Wildlife & Big Five Safari Experiences
Our 5-day Tanzania group safari explores three outstanding wildlife destinations: Tarangire National Park, Central Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater.
Each destination offers a different wildlife experience, from Tarangire's elephant herds and baobab landscapes to Serengeti's predators and Ngorongoro's concentrated wildlife populations.
Big Five Wildlife Viewing Opportunities
| Big Five Animal | Where You May See It |
|---|---|
| Lion | Central Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater |
| Elephant | Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro |
| Buffalo | Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro |
| Leopard | Central Serengeti, particularly wooded and riverine habitats |
| Black Rhinoceros | Ngorongoro Crater, although sightings are uncommon |
All wildlife sightings depend on natural animal movements, weather and conditions during game drives.
Great Migration Viewing in Central Serengeti
The Serengeti Great Migration is a year-round movement of wildebeest and zebras through the wider Serengeti–Mara ecosystem. Herd locations change according to seasonal rainfall and grazing conditions.
Our standard 5-day group safari focuses on Central Serengeti, with accommodation at Seronera Public Campsite.
During some months, migrating herds may pass through or near the Central Serengeti. However, the itinerary does not specifically follow the migration into the Western Corridor or Northern Serengeti.
Travellers should therefore consider this a year-round wildlife safari with possible Great Migration encounters, rather than a dedicated migration-tracking or Mara River crossing safari.
Wildlife Viewing During AFCON 2027
AFCON 2027 takes place from 19 June to 17 July, overlapping with Tanzania's dry-season wildlife-viewing period.
During June and July, migrating wildebeest and zebras may be moving through the Western Corridor or towards Northern Serengeti, depending on rainfall and grazing conditions.
Although large migration herds are not guaranteed in Central Serengeti during this period, the Seronera region remains an excellent area for viewing resident lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes and other wildlife.
Best Wildlife Experiences by Destination
Tarangire National Park
Tarangire is particularly known for elephants, baobab trees, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest and varied birdlife. Wildlife concentrations around the Tarangire River generally increase as the dry season progresses.
Central Serengeti National Park
The Seronera region supports resident predators and grazing animals throughout the year. Travellers may encounter lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, elephants, buffaloes, zebras and antelopes.
Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Crater offers opportunities to observe lions, buffaloes, elephants, hippos, flamingos and black rhinoceroses. Its varied habitats support abundant wildlife within a relatively compact area.
Can I See Mara River Crossings on This Safari?
The standard 5-day Tanzania group safari does not visit the Northern Serengeti Mara River crossing areas.
Travellers specifically interested in witnessing dramatic wildebeest river crossings should consider a dedicated Northern Serengeti migration safari, generally planned around July to October.
River crossings are unpredictable and cannot be guaranteed, even on specialized migration itineraries.
Best Time for This Tanzania Group Safari
Tarangire National Park, Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater offer rewarding wildlife viewing throughout the year. The best time to travel depends on seasonal rainfall, vegetation, animal movements and personal preferences.
June to October generally offers excellent dry-season game viewing, with wildlife increasingly gathering around permanent water sources. January to March brings greener landscapes and seasonal wildebeest calving in the Southern Serengeti, although that area is not included in this standard Central Serengeti itinerary.
Tanzania Safari Seasons 2027–2028
| Travel Period | Safari Conditions | Wildlife Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| January–March | Warm conditions with occasional rain | Resident wildlife and seasonal migration activity |
| April–May | Long rains and green landscapes | Birdlife, fewer visitors and lush scenery |
| June–July | Early dry season | Tarangire elephants and Serengeti predators |
| August–October | Generally dry conditions | Concentrated wildlife around water sources |
| November–December | Short rains and greener scenery | Resident wildlife and birdwatching |
Best Months for Wildlife Viewing
June–October: Excellent for general wildlife viewing, particularly elephants in Tarangire and resident predators in Central Serengeti.
January–March: Attractive for greener landscapes and year-round wildlife in Ngorongoro Crater and Central Serengeti.
April–May: Suitable for travellers who prefer quieter safari conditions and green scenery.
Important: The standard five-day itinerary explores Central Serengeti. Northern Serengeti Mara River crossings are not included.
Is June–July a Good Time for the Great Migration?
June and July are excellent months for general wildlife viewing in Northern Tanzania. However, the Great Migration herds may be moving through the Western Corridor or towards Northern Serengeti rather than remaining in Central Serengeti.
Our standard 5-day safari concentrates on Seronera, Tarangire and Ngorongoro. Travellers visiting during AFCON 2027 can enjoy excellent wildlife-viewing opportunities, but should not expect guaranteed Great Migration herds or Mara River crossings.
For travellers whose main priority is migration river crossings, East Africa Jungle recommends a dedicated Northern Serengeti itinerary with additional nights near the Mara River.
AFCON 2027 Safari Travel Planning
The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2027) is scheduled for 19 June to 17 July 2027, with Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda hosting the tournament.
Football supporters visiting East Africa can combine their match experience with a five-day Tanzania group safari departing from Arusha.
