The dramatic Tarangire Treetops is located in the pristine Tarangire Conservation Area, a 57,000 acres wildlife management area of baobab, Mopani and wild fig forest on the border of Tarangire National Park. The area has all the same species of wildlife as the Tarangire National Park, including buffalo, lion, cheetah, leopard and elephant. As a result of being outside the park, the tree lodge offers guests great flexibility. Guests can not only partake in professionally guided activities that cannot normally be conducted inside the Park, such as foot safaris, fly-camping, night drives and mountain bike trails, but they can also pop over into one of Africa's most beautiful wildlife parks for game drives.
The lodge itself is made up of large tree houses built on platforms overlooking the Tarangire Sand River where huge herds of elephant can be seen frequently. Each house has a luxury tent with private bathroom facilities, a lounge area and a private verandah with magnificent views of the wild forest, Lake Manyara to the west or Mount Kilimanjaro to the east. The dining area, built like the original safari kitchen, is situated close to the swimming pool and a waterhole, while the library and bar areas with 360-degree views of the terrain are suspended from huge baobab trees. The lodges excellent cuisine and fine wines are a treat.
The conservation initiative is a partnership between the lodge owners and the Masai villages of Lokisale and Makayuni. These local Masai communities earn direct revenue from the Tarangire Treetops accommodation fee and an annual lease fee. The revenue is spent on improving the building of schools and dispensaries, grading of roads and erection of water-pumps. At other times you may slip into the grey-green pool from where you may gaze out over the river. Here stone, smooth decking and wooden loungers with greige covers tie this area to the surrounding landscape. You are part of Africa
Grumeti River, known for its huge crocodiles. These antediluvian reptiles, ancestors of the dinosaurs, lurk in the river waiting for the great migration, where thousand upon thousand of wildebeest and zebra, drawn by ancient behavior patterns and fresh grazing, must cross in order to make the great trek from the Serengeti to Kenya's Masai Mara. The wildebeest wear long beards and an apprehensive expression, as well they might. The Grumeti River crocodiles are waiting for their annual meal and they are on the menu. Dinner and overnight at Grumeti River Camp - LDBB
Day 9 + 10:Serengeti
Two nights spent in Serengeti National Park Tanzania's oldest and most popular national park, also a world heritage site and recently proclaimed a 7th world wide wonder, the Serengeti is famed for its annual migration, when some six million hooves pound the open plains, as more than 200,000 zebra and 300,000 Thomson's gazelle join the wildebeest’s trek for fresh grazing. Yet even when the migration is quiet, the Serengeti offers arguably the most scintillating game-viewing in Africa: great herds of buffalo, smaller groups of elephant and giraffe, and thousands upon thousands of eland, topi, kongoni, impala and Grant’s gazelle.
The spectacle of predator versus prey dominates Tanzania’s greatest park. Golden-maned lion prides feast on the abundance of plain grazers. Solitary leopards haunt the acacia trees lining the Seronera River, while a high density of cheetahs prowls the southeastern plains. Almost uniquely, all three African jackal species occur here, alongside the spotted hyena and a host of more elusive small predators, ranging from the insectivorous aardwolf to the beautiful serval cat.
