Safari Expert Tip: This itinerary is especially attractive to travellers who want to spend meaningful time in two major wildlife ecosystems rather than rush through several parks. With two nights in the Maasai Mara and three nights in Central Serengeti, guests have opportunities for extended game viewing, wildlife photography and a comfortable mid-range safari experience.

6 Days Kenya & Tanzania Mid-Range Safari Overview

Experience the extraordinary wildlife and natural beauty of East Africa on our 6 Days Kenya & Tanzania Mid-Range Safari, a cross-border adventure connecting Kenya's world-famous Maasai Mara National Reserve with Tanzania's spectacular Serengeti National Park.

Designed for travellers seeking an excellent balance of comfort, adventure and authentic African wilderness experiences, this six-day itinerary combines exceptional wildlife-viewing opportunities with carefully selected mid-range safari accommodation.

Your journey begins in Nairobi, Kenya, before travelling through the scenic Great Rift Valley towards the Maasai Mara. Famous for its abundant wildlife, open grasslands and large predator populations, the Maasai Mara provides opportunities to observe lions, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, cheetahs and many other species in their natural habitat.

Spend two nights at Mara Sopa Lodge, enjoying a comfortable safari base while exploring the reserve's varied wildlife habitats. Depending on the season, visitors may also encounter large herds of wildebeest and zebras associated with the Great Migration.

After exploring the Maasai Mara, continue towards Tanzania through the Isebania/Sirari border crossing, completing immigration formalities before proceeding to the Serengeti.

The Serengeti is one of Africa's most celebrated wildlife destinations, renowned for its immense savannah landscapes, predator-rich ecosystems and extraordinary diversity of animals.

Your accommodation for the next three nights is Serengeti Kati Kati Tented Camp, a classic mid-range safari camp in Central Serengeti. Its wilderness setting provides an immersive safari atmosphere while offering the comfort of permanent guest tents and essential camp facilities.

With time dedicated to exploring Central Serengeti, guests can enjoy game drives in search of lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, wildebeest and numerous antelope species. The region is particularly rewarding for wildlife photography and predator sightings, although all encounters depend on natural animal movements.

What Makes This 6-Day Kenya & Tanzania Safari Special?

Unlike itineraries that attempt to cover numerous destinations within a limited period, this safari focuses on two iconic wildlife areas, allowing travellers to appreciate their different landscapes, wildlife habitats and safari experiences.

The Maasai Mara is celebrated for its productive grassland habitats and seasonal migration activity, while Central Serengeti offers extensive plains, rocky kopjes and excellent year-round wildlife-viewing opportunities.

The combination of Mara Sopa Lodge and Serengeti Kati Kati Tented Camp creates a comfortable mid-range safari experience, blending traditional lodge hospitality with an authentic tented-camp atmosphere.

Great Migration & Wildlife Experiences

The Maasai Mara and Serengeti form part of the greater Mara–Serengeti ecosystem, home to the world-famous Great Wildebeest Migration.

Between approximately July and October, migrating herds may gather in the northern Serengeti and Maasai Mara, creating opportunities to witness dramatic wildlife interactions and, with suitable positioning and timing, river crossings.

However, this itinerary's Serengeti accommodation is in the Central Serengeti rather than the Northern Serengeti, so Mara River crossings in Tanzania are not a standard scheduled activity. Wildlife movements and sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Outside the peak migration period, both parks remain rewarding safari destinations, with resident predators, herbivores and diverse birdlife.

Who Is This Safari Best For?

This Kenya and Tanzania wildlife safari is suitable for couples, honeymooners, friends, first-time safari visitors and wildlife photography enthusiasts seeking a comfortable cross-border adventure.

It is particularly appealing to travellers who prefer mid-range lodge and tented-camp accommodation rather than basic public campsites, while still prioritizing authentic wildlife experiences.

Safari Price: From USD 2,895 per person sharing, based on two adults travelling together.

Discover the best of the Maasai Mara and Serengeti with East Africa Jungle, combining local safari expertise, carefully planned travel arrangements and memorable African wildlife encounters.

Later in the afternoon, depart for your first exciting Maasai Mara game drive. Explore the reserve's open grasslands in search of elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes and various antelope species.

During the Great Migration season, generally between July and October, large herds of wildebeest and zebras may move through the reserve. Depending on wildlife activity and your location, you may also visit areas associated with the Mara River migration.

Enjoy a packed picnic lunch during your game drive, allowing more time to explore the reserve without returning to the lodge at midday.

In the late afternoon, return to Mara Sopa Lodge for dinner and overnight accommodation.

Depending on border processing, road conditions and arrival time, you may encounter wildlife along the permitted park route towards Central Serengeti.

Arrive at Serengeti Kati Kati Tented Camp, check into your comfortable safari tent and enjoy dinner surrounded by the atmosphere of the African wilderness.

Look out for large elephant herds, graceful giraffes, grazing zebras, wildebeest, hyenas, jackals and the predators that inhabit this remarkable ecosystem.

The Serengeti offers exceptional opportunities for wildlife photography, particularly during the cooler morning hours and late afternoon when the golden light illuminates the savannah.

Depending on the season, you may encounter migrating wildebeest and zebra herds passing through parts of the Serengeti ecosystem. However, migration locations change throughout the year, and sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Enjoy a picnic lunch in the park before continuing your game drive.

Return to Serengeti Kati Kati Tented Camp for your final safari dinner and overnight stay.

Elephants: Watch elephant families moving through savannah landscapes, feeding on vegetation and interacting within their herds.

African Buffaloes: Large buffalo herds inhabit both wildlife areas and are frequently encountered during game drives.

Rhinoceroses: Black rhinos occur in parts of the greater Mara–Serengeti ecosystem, although sightings are uncommon and cannot be guaranteed.

Great Wildebeest Migration – Seasonal Wildlife Spectacle

The Great Wildebeest Migration is one of the world's most remarkable natural wildlife events, involving the seasonal movement of vast wildebeest herds accompanied by zebras and other grazing animals across the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem.

The movement is primarily influenced by rainfall, fresh grazing and water availability rather than fixed calendar dates.

During approximately July to October, migrating herds may reach the Northern Serengeti and Maasai Mara, where some animals cross the Mara River.

Travellers visiting the Maasai Mara during this period may have opportunities to observe migrating herds, predator activity and, with suitable timing and considerable luck, river crossings.

Important: This itinerary includes three nights at Serengeti Kati Kati Tented Camp in Central Serengeti, not Northern Serengeti. Dedicated Mara River crossing excursions in Tanzania are not included in the standard itinerary.

Migration timing and locations vary from year to year depending on rainfall and natural grazing conditions. The table describes general ecosystem movements, not guaranteed sightings on this specific safari route.

Maasai Mara Wildlife Experiences – Days 1 & 2

The Maasai Mara is renowned for its open grasslands, large predator populations and exceptional wildlife diversity.

During your two days in the Maasai Mara, game drives may reveal:

  • Lions resting or hunting across the savannah.

  • Cheetahs scanning the grasslands for prey.

  • Elephants and buffaloes moving through open habitats.

  • Giraffes, zebras, wildebeest and antelope herds.

  • Hyenas, jackals and other carnivores.

  • Hippos and crocodiles in suitable river habitats.

  • Diverse birdlife, including eagles, vultures and other raptors.

During the migration season, your guide may explore suitable areas for viewing wildebeest and zebra herds, depending on their movements and available time.

Serengeti Wildlife Experiences – Days 3–6

The Serengeti offers expansive savannah landscapes, diverse wildlife habitats and excellent opportunities for extended game viewing.

Your three-night stay at Serengeti Kati Kati Tented Camp provides a base for exploring Central Serengeti, including suitable wildlife habitats around the Seronera region.

Central Serengeti is especially rewarding for:

  • Resident lion prides.

  • Leopards in woodland and riverine habitats.

  • Cheetahs hunting across open plains.

  • Large elephant and buffalo populations.

  • Giraffes, zebras, wildebeest and gazelles.

  • Rocky kopjes that provide shelter for wildlife.

  • Exceptional landscape and wildlife photography.

With two full days dedicated to exploring the Serengeti, guests have opportunities to visit different wildlife-viewing areas rather than relying on a single short game drive.

Wildlife Photography Opportunities

The Maasai Mara and Serengeti offer exceptional photographic opportunities for both amateur and experienced wildlife photographers.

Early mornings and late afternoons often provide beautiful natural light, while the varied landscapes create dramatic backgrounds for wildlife images.

Photographic highlights may include lions resting on kopjes, elephants moving across the plains, cheetahs in grassland habitats and large grazing herds beneath expansive African skies.

Your private safari arrangement allows more flexibility for photography stops, subject to park rules, daylight hours and the agreed schedule.

Best Time for Wildlife Viewing

July–October: Particularly attractive for travellers interested in seasonal migration activity in the Maasai Mara and Northern Serengeti ecosystem.

January–March: Excellent for resident wildlife in Central Serengeti, while major wildebeest calving activity generally occurs farther south around Ndutu.

June–October: Often provides favourable dry-season wildlife-viewing conditions, with animals increasingly concentrated around reliable water sources.

November–December: Green landscapes, birdwatching opportunities and seasonal wildlife movements can make these months rewarding for photography.

The best travel period depends on whether your priority is predator viewing, seasonal migration, photography or general wildlife diversity.

Expert Safari Insight – East Africa Jungle

With more than 16 years of East African safari planning and operations experience, our team recommends this six-day itinerary for travellers seeking a combination of the Maasai Mara's productive wildlife habitats and Central Serengeti's exceptional year-round game viewing.

For guests whose main priority is witnessing Mara River crossings in Tanzania, we recommend considering an extended itinerary with accommodation in Northern Serengeti during the appropriate migration season.

For travellers interested in resident predators, the Big Five and classic East African savannah landscapes, this Maasai Mara and Central Serengeti combination is an excellent choice.

Best Time for a Kenya & Tanzania Wildlife Safari 2027–2028

The best time for a Kenya and Tanzania wildlife safari depends on your preferred wildlife experiences, seasonal weather and interest in the Great Wildebeest Migration. Both the Maasai Mara National Reserve and Serengeti National Park offer rewarding game viewing throughout much of the year, with resident lions, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras and other wildlife.

For our 6 Days Kenya & Tanzania Mid-Range Safari, July to October is especially popular for seasonal migration activity in the Maasai Mara, while January to March and June to October are also attractive for general wildlife viewing and photography.

Best Time to Visit – Month-by-Month Safari Guide

MonthTypical ConditionsWildlife Experiences
JanuaryGenerally warm, with variable rainfallResident wildlife and predator viewing; calving activity farther south in the Serengeti ecosystem
FebruaryOften relatively dryExcellent general game viewing; southern Serengeti calving season
MarchIncreasing rainfall towards month's endGreen landscapes, resident wildlife and photography
AprilMain rainy season in many areasLush scenery, fewer visitors and potentially difficult road conditions
MayRainfall often continues before easingGreen-season wildlife, birdwatching and quieter parks
JuneTransition into the dry seasonImproving wildlife visibility and seasonal herd movements
JulyGenerally dryMaasai Mara migration opportunities and excellent general game viewing
AugustPeak safari seasonPossible Mara River crossings, predator activity and large migrating herds
SeptemberUsually dryMigration activity, predators and excellent wildlife photography
OctoberLate dry season with possible short rainsMigrating herds may remain in the Mara–Northern Serengeti ecosystem
NovemberShort rains may beginGreen landscapes, resident wildlife and birdwatching
DecemberVariable short rains and warm weatherScenic landscapes and rewarding resident wildlife viewing

This calendar reflects typical seasonal patterns. Rainfall, animal movements and migration timing vary annually.

July–October: Best for Great Migration Opportunities

July through October is one of the most sought-after periods for a Maasai Mara and Serengeti safari.

During these months, large wildebeest and zebra herds may occupy parts of the Maasai Mara and Northern Serengeti, depending on rainfall and grazing conditions.

Travellers may witness impressive grazing herds, predator activity and occasionally dramatic Mara River crossings.

Our itinerary includes two nights in the Maasai Mara, offering seasonal migration-viewing opportunities. The three Serengeti nights are at Serengeti Kati Kati Tented Camp in Central Serengeti, so dedicated Northern Serengeti river-crossing excursions are not part of the standard itinerary.

Recommended for: Great Migration enthusiasts, first-time safari travellers, couples and wildlife photographers.

January–March: Excellent for Predators & Resident Wildlife

January through March can provide rewarding wildlife viewing in both the Maasai Mara and Central Serengeti.

The Serengeti's southern plains and Ndutu region are particularly associated with wildebeest calving during this period, attracting predators such as lions, cheetahs and hyenas.

Although the standard six-day itinerary does not visit Ndutu, Central Serengeti remains an excellent destination for resident wildlife, particularly around the Seronera ecosystem.

Recommended for: Big-cat enthusiasts, photographers and travellers seeking a wildlife-focused safari outside the busiest migration months.

April–May: Green Season & Quieter Safari Conditions

April and May generally coincide with the main rainy season across much of the Mara–Serengeti ecosystem.

The landscape becomes greener, visitor numbers may be lower and birdwatching can be rewarding. However, heavy rainfall may affect road conditions, travel times and access to some wildlife-viewing areas.

Accommodation operating schedules also require confirmation, particularly for tented camps.

Recommended for: Experienced safari travellers, birdwatchers and guests who appreciate green landscapes and quieter conditions.

June: Start of the Dry-Season Safari Experience

June often marks the transition towards drier conditions in both Kenya and Tanzania.

As vegetation changes and seasonal water availability decreases, wildlife may become easier to observe in some areas.

The Serengeti migration generally moves through western and northern corridors during this part of the year, although exact movements vary.

Recommended for: Wildlife photographers, couples and travellers seeking a balance between safari conditions and visitor numbers.

November–December: Green Landscapes & Resident Wildlife

November and December often bring seasonal rains that transform the savannah into fresh green landscapes.

Both the Maasai Mara and Central Serengeti continue to support resident wildlife, including lions, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes and numerous bird species.

Although the major migration herds may be elsewhere in the ecosystem, game drives remain rewarding.

Recommended for: Families, honeymooners, birdwatchers and travellers interested in scenic wildlife photography.

Which Month Should You Choose?

For travellers whose main interest is Great Migration activity in the Maasai Mara, we generally recommend July, August, September and early October, while emphasizing that wildlife movements are unpredictable.

For Big Five opportunities, resident predators and general wildlife viewing, the Maasai Mara and Central Serengeti can be visited during many other months.

For travellers prioritizing lower visitor numbers and green landscapes, selected shoulder-season departures may be appealing, provided accommodation and road conditions are suitable.

East Africa Jungle Safari Expert Insight

With over 16 years of East African safari planning and operations experience, we recommend choosing your travel dates according to the wildlife experiences you value most.

Our six-day itinerary offers two nights in the Maasai Mara and three nights in Central Serengeti, creating a strong combination for general wildlife viewing.

Travellers whose main objective is to witness Mara River crossings in Tanzania should consider a longer Northern Serengeti migration itinerary rather than relying on a Central Serengeti stay.

Kenya–Tanzania Border Crossing, Visas & Safari Travel Logistics

Our 6 Days Kenya & Tanzania Mid-Range Wildlife Safari combines two of Africa's most celebrated wildlife destinations: the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya and Serengeti National Park in Tanzania.

Travelling between these destinations involves crossing an international border, completing immigration procedures and coordinating transport between the two countries.

East Africa Jungle assists guests with pre-departure travel information and coordinates the agreed safari transfer arrangements.

Kenya–Tanzania Safari Border Crossing: Isebania/Sirari

On Day 3, your safari travels from Mara Sopa Lodge towards the Isebania/Sirari border crossing.

Isebania is located on the Kenyan side, while Sirari is the corresponding Tanzanian border town.

Although the Maasai Mara and Serengeti form part of the same wildlife ecosystem, visitors cannot drive directly between the parks through the Sand River–Bologonja boundary.

The road journey therefore follows an alternative route through the official Isebania/Sirari border crossing.

Day 3 Border Crossing & Transfer Arrangements

Travel StageWhat to Expect
1. Mara Sopa Lodge departureEarly breakfast and checkout
2. Travel to IsebaniaOverland transfer through southwestern Kenya
3. Kenyan immigrationPassport checks and exit formalities
4. Tanzanian immigrationEntry authorization and passport checks
5. Vehicle and guide arrangementsTransfer to the assigned Tanzania safari vehicle, where applicable
6. Continue towards SerengetiDrive through northern Tanzania towards the appropriate park entrance
7. Serengeti Kati Kati arrivalCamp check-in, dinner and overnight stay

Important Travel Information: Day 3 is a full-day transfer rather than a dedicated game-drive day. The journey may take approximately 9–12 hours or longer, depending on the chosen route, road conditions, immigration processing and park access. Arrival before dark must be planned and confirmed.

Will You Change Safari Vehicles at the Border?

Cross-border safari operations may require separate safari vehicles and driver-guides for Kenya and Tanzania.

Where a vehicle change is necessary, your Kenyan safari team will coordinate the handover to the assigned Tanzanian team.

The itinerary is designed as a private safari, meaning you travel with your booked companions rather than joining unrelated guests.

Your final quotation will identify the vehicle arrangements, guide assignments and transfer services provided in each country.

Kenya Entry Requirements – Electronic Travel Authorization

Many international visitors travelling to Kenya require an approved Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before departure.

Eligibility depends on nationality, passport status and applicable exemptions.

Travellers should check the official Kenyan immigration website before travelling and allow sufficient time for application processing.

Official Kenya eTA Website: https://www.etakenya.go.ke/

Visitors should also check current Kenyan travel health insurance requirements, which may apply in addition to the eTA.

Tanzania Tourist Visa Requirements

Travellers entering Tanzania from Kenya may require a Tanzanian tourist visa, depending on their nationality.

Where applicable, travellers should obtain the appropriate entry authorization before reaching the Isebania/Sirari border.

Official Tanzania eVisa Website: https://visa.immigration.go.tz/

Guests should check visa eligibility, passport validity, application procedures and processing times well before departure.

A Kenya travel authorization does not automatically authorize entry into Tanzania.

Passport & Travel Documents

Before beginning your Kenya and Tanzania safari, ensure you have:

  • A passport valid for at least six months beyond the relevant entry date.

  • Sufficient blank passport pages for immigration stamps.

  • Approved Kenya eTA, where required.

  • Valid Tanzania visa or applicable visa exemption.

  • Safari booking confirmation and accommodation details.

  • Travel and medical insurance documents.

  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate where required.

  • Copies of your important travel documents.

Entry requirements vary by nationality and may change before your 2027–2028 departure.

Yellow Fever Vaccination & Health Requirements

Yellow fever documentation is particularly important for travellers entering Tanzania after visiting Kenya.

Tanzanian health authorities may require a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate from travellers arriving from countries classified as yellow fever risk areas, subject to applicable exemptions.

Guests should confirm their requirements with an authorized travel-health provider before departure.

Travellers should also obtain medical advice about malaria prevention, routine vaccinations and other destination-specific health considerations.

Safari Arrival & Departure Arrangements

Day 1 – Nairobi, Kenya

Your safari begins with pickup from your agreed Nairobi hotel or meeting point before travelling to the Maasai Mara.

Guests arriving internationally are advised to spend the preceding night in Nairobi, particularly if their flight arrives late.

Day 6 – Serengeti, Tanzania

Your safari concludes after the final Serengeti activities and the onward transfer specified in your confirmed booking.

Possible arrangements include an overland journey towards Arusha or a separately arranged flight from a Serengeti airstrip.

The final drop-off location, flight arrangements and any associated costs will be clearly specified before booking.

Luggage & Safari Travel Comfort

For a six-day cross-border safari, we recommend soft-sided travel bags that are easier to handle and store in safari vehicles.

If your itinerary includes a domestic or regional light-aircraft flight, stricter luggage restrictions may apply.

Many safari flights use an allowance of approximately 15 kg for checked soft luggage plus 5 kg for hand luggage, but your airline's confirmed baggage policy takes precedence.

East Africa Jungle Cross-Border Safari Assistance

Our safari operations team assists with coordinating:

  • Safari pickup and departure arrangements.

  • Kenya and Tanzania driver-guide assignments.

  • Cross-border vehicle transfers.

  • Lodge and tented-camp reservations.

  • National park entry arrangements.

  • Departure transfers and optional onward flights.

  • Pre-departure travel information.

What to Pack for Your 6-Day Kenya & Tanzania Wildlife Safari

Packing appropriately for your 6 Days Kenya & Tanzania Mid-Range Wildlife Safari will help you stay comfortable during game drives, lodge stays and the cross-border journey between the Maasai Mara and Serengeti.

Both destinations experience changing temperatures throughout the day. Early morning game drives can be cool, while afternoons are often warm and sunny.

We recommend lightweight, comfortable clothing, practical footwear, sun protection and essential travel documents.

Essential Safari Packing Checklist

CategoryRecommended Items

Warm LayersFleece, sweater or lightweight jacket
Rain ProtectionLightweight waterproof jacket

Sun ProtectionWide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and SPF 30+ sunscreen

Personal CareToiletries, insect repellent and hand sanitizer
Medical EssentialsPersonal medication and basic first-aid supplies
Travel DocumentsPassport, visas, eTA, insurance and vaccination records
Safari BagSoft-sided duffel bag and small daypack

1. Safari Clothing – Comfortable & Neutral Colours

Pack breathable clothing in neutral colours such as khaki, olive, beige and brown.

These colours are practical for game drives and blend naturally with the surrounding landscape.

For a six-day safari, we recommend:

  • 3–4 lightweight safari shirts or T-shirts.

  • 2–3 pairs of comfortable trousers or shorts.

  • 1 long-sleeved shirt for sun and insect protection.

  • 1 fleece or warm sweater.

  • 1 lightweight waterproof jacket.

  • Comfortable underwear and socks.

  • Sleepwear and casual clothing for evenings.

Avoid relying entirely on shorts and light shirts, as early morning temperatures can be surprisingly cool.

2. Comfortable Safari Footwear

For this wildlife-focused itinerary, heavy hiking boots are generally unnecessary.

Comfortable closed-toe walking shoes or trainers are suitable for lodge grounds, travel days and permitted short walks.

Pack sandals or lightweight footwear for relaxing at Mara Sopa Lodge and Serengeti Kati Kati Tented Camp.

3. Camera, Binoculars & Wildlife Photography Equipment

The Maasai Mara and Serengeti provide outstanding opportunities for wildlife photography.

Useful equipment includes:

  • Camera or smartphone with a good zoom capability.

  • Telephoto lens for wildlife photography.

  • Binoculars for spotting distant animals.

  • Spare batteries and memory cards.

  • Lens-cleaning cloth.

  • Protective camera bag.

  • Power bank and charging cables.

A camera lens in the 100–400 mm range is useful for photographing distant wildlife, although excellent safari photographs can also be captured with smaller cameras and smartphones.

4. Sun Protection & Personal Care

The East African sun can be strong, especially during midday game drives.

Bring high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat and lip balm.

Insect repellent is also recommended, particularly for evenings around safari accommodation.

Carry personal toiletries and any specialist products you may need during your stay.

5. Personal Medication & Health Essentials

Pack sufficient supplies of prescription medication for the entire safari, along with any required medical documentation.

A small personal medical kit may include:

  • Adhesive bandages.

  • Antiseptic wipes.

  • Oral rehydration salts.

  • Personal pain-relief medication.

  • Motion-sickness medication where appropriate.

  • Insect-bite treatment.

  • Prescribed malaria prevention medication, if recommended by your healthcare provider.

Consult a qualified travel-health professional before departure for advice specific to your medical needs and travel dates.

6. Important Travel Documents

Because this itinerary crosses from Kenya into Tanzania, keep your travel documents accessible on Day 3.

Carry your passport, applicable Kenya eTA, Tanzania visa, safari confirmation, travel insurance details and any required vaccination certificates.

We recommend keeping digital copies of important documents on your phone and securely backed up online.

7. Luggage Recommendations for Safari Vehicles

Soft-sided duffel bags are generally more convenient than large rigid suitcases for safari vehicles.

Bring a small daypack for items needed during game drives, such as drinking water, sunscreen, camera equipment, sunglasses and a warm layer.

Guests using light-aircraft transfers must comply with their airline's confirmed luggage restrictions.

8. What Not to Pack

Avoid carrying unnecessary valuables, excessive luggage and large quantities of clothing.

Drones should not be brought for safari photography without obtaining all necessary permissions from the relevant aviation and protected-area authorities.

Single-use plastic bags are restricted in Kenya and Tanzania, so travellers should check current regulations and use reusable packing alternatives.

East Africa Jungle Safari Packing Tip

For our 6 Days Kenya & Tanzania Wildlife Safari, prioritize practical clothing, a warm layer for early morning game drives, binoculars and reliable sun protection.

Because the itinerary combines two wildlife destinations and an international border crossing, travelling with manageable luggage and keeping your documents organized will make the journey more comfortable.

Safari Accommodation: Mara Sopa Lodge (2 Nights) + Serengeti Kati Kati Tented Camp (3 Nights)

Safari Travel Tips, Health & Safety – Kenya & Tanzania 2027–2028

Preparing for your 6 Days Kenya & Tanzania Wildlife Safari helps ensure a comfortable, safe and memorable journey through the Maasai Mara National Reserve and Serengeti National Park.

From wildlife-viewing etiquette and health precautions to travel insurance and cross-border requirements, these practical tips will help you enjoy your mid-range African safari with confidence.

1. Follow Your Safari Guide's Wildlife Safety Instructions

The Maasai Mara and Serengeti are protected wilderness areas where wild animals roam freely.

For your safety, always follow your safari guide's instructions during game drives and at accommodation properties.

  • Remain inside your safari vehicle unless your guide confirms it is safe to exit in a designated area.

  • Never feed, touch or attempt to approach wild animals.

  • Avoid loud noises or sudden movements around wildlife.

  • Maintain appropriate distances from animals, particularly predators and elephants.

  • Never ask your guide to drive off-road where prohibited or interfere with animal behaviour.

  • Keep children supervised throughout wildlife-viewing activities.

Wildlife sightings, including Big Five encounters and Great Migration river crossings, are natural events and cannot be guaranteed.

2. Health Precautions, Vaccinations & Malaria Prevention

Before travelling to Kenya and Tanzania, consult a qualified travel-health professional, ideally 4–8 weeks before departure.

Depending on your medical history and itinerary, your healthcare provider may recommend routine vaccination updates, destination-specific vaccinations and malaria prevention.

Yellow Fever: Travellers crossing from Kenya into Tanzania should check whether a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate is required under the entry rules applicable to their nationality, age and travel history.

Malaria: Both safari regions may present malaria exposure risks. Ask your healthcare provider about appropriate preventive medication and use insect repellent, long sleeves and other mosquito-bite precautions.

Food & Drinking Water: Drink treated or bottled water, maintain good hand hygiene and avoid consuming water from unverified sources.

Personal Medication: Carry sufficient prescription medication for the entire journey, preferably in original packaging.

For current destination-specific guidance, consult the CDC Travelers' Health website and the relevant national health authorities.

3. Travel Insurance & Emergency Medical Support

Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended for all guests joining our 6 Days Kenya & Tanzania Mid-Range Safari.

Your policy should cover:

  • Emergency medical treatment and hospitalization.

  • Medical evacuation from remote safari destinations.

  • Trip cancellation and interruption.

  • Lost or delayed baggage.

  • Flight delays and missed connections.

  • Safari activities included in your itinerary.

East Africa Jungle can provide information about optional emergency evacuation arrangements, including services such as AMREF Flying Doctors, subject to availability and the terms of the selected coverage.

Medical evacuation membership does not replace comprehensive travel insurance.

4. Safari Vehicle Safety & Road Travel

Your itinerary involves game drives, long-distance road travel and an international border crossing.

Travel takes place in suitable safari vehicles operated by experienced driver-guides.

For a comfortable journey:

  • Wear your seat belt whenever the vehicle is moving.

  • Keep cameras, phones and loose belongings secure.

  • Carry drinking water and sun protection.

  • Inform your guide if you feel unwell or need a break.

  • Expect uneven roads, dust and occasional bumpy driving conditions.

  • Follow your guide's instructions when standing through the pop-up roof during permitted wildlife viewing.

Day 3 involves a substantial journey between the Maasai Mara and Central Serengeti. Travel schedules must allow for immigration procedures, road conditions and applicable park access times.

5. Safety at Mara Sopa Lodge & Serengeti Kati Kati Tented Camp

Your safari includes two nights at Mara Sopa Lodge and three nights at Serengeti Kati Kati Tented Camp.

Both properties provide accommodation suited to safari travellers, although their environments differ.

At Mara Sopa Lodge, follow the property's safety guidance when using communal areas, pathways and leisure facilities.

At Serengeti Kati Kati Tented Camp, remember that the camp is located in a wildlife environment where animals may move through surrounding areas.

For your safety:

  • Follow camp staff instructions, particularly after dark.

  • Use an escort when required for movement between your tent and communal areas.

  • Never approach animals encountered around camp.

  • Keep tent doors and closures secured according to camp guidance.

  • Do not leave food outside your tent.

  • Supervise children at all times.

  • Report any safety concerns to camp management immediately.

6. Weather, Sun Protection & Safari Comfort

The Maasai Mara and Serengeti experience changing weather conditions throughout the year.

Early mornings and evenings can be cool, while afternoons may be warm and sunny.

Pack lightweight clothing, a warm jacket, comfortable footwear, sunglasses and sunscreen.

During rainy periods, carry a waterproof layer and allow flexibility for weather-related changes to road conditions or game-drive routes.

7. Kenya–Tanzania Border Travel Safety

Your safari crosses from Kenya into Tanzania through the official Isebania/Sirari border crossing.

Keep your passport, entry authorization, visa documentation and travel insurance details accessible.

Only use official immigration channels and follow the instructions of authorized border officials.

Your East Africa Jungle safari team will coordinate the agreed transfer arrangements, including any required vehicle or guide change.

8. Responsible Wildlife Tourism

East Africa Jungle encourages responsible safari practices that respect wildlife, local communities and protected ecosystems.

During your safari:

  • Observe wildlife without disturbing natural behaviour.

  • Avoid littering or leaving waste inside national parks.

  • Respect local customs and cultural traditions.

  • Ask permission before photographing local residents.

  • Avoid purchasing products made from endangered wildlife.

  • Follow protected-area rules and your guide's instructions.

Responsible tourism helps preserve the Maasai Mara and Serengeti for future generations.

9. Emergency Contacts & Safari Assistance

Before departure, guests should receive their confirmed safari itinerary, accommodation details and operational contact information.

Keep your guide's contact details, travel insurance emergency number and relevant personal medical information readily accessible.

If an unexpected issue occurs during the safari, contact your driver-guide or East Africa Jungle safari coordinator promptly.

Our first African safari was unforgettable. John Peter was flexible and responsive throughout the planning process. Our guide, Joseph, was attentive, knowledgeable and an excellent driver. Every game drive was exciting, and we were fortunate to see all the Big Five multiple times. The safari experience exceeded our expectations.

Frequently Asked Questions – 6 Days Kenya & Tanzania Wildlife Safari

1. How much does the 6 Days Kenya & Tanzania Wildlife Safari cost?

Our 6 Days Kenya & Tanzania Mid-Range Safari starts from USD 2,895 per person sharing, based on two adults travelling together and sharing a double or twin room. Final prices depend on travel dates, accommodation availability and confirmed safari services.

2. Is this a private or shared group safari?

This itinerary is designed as a private mid-range safari, with a dedicated safari vehicle for your travelling party. Vehicle and guide arrangements in Kenya and Tanzania, including any border handover, will be specified in your confirmed quotation.

3. Which national parks are included in the six-day safari?

The itinerary visits two iconic wildlife destinations: Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya and Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. It does not include Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Nakuru or Amboseli National Park.

4. Where will we stay during the safari?

You will spend two nights at Mara Sopa Lodge in the Maasai Mara region and three nights at Serengeti Kati Kati Tented Camp in Central Serengeti. The package includes five nights of mid-range accommodation, subject to availability.

5. Can we see the Big Five on this safari?

Yes, both destinations offer opportunities to encounter lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes and rhinoceroses. However, rhinos and leopards can be difficult to locate, and sightings of any wildlife species cannot be guaranteed.

6. What is the best time to see the Great Migration?

July through October is generally the most popular period for seasonal migration activity in the Maasai Mara and Northern Serengeti. Actual wildebeest movements and river crossings depend on rainfall, grazing conditions and natural wildlife behaviour.

7. Does this safari include Mara River crossings?

During the migration season, your Maasai Mara game drives may provide opportunities to observe migrating herds and potentially river crossings. However, crossings cannot be guaranteed. The Serengeti accommodation is in Central Serengeti, not the Northern Serengeti river-crossing area.

8. How do we travel from the Maasai Mara to Serengeti?

On Day 3, you travel by road through the Isebania/Sirari border crossing, completing Kenyan exit and Tanzanian entry formalities. The journey is long and may involve a vehicle or driver-guide change. Final transfer arrangements will be confirmed before departure.

9. Do we need separate visas for Kenya and Tanzania?

Entry requirements depend on nationality. Many visitors require a Kenya Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) and a separate Tanzania visa. Travellers should check official immigration requirements before departure.

10. What type of safari vehicle will we use?

Our preferred transport is a 4×4 Toyota Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, providing suitable wildlife-viewing and photography opportunities. We arrange window seats and limit vehicles to a maximum of seven guests. Exact vehicle arrangements are confirmed in your quotation.

11. Are meals and park entrance fees included?

The proposed package includes full-board accommodation, scheduled game drives and applicable Maasai Mara and Serengeti park fees. The final quotation will confirm all included meals, park charges, transport services and any additional expenses.

12. Can children join this Kenya and Tanzania safari?

Yes. Families with children can request a private safari quotation. Child pricing, bedding arrangements, room availability and applicable park-fee categories depend on children's ages and the accommodation providers' policies.

13. Can solo travellers book this safari?

Yes. Solo travellers can request a private safari quotation. Single-room supplements and private transport costs may apply. The advertised USD 2,895 starting price is based on two adults sharing.

14. Can we add a hot-air balloon safari?

Yes. Optional balloon safaris may be arranged in the Maasai Mara or Serengeti, subject to operator availability, weather conditions and applicable restrictions. Balloon activities are not included in the standard safari price.

15. Where does the safari start and finish?

The safari starts in Nairobi, Kenya, with pickup from your agreed hotel or meeting point. The final departure location in Tanzania will be specified in your confirmed itinerary, together with any included onward transport.

16. How do we book the 6 Days Kenya & Tanzania Wildlife Safari?

Contact East Africa Jungle with your preferred travel dates, number of adults and children, and room preferences. Our safari team will confirm availability, final pricing, transport arrangements and booking conditions before requesting payment.
