Great Migration & Big Five Wildlife Experiences in Kenya and Tanzania
One of the greatest attractions of our 9 Days Kenya & Tanzania Budget Safari is the opportunity to explore two world-famous wildlife ecosystems: the Masai Mara in Kenya and the Serengeti in Tanzania.
Together, these destinations form part of the greater Mara–Serengeti ecosystem, renowned for its exceptional predator populations, expansive savannah landscapes and the annual movement of wildebeest and zebras.
Your safari also includes Lake Nakuru National Park, an important rhino habitat, and Ngorongoro Crater, where diverse wildlife can be found within a remarkable volcanic landscape.
The Great Migration – Masai Mara & Serengeti
The Great Migration is one of Africa's most spectacular natural wildlife events, involving large numbers of wildebeest, zebras and other grazing animals moving through the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem in search of fresh pasture and water.
Because the migration follows seasonal rainfall and grazing conditions, herd locations vary from year to year. River crossings and large herd sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Typical Great Migration Calendar
| Travel Period | Typical Migration Location | Wildlife Experience |
|---|---|---|
| January–March | Southern Serengeti & Ndutu | Calving season and predator activity |
| April–May | Southern and Central Serengeti | Herd movements and green-season wildlife |
| June | Central and Western Serengeti | Northward movement and possible Grumeti River activity |
| July–August | Northern Serengeti & Masai Mara | Possible Mara River crossings |
| September–October | Northern Serengeti & Masai Mara | Migration herds and possible river crossings |
| November–December | Central and Eastern Serengeti | Southward migration movements |
Important for This 9-Day Safari: The standard itinerary includes three nights in the Masai Mara and three nights in the central Serengeti at Seronera Public Campsite. It does not include dedicated overnight stays in Northern Serengeti or Ndutu.
During migration season, guests may encounter herds in the areas visited, but reaching distant migration hotspots may require itinerary changes, additional travel time and supplementary costs.
Big Five Safari Experiences
The Big Five—lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros—are among the most sought-after wildlife species on an East African safari.
This nine-day itinerary visits several important wildlife habitats, giving travellers opportunities to search for all five species across Kenya and Tanzania.
| Big Five Animal | Main Wildlife Destinations |
|---|---|
| Lion | Masai Mara, Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater |
| Leopard | Masai Mara & Serengeti |
| Elephant | Masai Mara, Serengeti & Ngorongoro |
| Buffalo | Lake Nakuru, Masai Mara, Serengeti & Ngorongoro |
| Rhinoceros | Lake Nakuru & Ngorongoro Crater |
Wildlife sightings depend on natural animal behaviour, weather, habitat conditions and the experience of your safari guide. No individual species can be guaranteed.
Lake Nakuru – Rhino Conservation & Birdlife
Lake Nakuru National Park is particularly important for black and white rhinoceros conservation in Kenya.
During your afternoon game drive, look out for rhinos, Rothschild's giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, waterbucks and other wildlife.
The park also supports numerous bird species, including pelicans and flamingos, although flamingo numbers vary according to lake conditions and food availability.
Masai Mara – Lions, Cheetahs & Seasonal Migration
With three nights in Masai Mara, you have an afternoon game drive and two full days to explore the reserve's remarkable wildlife habitats.
The Mara is especially famous for lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, giraffes and large herbivore populations.
During the seasonal migration period, wildebeest and zebra herds may enter the reserve from the Serengeti. Your guide can explore suitable wildlife areas, including the Mara River region when conditions permit.
Serengeti – Big Cats & Endless Savannah
Three nights at Seronera Public Campsite provide an excellent base for exploring the central Serengeti.
The Seronera Valley and surrounding plains support resident wildlife throughout the year, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras and hyenas.
Rocky kopjes, open grasslands and riverine habitats create rewarding opportunities for wildlife photography and observing predator behaviour.
Ngorongoro Crater – Wildlife in a Volcanic Caldera
Your final game drive takes place inside Ngorongoro Crater, one of Tanzania's most remarkable wildlife destinations.
The crater supports lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas and a small population of endangered black rhinos.
Its varied habitats, including grasslands, woodland and freshwater areas, allow visitors to observe numerous wildlife species within a relatively compact area.
When Is the Best Time for Wildlife on This Safari?
This Kenya and Tanzania budget safari can be enjoyed throughout the year, with different wildlife experiences depending on the season.
July–October: Popular for seasonal migration activity in the Masai Mara and northern Serengeti, although the standard Serengeti accommodation is in Seronera.
January–March: Excellent general wildlife viewing, with calving activity concentrated farther south in the Serengeti–Ndutu ecosystem.
April–May: Green landscapes, fewer visitors in some areas and rewarding resident wildlife viewing, with possible heavy rainfall.
November–December: Good opportunities to see resident wildlife, with migration movements influenced by seasonal rainfall.
For travellers primarily interested in witnessing Mara River crossings, East Africa Jungle can recommend suitable dates and discuss a customised route based on expected herd movements.
Plan Your Kenya & Tanzania Wildlife Safari
Experience the Big Five, explore the legendary Masai Mara and Serengeti, and discover the extraordinary wildlife of Ngorongoro Crater.

Best Time for Your 9 Days Kenya & Tanzania Budget Safari

Our 9-day private safari visits Lake Nakuru, Masai Mara, Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater, offering excellent wildlife-viewing opportunities throughout the year.
July to October is particularly popular for the seasonal Great Migration in Masai Mara, while January to March offers rewarding predator sightings and green landscapes. The central Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater support resident wildlife year-round, making this itinerary suitable for travel in different seasons.
Best Time to Visit Kenya & Tanzania – Month-by-Month
| Travel Months | Safari Conditions | Main Wildlife Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| January–March | Generally warm, with occasional rainfall | Big cats, resident wildlife and southern Serengeti calving season |
| April–May | Long rains, green landscapes and fewer visitors | Birdwatching, resident wildlife and lush scenery |
| June | Transition into the dry season | Excellent general game viewing and northward migration movements |
| July–August | Dry season and popular safari months | Masai Mara migration herds and possible river crossings |
| September–October | Generally dry, with strong wildlife-viewing opportunities | Masai Mara predators, resident wildlife and seasonal migration |
| November–December | Short rains and greener landscapes | Migratory birds, resident wildlife and changing herd movements |
July–October: Great Migration Safari Season
July to October is one of the most popular periods for a Kenya and Tanzania safari. During these months, migrating wildebeest and zebra herds may move between the northern Serengeti and Masai Mara.
With three nights in Masai Mara, this itinerary provides opportunities to explore the reserve and potentially visit the Mara River area when conditions permit. River crossings are unpredictable and cannot be guaranteed.
January–March: Big Cats & Green-Season Wildlife
January to March offers excellent opportunities to observe lions, cheetahs, leopards and other resident wildlife.
The wildebeest calving season generally occurs in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu ecosystem, outside the standard central Serengeti route included in this package. Travellers interested specifically in calving can request a customised itinerary.
April–May: Green-Season Budget Safari
The long-rain season brings lush landscapes, dramatic skies and fewer visitors to some safari destinations. Wildlife viewing remains possible in Lake Nakuru, Masai Mara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater.
Heavy rainfall can affect road conditions, game-drive routes and travel times, particularly during the Kenya–Tanzania border transfer.
November–December: Scenic Landscapes & Resident Wildlife
The short-rain season transforms parts of Kenya and Tanzania into greener landscapes, attracting birdlife and providing beautiful photographic opportunities.
Lions, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes and other resident wildlife can still be observed throughout the safari destinations, although weather and animal movements vary.
Which Month Do We Recommend?
For this specific 9-day itinerary, July to October is a strong choice for travellers prioritising seasonal migration opportunities in Masai Mara.
For general Big Five wildlife viewing, January to March and June to October are also excellent options.
The standard itinerary includes three nights at Seronera Public Campsite in central Serengeti. Travellers seeking Northern Serengeti river crossings should request a customised route.

Kenya–Tanzania Border Crossing & Visa Requirements 2027–2028
Our 9 Days Kenya & Tanzania Budget Safari includes an overland border crossing from Kenya into Tanzania on Day 5, allowing travellers to experience Masai Mara and Serengeti National Park on one unforgettable safari.
The crossing takes place at the Isebania–Sirari border, where guests complete immigration and customs formalities before continuing towards Serengeti National Park.
East Africa Jungle coordinates the safari transport and border arrangements to make the journey as straightforward as possible.
Day 5: Crossing from Masai Mara to Serengeti
After an early breakfast at Mara Olodare Camp, depart Masai Mara and travel towards the Isebania border on the Kenyan side.
Upon arrival, complete the required departure procedures before entering Tanzania through Sirari. Depending on operational arrangements, guests may transfer to a Tanzanian safari vehicle and meet their local driver-guide.
Continue towards Serengeti National Park through the western access route, eventually reaching Seronera Public Campsite in the central Serengeti.
Important: This is a long travel day. Allow approximately 9–12 hours or longer, depending on road conditions, immigration procedures, park-entry formalities and traffic.
Kenya Entry Requirements – Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA)
Most international visitors travelling to Kenya must obtain an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation before departure, unless exempt under Kenya's immigration rules.
Travellers should:
Check whether their nationality requires a Kenya eTA.
Apply through the official Kenya eTA website.
Travel with a valid passport.
Keep copies of their travel authorisation and safari booking confirmation.
Allow sufficient time for application processing.
Official Kenya eTA Website: https://www.etakenya.go.ke/
Certain nationalities, including citizens of East African Community partner states, are exempt. Other exemptions may also apply.
Tanzania Tourist Visa Requirements
Travellers entering Tanzania from Kenya must meet Tanzania's immigration requirements.
Depending on nationality, visitors may require a tourist visa, qualify for visa-free entry or be eligible to obtain a visa on arrival.
For travellers requiring a visa, Tanzania offers an official online application system.
Official Tanzania eVisa Website: https://visa.immigration.go.tz/
Standard tourist visa fees currently include:
Ordinary Tourist Visa: USD 50 for eligible nationalities.
Multiple-Entry Visa for US Passport Holders: USD 100.
Visa categories, eligibility and fees should be checked before travelling.
Documents Required for the Kenya–Tanzania Border Crossing
Travellers should carry:
A passport with at least six months of remaining validity.
An approved Kenya eTA, if required for entry into Kenya.
A valid Tanzania visa or eVisa approval, where required.
A copy of the confirmed safari itinerary.
Accommodation and onward travel details.
Travel insurance documentation.
Yellow fever vaccination documentation, where required.
Yellow Fever Vaccination Requirements
Travellers entering Tanzania from Kenya should check the applicable yellow fever vaccination certificate requirements before departure.
Kenya is considered a yellow fever risk country for international travel-health purposes, and Tanzania may require proof of vaccination from travellers arriving from risk countries, subject to applicable exemptions.
Consult an authorised travel-health provider well before your safari, particularly if you have a medical exemption or are travelling with children.
Kenya–Tanzania Border Crossing Assistance
East Africa Jungle assists with the practical coordination of your cross-border safari, including:
Scheduling the departure from Masai Mara.
Coordinating the journey to Isebania–Sirari.
Arranging the Tanzania safari vehicle and guide handover, where applicable.
Providing itinerary and accommodation information needed for travel.
Coordinating onward transport towards Serengeti National Park.
Travellers remain responsible for obtaining the necessary passports, visas, travel authorisations and health documents before departure.
Important Travel Advice
Because immigration regulations can change, all travellers should verify their entry requirements before travelling in 2027 or 2028.
We recommend completing visa applications well in advance and carrying digital and printed copies of important travel documents.

Frequently Asked Questions About the 9 Days Kenya & Tanzania Budget Safari
1. How much does the 9 Days Kenya & Tanzania Budget Safari cost?
Our 9-day private Kenya and Tanzania budget safari starts from USD 2,100 per person, based on six adults travelling together. Prices are USD 3,150 per person for two travellers, USD 2,650 for three, USD 2,350 for four and USD 2,190 for five. The final quotation depends on your group size, travel dates and any requested upgrades.
2. Is this a private safari or a group-joining safari?
This is a private Kenya and Tanzania safari for 2–6 travellers. Your group travels in a dedicated 4×4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, accompanied by professional English-speaking safari driver-guides. You will not share your safari vehicle with unrelated travellers. Vehicle and guide changes may take place at the Kenya–Tanzania border.
3. What destinations are included in this 9-day safari?
The itinerary visits four major wildlife destinations: Lake Nakuru National Park, Masai Mara National Reserve, Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater. It includes one night in Nakuru, three nights in Masai Mara, three nights in central Serengeti and one night on the Ngorongoro Crater rim. The safari starts in Nairobi and ends in Arusha.
4. Can we see the Big Five during this Kenya and Tanzania safari?
Yes, the itinerary offers opportunities to see all five members of the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros. Lake Nakuru is particularly important for rhino viewing, while Masai Mara and Serengeti are famous for big cats. Ngorongoro Crater provides further opportunities to observe diverse wildlife. However, sightings cannot be guaranteed.
5. Will we see the Great Migration in Masai Mara or Serengeti?
The Great Migration can be experienced seasonally, depending on rainfall and wildebeest movements. July to October is generally popular for migration viewing in Masai Mara, while other months may favour different parts of the Serengeti ecosystem. This itinerary stays in central Serengeti, so dedicated Northern Serengeti river-crossing excursions or Ndutu calving experiences require a customised route.
6. What type of accommodation is included?
The safari includes eight nights of budget accommodation: one night at Buraha Zenoni Hotel in Nakuru, three nights at Mara Olodare Camp, three nights at Seronera Public Campsite and one night at Simba Public Campsite on the Ngorongoro Crater rim. Accommodation combines budget rooms, tented camping and public campsite facilities. Named properties are subject to availability.
7. Are park entrance fees, meals and game drives included?
The package is designed to include scheduled game drives, safari accommodation, meals specified in the itinerary and private safari transport. Park entrance fees, Ngorongoro Crater vehicle fees and camping charges should be explicitly confirmed in your final booking quotation. International flights, visas, personal expenses, tips and optional activities are excluded.
8. How do we cross from Kenya into Tanzania?
On Day 5, you travel from Masai Mara towards the Isebania–Sirari border. After completing immigration and customs procedures, you continue into Tanzania, potentially changing safari vehicles and driver-guides. The journey to central Serengeti is a long transfer day, and travel times depend on road conditions, border formalities and park-entry procedures.
9. Do we need separate visas for Kenya and Tanzania?
Entry requirements depend on your nationality. Many international visitors require an approved Kenya Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA), while Tanzania has separate visa or visa-exemption rules. Travellers should check both countries' official immigration websites before departure. A valid passport and yellow fever vaccination certificate may also be required, depending on travel circumstances.
10. Is this safari suitable for families with children?
Yes, this private safari can be customised for families with children. However, the itinerary includes long road transfers and four nights at public campsites in Tanzania, which may be challenging for younger children. Families can request suitable sleeping arrangements, shorter travel days or accommodation upgrades. Child prices and room arrangements are quoted according to the children's ages.
11. Can we customise the itinerary or upgrade the accommodation?
Yes. East Africa Jungle can customise the safari to suit your interests, travel dates and budget. Options include upgrading from public campsites to tented lodges, adding extra nights in Serengeti, arranging a Masai Mara balloon safari or extending your holiday to Zanzibar. Additional activities and accommodation changes are quoted separately.
12. How do we book, and what are the payment and cancellation terms?
To book, contact East Africa Jungle with your preferred travel dates, number of travellers and accommodation preferences. We will confirm availability and provide your safari quotation.
Our standard payment schedule is a 30% deposit to secure the booking, a further 30% payment 21 days before departure and the remaining balance before the safari begins, according to the confirmed booking agreement. Card payments may attract a 3.8% processing surcharge.
Cancellation and refund conditions depend on the confirmed booking terms and applicable supplier policies. Please review the cancellation policy provided with your quotation before making payment.
