Our guides also pay close attention to Amboseli’s wetlands, where elephants, buffaloes, hippos and other wildlife frequently concentrate.
Lake Naivasha: Treat It as More Than an Overnight Stop
Lake Naivasha is strategically positioned between Amboseli and the Masai Mara, helping break up what would otherwise be a long road journey. If arrival time allows, an afternoon boat safari adds a completely different experience to the itinerary. However, we do not recommend rushing the boat excursion if traffic or road conditions result in a late arrival—the following Masai Mara portion is the wildlife priority of this safari.
Masai Mara: Do Not Follow the Same Route Every Day
With four nights in the Masai Mara, there is no reason to repeat the same game-drive circuit each day. Our guides consider recent wildlife reports, predator territories, weather, road conditions and seasonal animal movements before deciding which areas to explore. One day may concentrate on open plains for cheetahs and grazing herds, while another may focus on riverine areas where lions, leopards, elephants and other wildlife may be active.

Between approximately July and October, wildebeest and zebra movements can influence the day’s game-drive plan. Our guides use current information from the field to determine where concentrations of animals have recently been reported rather than assuming the herds will be in the same location every day. Mara River crossings are unpredictable natural events, so we never recommend planning a safari around a guaranteed crossing.
Four Nights in the Mara Give You an Important Advantage
Wildlife does not operate according to an itinerary. A lion pride may remain inactive for several hours, a leopard may disappear into vegetation, or changing weather may alter animal movement. Having four nights in the Masai Mara gives your guide time to revisit productive areas and adjust later game drives according to what you have already seen. This is one of the main reasons we prefer this itinerary to faster circuits that spend only one or two nights in the Mara.
