. Rainfall becomes increasingly possible as the month progresses.
April–MayLong Rains / Lower Visitor PeriodLush landscapes, fewer safari vehicles and seasonal migration movement through the Serengeti ecosystem. Some roads can become challenging and certain seasonal camps may close.
JuneEarly Dry SeasonConditions begin to dry, vegetation gradually becomes thinner and wildlife viewing around reliable water sources becomes increasingly productive. Migration herds may be moving through western or central areas depending on rainfall.
July–OctoberDry SeasonOne of the strongest periods for combining Tarangire and Serengeti. Tarangire wildlife increasingly concentrates around permanent water, while migration herds may be farther north in the Serengeti ecosystem. This is also a popular travel period.
NovemberShort RainsShort rains begin refreshing the landscape, visitor numbers may be lower than during peak dry season, and migration herds generally begin their southward movement.
DecemberGreen SeasonGreener landscapes return and wildebeest concentrations generally continue moving toward the southern Serengeti ecosystem. A rewarding period for scenery, wildlife and photography.

Best Time for Tarangire

For Tarangire National Park, the dry season from approximately June to October is particularly rewarding. As seasonal water sources diminish, elephants and other wildlife increasingly concentrate around the Tarangire River and other reliable water sources.

The greener months provide a different experience, with lush vegetation, strong birdlife and fewer visitors during some periods.

Best Time for Serengeti

The Serengeti offers rewarding resident wildlife viewing throughout the year, but the best area to visit changes according to the season.

If the Great Migration is a priority, your Serengeti camp should be selected according to your travel dates and expected seasonal herd movements. The wildebeest do not follow an exact calendar; rainfall, grazing and local conditions influence their location from year to year.

Our Planning Recommendation

For this 5-day Tarangire and Serengeti safari, choosing the right Serengeti region and camp location can be more important than simply choosing a particular month.

When practical, we recommend accommodation according to your travel dates and the wildlife areas you intend to explore. This can reduce unnecessary driving and provide more time for game viewing.

Migration note: Great Migration movements are natural and seasonal. Herd locations, calving activity and river crossings cannot be guaranteed for a particular date.

Serengeti Hot-Air Balloon Safari

A Serengeti balloon safari is one of the most popular additions to this itinerary. Flights generally take place around sunrise and provide a completely different perspective of the Serengeti landscape and wildlife below.

Balloon operations take place in different parts of the Serengeti according to season and operational schedules. We will therefore recommend the appropriate balloon option based on your travel month and camp location.

Fly From Serengeti to Arusha on Day 5

For travellers who would prefer to avoid the long road journey back to Arusha, we can arrange a scheduled flight from the Serengeti to Arusha, subject to availability.

This is particularly worth considering if you have an onward journey or simply want to maximise your final morning in the Serengeti.

Extend Your Safari to Zanzibar

After the safari, you can continue to Zanzibar for a beach extension. Depending on the final itinerary, we can arrange the connecting flight, airport transfers and beach accommodation as part of one Tanzania holiday.

Can You See the Great Migration on This 5-Day Safari?

Yes, it may be possible to experience the Serengeti Great Migration during this 5-day safari, but the itinerary needs to be planned around your travel dates and the seasonal movement of the herds.

If witnessing the migration is one of your main priorities, see our Great Migration Tanzania Safari for an itinerary designed more specifically around seasonal wildebeest movements.

The Great Migration is not a single event or a fixed route operating to an exact timetable. Wildebeest and zebras move through the wider Serengeti ecosystem in response to rainfall, fresh grazing and natural conditions. For this reason, we recommend choosing your Serengeti game-drive area and accommodation according to the season rather than using the same camp throughout the year.

Approx. PeriodMigration AreaTypical Seasonal Experience
December – MarchSouthern Serengeti / Ndutu ecosystemLarge wildebeest concentrations, with calving generally associated with the early-year period
April – MayCentral / western movementHerds begin moving through different parts of the Serengeti ecosystem
June – JulyWestern / northern movementHerds continue north; exact locations depend on rainfall
July – OctoberNorthern SerengetiLarge herd concentrations may occur, with possible river-crossing activity
November – DecemberMoving southHerds generally begin returning toward the southern ecosystem

What About the Mara River Crossings?

If seeing a Mara River crossing is a major priority, the itinerary should normally concentrate on the northern Serengeti during the appropriate seasonal period.

However, river crossings are unpredictable natural events. Even when large herds are near the river, they may wait for hours or days before crossing. No safari operator or guide can guarantee a river crossing on a specific day.

How We Plan This Safari Around the Migration

Because this itinerary gives you several days in the Serengeti, we can select an appropriate game-viewing area based on your travel month, accommodation availability and recent seasonal patterns.

The aim is not to chase a guaranteed migration sighting, but to position you intelligently within the Serengeti ecosystem while still enjoying its excellent resident wildlife.

Wildlife You Can See on This 5-Day Safari

Tarangire and Serengeti offer complementary wildlife experiences. Tarangire is particularly associated with elephants and its river ecosystem, while the Serengeti provides expansive predator-and-prey habitats and some of Tanzania's best-known plains wildlife.

Wildlife in Tarangire National Park

During your Tarangire game drive, look for:

  • African elephants, including family groups
  • Giraffes
  • Zebras
  • Wildebeest
  • African buffaloes
  • Impalas and other antelopes
  • Warthogs
  • Lions
  • Baboons and vervet monkeys
  • Numerous resident and migratory bird species

Tarangire's combination of woodland, open grassland and the Tarangire River creates particularly varied wildlife habitats.

Wildlife in Serengeti National Park

With several days dedicated to the Serengeti, possible sightings include:

  • Lions
  • Cheetahs
  • Leopards
  • Spotted hyenas
  • Wildebeest
  • Zebras
  • African elephants
  • Giraffes
  • African buffaloes
  • Hippos
  • Gazelles and other antelopes
  • Jackals
  • Warthogs
  • Numerous birds of prey and other bird species

Can You See the Big Five?

This itinerary offers opportunities to encounter several members of the Big Five, particularly lion, elephant, buffalo and potentially leopard.

However, this safari is designed around Tarangire and Serengeti rather than specifically around completing a Big Five checklist. Wildlife is free-ranging, and no individual species or sighting can be guaranteed.

For many travellers, the most rewarding experiences are not simply individual species but observing natural behaviour: elephants interacting as a family, lions resting after a hunt, cheetahs scanning the plains or thousands of wildebeest moving through the Serengeti ecosystem.

Tarangire vs Serengeti – What Will You Experience?

Although Tarangire and Serengeti are both part of Tanzania's Northern Safari Circuit, they provide very different landscapes and wildlife experiences. Combining them gives this five-day safari more variety without requiring you to rush between several parks.

Tarangire – Elephants, Baobabs & River Habitat

Tarangire National Park provides a striking opening to the safari. Its enormous baobab trees, woodland and river system create a landscape noticeably different from the Serengeti.

Elephants are one of the major attractions, particularly during the dry season when wildlife increasingly concentrates around reliable water sources.

Serengeti – Predators, Plains & the Migration Ecosystem

The Serengeti is the main focus of this itinerary. By spending three nights in the park, you have more time to search different habitats, revisit productive areas and observe wildlife behaviour without immediately moving to another destination.

The Serengeti is particularly rewarding for predator viewing and classic plains wildlife. Depending on the season, it may also provide access to concentrations associated with the Great Migration.

Why Combine Tarangire and Serengeti?

Tarangire and Serengeti complement each other particularly well. Tarangire adds baobab landscapes, river habitat and excellent elephant viewing, while the Serengeti brings vast plains, predator-rich habitats and the wider Great Migration ecosystem.

The result is a safari that provides noticeable changes in landscape, habitat and wildlife experience within a relatively short itinerary.

Who Is This 5-Day Tarangire & Serengeti Safari Best For?

This 5-day Tarangire and Serengeti safari is well suited to first-time safari travellers, couples, families, photographers, wildlife enthusiasts and small private groups looking for a comfortable private safari with excellent wildlife-viewing opportunities.

Traveller TypeWhy This Safari Works
First-Time Safari TravellersCombines two contrasting parks with elephants, big cats and classic African plains wildlife
CouplesPrivate vehicle, flexible game drives and comfortable tented-camp accommodation
FamiliesA private safari provides greater flexibility for stops, meals and daily game-drive timing
Wildlife EnthusiastsThree Serengeti nights provide more time to search for predators and observe wildlife behaviour
PhotographersPrivate vehicle allows greater flexibility when positioning for wildlife and landscape photography
Great Migration TravellersThe Serengeti portion can be adapted seasonally according to expected herd movements
Small Private GroupsVehicle costs can be shared while retaining a private safari experience
Travellers With Limited TimeCovers Tarangire and Serengeti within five days without adding unnecessary park changes

Who May Prefer a Longer Safari?

Consider a 6- or 7-day Tanzania safari if you want an even slower pace, additional Serengeti game drives or more time to explore another Northern Tanzania destination.

If you have additional time, a 6- or 7-day itinerary can add another Northern Tanzania destination or create a more relaxed overall safari pace.

Packing & Planning for Your 5-Day Tanzania Safari

You do not need to overpack for a five-day safari. Comfortable, practical clothing and a few wildlife-viewing essentials will make the journey considerably easier.

What to Pack

  1. Lightweight neutral-coloured clothing – Comfortable shirts and trousers in khaki, beige, brown or similar shades work well for game drives.
  2. Warm layer – Early mornings and evenings can feel cool, so carry a fleece, sweater or lightweight jacket.
  3. Comfortable closed shoes – Lightweight walking or travel shoes are sufficient for most lodge and safari activities.
  4. Sun protection – Pack a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen.
  5. Binoculars – Particularly useful for observing distant predators, birds and wildlife across the Serengeti plains.
  6. Camera and spare batteries – Bring sufficient memory cards, batteries and charging equipment if photography is important to you.
  7. Reusable day bag – Keep your camera, binoculars, sunscreen and personal essentials accessible inside the safari vehicle.
  8. Personal medication – Carry enough prescription medication for your entire trip, preferably in your hand luggage.
  9. Insect repellent – Useful during evenings and in areas where insects are more active.
  10. Travel documents – Keep your passport, visa documentation, travel insurance details and safari confirmation easily accessible.

Before You Travel

Check Tanzania's current passport, visa and health-entry requirements well before departure, as requirements can change.

We also recommend comprehensive travel and medical insurance covering the full duration of your Tanzania holiday.

Luggage Planning

If your safari includes a domestic bush flight, luggage restrictions can be significantly different from international airline allowances. Soft-sided bags are generally more practical for safari travel.

We will confirm the applicable baggage allowance when arranging any domestic flight as part of your itinerary.

Guide & Tanzania Safari Expert Insights

After years of planning and operating safaris across northern Tanzania, one of the most common mistakes we see with short itineraries is trying to include too many national parks in too few days.

For a five-day safari, we prefer to concentrate on Tarangire and Serengeti rather than treating every destination as a box that needs to be ticked.

Spend the Time Where Wildlife Viewing Matters

The Serengeti is enormous. Staying three nights gives your guide more flexibility than arriving one afternoon and leaving the following morning. Wildlife does not follow a timetable, and an additional day can make a significant difference when searching for predators or following interesting sightings.

Do Not Choose Your Serengeti Camp by Name Alone

Camp location is extremely important. A beautiful camp in the wrong area for your travel dates can mean unnecessary hours of driving.

When possible, we consider the season, expected wildlife distribution and planned game-drive area before recommending where to stay.

Start Game Drives Early

Early mornings can be particularly productive for wildlife viewing. Temperatures are cooler, light conditions are often excellent for photography, and predators may still be active.

Your private vehicle also gives you flexibility to discuss departure times with your guide rather than following the schedule of a larger group.

Treat the Great Migration as Wildlife, Not a Scheduled Event

The Great Migration is driven by natural conditions, particularly rainfall and grazing. Published migration calendars are useful planning guides, but they cannot tell us exactly where the herds will be on a particular date.

We therefore plan around the most appropriate Serengeti region for the season while ensuring the safari remains rewarding even if migration movements differ from expectations.

Consider Flying Back if Road Time Is a Concern

The final road journey from the Serengeti to Arusha is long. If your budget allows, a scheduled flight back to Arusha can reduce road time and make the final day more comfortable.

For travellers who enjoy overland journeys, however, returning by road remains possible and keeps the safari at a lower overall cost.

Our planning approach: A successful five-day safari is not about how many parks appear on the itinerary. It is about choosing the right areas, allowing enough game-viewing time and keeping the itinerary realistic.

★★★★★ “Three Nights in the Serengeti Made the Difference”

Daniel & Sophie Weber – Germany
Travel Month: July 2025
Group Type: Couple
Safari Route: Tarangire → Serengeti
Safari Highlights: Elephants, lions, cheetahs, Serengeti game drives

“We really liked the balance of the safari. Tarangire was a wonderful start, especially seeing the elephants among the baobab trees, but the Serengeti was the highlight for us. Having several days there meant we never felt rushed. Our guide was patient and gave us plenty of time at each sighting. We saw lions, cheetahs, giraffes and huge groups of zebras. The long drives were explained clearly before we booked, so we knew what to expect.”

Safari Highlights: Elephant herds, big cats, private vehicle, photography

“This was our first safari and five days worked very well for us. Tarangire was beautiful and we saw far more elephants than we expected. In the Serengeti, our guide took time to look for wildlife rather than rushing from place to place. One morning we spent a long time watching a lion pride before continuing across the plains. Having a private vehicle also gave us plenty of space for our cameras and binoculars.”

★★★★★ “The Serengeti Was Everything We Hoped For”

Safari Route: Tarangire → Serengeti
Safari Highlights: Wildebeest, predators, Serengeti plains, private guide

“The Serengeti was the main reason we travelled to Tanzania, so we were happy we chose an itinerary that gave us more time there. We saw wildebeest, zebras, elephants, hyenas and several lions, and our guide was excellent at explaining the animals and their behaviour. Tarangire was also a great contrast with its baobab trees and elephants. Five days went quickly, but the itinerary never felt like we were simply ticking off parks.”

Frequently Asked Questions About the 5-Day Tarangire & Serengeti Safari

1. How much does a 5-day Tarangire and Serengeti safari cost?

This private safari currently starts from USD 1,400 per person sharing, based on six travellers using mid-range accommodation. Smaller private groups generally pay more per person because vehicle and guide costs are shared among fewer travellers. Your exact quotation depends on group size, travel dates, accommodation and optional additions.

2. Is 5 days enough for Tarangire and Serengeti?

Yes. Five days works well when the safari concentrates on Tarangire and Serengeti rather than trying to include too many parks. This itinerary provides one Tarangire experience followed by three nights in the Serengeti, allowing considerably more time for game viewing.

3. How many nights do we spend in the Serengeti?

The standard itinerary includes three nights in Serengeti National Park. This provides two full Serengeti game-drive days between your arrival and departure days.

4. Is this a private or group-joining safari?

This is a private Tanzania safari. You travel in your own 4×4 safari Land Cruiser with a professional driver-guide rather than sharing the vehicle with unrelated travellers.

5. Can we see the Great Migration during this safari?

Possibly. Great Migration sightings depend on your travel dates, rainfall and the natural movement of the wildebeest and zebra herds. We can recommend an appropriate Serengeti area based on the season, but specific herd locations and river crossings cannot be guaranteed.

6. What wildlife can we see in Tarangire and Serengeti?

Possible sightings include elephants, lions, cheetahs, leopards, buffaloes, giraffes, wildebeest, zebras, hyenas, gazelles and many other species. Tarangire is particularly associated with elephants and baobab landscapes, while Serengeti provides excellent opportunities to search for predators and plains wildlife. All wildlife sightings remain natural and cannot be guaranteed.

7. What type of safari vehicle will we use?

You travel in a private 4×4 safari Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, designed for wildlife viewing and photography. The private vehicle also provides greater flexibility for stops and game-drive timing.

8. Can we fly from the Serengeti back to Arusha?

Yes. A scheduled Serengeti-to-Arusha flight can be arranged at an additional cost, subject to availability and flight schedules. This is a useful option for travellers who want to avoid the long road journey on the final day.

9. Can we add a Serengeti balloon safari?

Yes. A hot-air balloon safari can be added where available. Balloon operations and departure locations vary according to the season and where you are staying in the Serengeti.

10. Can we combine this safari with Zanzibar?

Yes. This five-day safari can be followed by a Zanzibar beach holiday. Flights, airport transfers and Zanzibar accommodation can be incorporated into a longer Tanzania itinerary.
