Great Migration, Mara River Crossings & Serengeti Wildlife
Experience one of Africa's greatest wildlife spectacles on our 8 Days Northern Serengeti Family Safari 2027–2028. With three nights near the Mara River, families have multiple opportunities to search for migrating wildebeest and zebras while exploring Northern Serengeti's remarkable wilderness.
Mara River Crossings – July to October
Between approximately July and October, large wildebeest herds may gather along the Mara River during the seasonal Great Migration. River crossings depend on rainfall, grazing conditions and animal movements, so sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Big Five & Serengeti Wildlife
Beyond the migration, Serengeti National Park offers opportunities to observe:
Big Cats: Lions, cheetahs and leopards.
Large Mammals: Elephants, buffaloes, giraffes and hippos.
Migrating Herds: Wildebeest, zebras and gazelles.
River Wildlife: Nile crocodiles and hippos.
Birdlife: Eagles, vultures, storks and numerous savannah species.
Rhinos are present in the wider Serengeti ecosystem but are rarely encountered on standard Central and Northern Serengeti game drives.
Why Three Nights in Northern Serengeti?
Staying at Gnu Mara River Camp for three nights provides more flexibility to explore different wildlife areas, follow seasonal herd movements and spend additional time near potential river crossing points.
Wildlife sightings and Mara River crossings are natural events and cannot be guaranteed.
Best Time for a Northern Serengeti Family Safari 2027–2028
The best time for a Northern Serengeti family safari is July to October, when the Great Migration typically reaches the Mara River region. Families can enjoy spectacular wildlife viewing, comfortable dry-season game drives and opportunities to witness wildebeest river crossings.
Northern Serengeti Safari Seasons
| Travel Period | Wildlife Experience | Family Safari Suitability |
|---|---|---|
| July–August | Migrating herds begin gathering around the Mara River | Excellent |
| September | Often a strong month for migration activity and potential river crossings | Excellent |
| October | Migration herds may remain in Northern Serengeti before moving south | Very Good |
| November–June | Wildlife viewing continues, but migration herds are generally elsewhere | Better suited to alternative Serengeti routes |
Which Month Should Families Choose?
August and September are particularly attractive for families hoping to experience the Great Migration. July and October can also offer rewarding sightings, depending on rainfall and herd movements.
For official park information, visit Tanzania National Parks.
Expert Tip: Book Northern Serengeti family accommodation well in advance for July–October, particularly during school holidays. River crossings are unpredictable and cannot be guaranteed.

Expert Safari Insights
John Peter | 16+ Years of East Africa Safari Experience
“For families visiting Northern Serengeti, I recommend travelling between July and October, particularly August and September, when migration herds are often concentrated around the Mara River. Spending three nights in Northern Serengeti gives families greater flexibility to explore different crossing areas without rushing. I also recommend flying from Kogatende to Arusha on the final day to avoid a long road journey, especially with younger children. River crossings are unpredictable, so patience and flexible game drives are essential.”
