4-Day Serengeti & Ngorongoro Group Safari Overview

This 4-day Serengeti & Ngorongoro group safari from Arusha is designed for travellers who want more time in the Serengeti while keeping the affordability of a shared safari. Instead of trying to cover several parks in four days, the itinerary focuses on two of northern Tanzania's most rewarding wildlife destinations.

Spend two nights in Central Serengeti, including a full day of game viewing, before continuing to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area for your final night. On Day 4, descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a morning game drive before returning to Arusha.

Travelling on a scheduled group departure allows solo travellers, couples and friends to share the safari vehicle and operating costs while following the same planned itinerary. The standard package includes budget public camping, shared 4×4 transport, meals, park and conservation fees, and guided game drives.

This safari is particularly suited to budget-conscious travellers who want a compact Tanzania safari without sacrificing valuable time in the Serengeti.

Detailed 4-Day Serengeti & Ngorongoro Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arusha → Serengeti National Park

Approx. Journey: 7–8 hours including stops and entry procedures | Main Activity: Transfer & en-route game viewing

Your 4-day Tanzania group shared safari begins in Arusha, where you will meet your driver-guide and fellow travellers before departing for Serengeti National Park. The journey takes you through the northern Tanzania highlands and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area before continuing toward the vast plains of the Serengeti.

Day 1 involves a significant amount of road travel, with the exact journey time depending on traffic, road conditions, stops and park-entry procedures. After entering the Serengeti, continue toward the Seronera area of Central Serengeti, one of the park's most productive year-round wildlife regions.

Depending on arrival time and road conditions, enjoy game viewing en route to your Central Serengeti campsite.

Route: Arusha → Ngorongoro Conservation Area → Serengeti
Accommodation: Seronera Public Campsite
Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Day 2: Full-Day Game Drive in Serengeti National Park

Safari Time: Full day | Main Activity: Serengeti wildlife game drives

After breakfast, spend a full day exploring Serengeti National Park, with your driver-guide selecting game-drive routes according to current wildlife activity, seasonal conditions and information from other guides.

Central Serengeti and the Seronera Valley are particularly well known for year-round resident wildlife. The area's rivers, grasslands and scattered acacia woodland support lions, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, gazelles and hippos. Cheetahs, leopards and hyenas are also possible, although all wildlife encounters occur naturally and cannot be guaranteed.

During migration periods, the location of larger wildebeest and zebra herds varies across the wider Serengeti ecosystem, so sightings depend on the season and prevailing wildlife movements.

Enjoy a picnic lunch during the day's game drive before continuing with afternoon wildlife viewing. Return to the Seronera area in the evening for dinner and your second overnight stay.

Accommodation: Seronera Public Campsite

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 3: Serengeti National Park → Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Main Activity: Morning/en-route game viewing & transfer | Overnight: Near the Ngorongoro Crater rim

After breakfast, continue game viewing in the Serengeti before beginning the journey toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Day 3 is not simply a transfer day. You continue game viewing as you travel through the Serengeti, with opportunities to stop when wildlife activity is encountered along the route.

Later, leave the Serengeti plains and continue toward the Ngorongoro highlands. The landscape changes noticeably as you approach the crater area, transitioning from open savannah to the cooler highlands surrounding the Ngorongoro Crater.

Arrive at Simba Public Campsite near the crater rim for dinner and overnight. Rest early in preparation for the following morning's descent into the Ngorongoro Crater.

Route: Serengeti → Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Accommodation: Simba Public Campsite
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater Game Drive → Arusha

Main Activity: Ngorongoro Crater game drive & return transfer | Safari Ends: Arusha

After an early breakfast, descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for the final major game drive of your Tanzania group safari.

Explore the crater floor's grasslands, woodland and wetlands, where resident wildlife is concentrated within a relatively compact area. Your guide will search for both plains game and predators, while black rhino sightings are possible but never guaranteed.

Enjoy a picnic lunch during the excursion before continuing your game drive, subject to the permitted crater-entry schedule.

Later, ascend from the crater and begin the drive back to Arusha. Arrival is generally expected in the late afternoon or early evening, depending on traffic, road conditions and the day's safari schedule.

Your 4-day Serengeti & Ngorongoro group shared safari ends on arrival in Arusha.

Route: Ngorongoro Crater → Arusha
Accommodation: None – safari ends in Arusha
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch

Accommodation During Your 4-Day Tanzania Safari

This 4-day Tanzania group shared safari includes three nights of budget camping accommodation: two nights in Serengeti National Park and one night in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Staying inside or close to the main wildlife areas helps maximise game-viewing time and supports an early start for each day's safari activities.

NightDestinationAccommodation
Night 1Serengeti National ParkSeronera Public Campsite
Night 2Serengeti National ParkSeronera Public Campsite
Night 3Ngorongoro Conservation AreaSimba Public Campsite

Seronera Public Campsite – 2 Nights

Located in Central Serengeti, Seronera Public Campsite provides a practical base for exploring the wildlife-rich Seronera area. Guests stay in safari tents and use shared campsite facilities, with meals prepared as part of the group camping safari.

Its central location gives your driver-guide good access to different game-drive routes and allows you to spend a full second day exploring Serengeti National Park.

Simba Public Campsite – 1 Night

Your third night is spent at Simba Public Campsite in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, near the Ngorongoro Crater rim.

The campsite's location is particularly convenient for an early descent into the Ngorongoro Crater on Day 4, allowing you to begin the final game drive before returning to Arusha.

What to Expect From Budget Camping

This safari uses public campsites inside the main wildlife areas, offering a simple and affordable way to stay close to the safari experience. The standard itinerary includes 2 nights at Seronera Public Campsite in Central Serengeti and 1 night at Simba Public Campsite near the Ngorongoro Crater rim.

Accommodation style: Budget public camping
Sleeping: Safari tents with camping equipment provided as confirmed at booking
Facilities: Shared campsite toilet and shower facilities
Meals: Safari meals are prepared during the trip and served according to the itinerary
Location: Campsites are positioned within or close to the main safari areas, reducing unnecessary transfers
Comfort level: Simple camping rather than lodge or permanent tented-camp accommodation
Weather: Nights can be cool, particularly at Simba Public Campsite near the Ngorongoro Crater rim

Public camping is best suited to travellers who prioritise wildlife, location and value over luxury accommodation. Facilities are basic compared with lodges and permanent tented camps, but staying within the safari areas allows you to remain close to the next day's game-drive routes.

Accommodation Note: Campsites are subject to availability and park regulations. If an operational change is necessary, a suitable alternative will be arranged within the safari route.

Serengeti Hot-Air Balloon Safari

A Serengeti balloon safari may be arranged as an optional experience, subject to availability and compatibility with the shared group itinerary. Balloon flights normally operate early in the morning and must therefore be confirmed in advance so that they can be coordinated with the day's safari schedule.

Private Safari Upgrade

Travellers who prefer greater flexibility can request a private 4×4 safari. A private safari allows more control over departure times, game-drive pacing and selected accommodation, making it suitable for families, couples and travellers who prefer not to share a vehicle.

Arusha Accommodation & Transfers

Airport transfers and accommodation in Arusha before or after the safari can also be arranged. This is particularly useful if your international or domestic flight schedule does not connect conveniently with the group's departure or return time.

Optional activities and upgrades are not included in the advertised group safari price and must be confirmed separately. Some upgrades may require converting the trip from a shared departure to a private safari.

How the Tanzania Group Joining Safari Works

This is a scheduled shared safari, meaning you travel with other guests following the same 4-day Serengeti and Ngorongoro itinerary. The vehicle, driver-guide and daily safari schedule are shared by the group.

Group Size & Safari Vehicle

Group joining safaris generally operate with up to 6–7 travellers per 4×4 safari vehicle. The vehicle has a pop-up roof for wildlife viewing and photography, with seating shared among the participating travellers.

Scheduled Departures

This 4-day Serengeti & Ngorongoro group safari is scheduled to depart from Arusha every Monday, Friday and Saturday, subject to seat availability and operational confirmation.

Solo travellers, couples and small parties can book available seats without needing to form their own group.

Your booking confirmation will provide the exact departure date, Arusha meeting point and reporting time.

Because this is a shared safari, departure times, game drives and transfers are coordinated for the whole group. Travellers requiring different dates or a more flexible schedule can request a private safari.

Pickup & Drop-Off in Arusha

The safari starts and ends in Arusha, Tanzania. Your booking confirmation will specify the designated hotel or meeting point and departure time.

Airport transfers and additional accommodation in Arusha can be arranged separately if required.

Shared Game-Drive Schedule

Your professional driver-guide manages the game-drive route according to the planned itinerary, current wildlife activity, road conditions and available time.

Because the vehicle is shared, individual travellers cannot independently change the group's departure times or game-drive schedule.

Luggage

Space in a shared safari vehicle is limited, so soft-sided luggage and light packing are recommended. Large hard-shell suitcases can usually be left at your Arusha hotel or stored by prior arrangement.

Prefer more flexibility? Travellers wanting an exclusive vehicle, customised departure times, different accommodation or greater control over game-drive schedules should request a private safari instead.

Wildlife You May See in Serengeti & Ngorongoro

Serengeti: Lions, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest and gazelles are among the commonly encountered species. Cheetahs, leopards, hyenas and other predators are also possible depending on location and conditions.

Ngorongoro Crater: Expect strong opportunities for plains game, buffaloes, hippos, lions and hyenas. Black rhinos occur in the crater but sightings are never guaranteed.

Great Migration: Migration herd locations change throughout the year according to rainfall and grazing conditions. This fixed Central Serengeti itinerary does not guarantee Great Migration sightings.

Best Time for This Serengeti & Ngorongoro Safari

This 4-day Serengeti and Ngorongoro group safari can be enjoyed throughout the year. Central Serengeti has resident wildlife year-round, while conditions, landscapes and the location of the Great Migration herds change with the seasons.

PeriodWhat to Expect
January–MarchGreen landscapes, good general wildlife viewing and the wider Serengeti ecosystem's calving period, particularly toward the southern Serengeti and Ndutu region.
April–MayMain rainy season, greener scenery, fewer visitors and potentially muddy road conditions.
June–OctoberDrier conditions, strong general game viewing and increasingly concentrated wildlife around water sources.
November–DecemberShort rains bring greener landscapes, returning migratory movements and good resident wildlife viewing.

Great Migration Note: The migration moves across the wider Serengeti ecosystem throughout the year. Its location depends on rainfall and grazing conditions, so migration sightings cannot be guaranteed on this fixed four-day itinerary.

Practical Information for Your Tanzania Group Safari

What to Pack

Pack light and use a soft-sided travel bag rather than a large hard-shell suitcase. Useful items include lightweight neutral-coloured clothing, comfortable closed shoes, a warm jacket or fleece, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, personal toiletries, camera and binoculars.

Temperatures can be cool during early mornings and evenings, particularly around the Ngorongoro highlands, so bring at least one warm layer.

Road Conditions & Driving Time

This is a road-based safari, and some days involve substantial driving. Roads inside the national parks and conservation areas are mostly unpaved and can be dusty during dry periods or muddy following heavy rain.

Day 1 from Arusha to Serengeti is a long travel day. The changing landscapes and game viewing after entering the wildlife areas form part of the safari experience.

Meals & Drinking Water

Meals are provided according to the itinerary, generally including breakfast, picnic or packed lunch and dinner while on safari. Drinking water is carried in the safari vehicle.

Advise us in advance of any dietary requirements or food allergies so appropriate arrangements can be requested.

Weather & Clothing

Tanzania's safari areas can experience warm daytime temperatures but considerably cooler mornings and evenings. Ngorongoro is at a higher elevation than the Serengeti plains and can feel particularly cold at night and early in the morning.

Layered clothing is therefore more practical than relying only on warm-weather clothing.

Camping Conditions

This itinerary uses public campsites, so travellers should expect a simple outdoor safari experience with shared facilities rather than lodge-style accommodation. Public camping brings you closer to the safari environment but offers fewer comforts than permanent tented camps and lodges.

Tipping

Tips are not included in the safari price. Gratuities for your driver-guide and safari crew are voluntary and should reflect your satisfaction with the service provided.

Money & Personal Expenses

Carry some cash for tips, drinks, souvenirs and other personal expenses. Optional activities and services should be confirmed separately before assuming they are included.

Travel Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance is recommended for all travellers. Your policy should provide appropriate cover for medical emergencies, trip interruption, baggage and other circumstances relevant to your journey.

Photography & Charging

Bring spare batteries, memory cards and a power bank where possible. Charging opportunities may be more limited on a camping safari than at permanent lodges.

Practical Tip: Avoid scheduling a tight flight connection immediately after your expected return to Arusha. Road, weather and wildlife conditions can affect the exact arrival time.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What time does the safari leave Arusha on Day 1?

The exact meeting and departure time is confirmed with your booking. An early departure is recommended because the journey from Arusha to Central Serengeti is a long road transfer and includes travel through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

2. How much driving should I expect during this 4-day safari?

This is a road-based safari, so travellers should expect substantial driving, particularly between Arusha and Serengeti on Day 1. Travel times can vary with road conditions, traffic, park-entry procedures and stops along the route.

3. What should I pack for a Tanzania camping safari?

Pack light and use a soft-sided travel bag where possible. Useful items include comfortable safari clothing, closed shoes, a warm jacket or fleece for cool evenings, sunscreen, a hat, insect repellent, personal toiletries, binoculars, a camera and a power bank.

4. Are meals and drinking water provided during the safari?

Yes. Meals are provided according to the itinerary, including breakfast, lunch and dinner where specified. Drinking water is also provided during safari activities. Please advise us in advance of any dietary requirements or food allergies.

5. What are the camping conditions in Serengeti and Ngorongoro?

This safari uses public campsites and is designed as a budget camping experience rather than a lodge safari. Travellers should expect safari tents and shared campsite facilities, with cooler nighttime temperatures particularly around the Ngorongoro highlands.

6. Can I join the safari if I arrive in Arusha the same morning?

We generally recommend arriving in Arusha at least one day before your safari. This reduces the risk of a flight delay affecting your scheduled group departure and allows you to begin the safari rested.

7. Can you arrange an Arusha hotel and airport transfer before or after the safari?

Yes. Airport transfers and pre- or post-safari accommodation in Arusha can be arranged separately. These services are not included in the standard USD 895 group safari price unless specifically stated in your quotation.

8. How much luggage can I bring on the shared safari vehicle?

Luggage space is limited on shared safari vehicles, so we recommend travelling with a soft-sided bag and packing only what you need for the four-day safari. Large hard-shell suitcases can often be stored in Arusha by prior arrangement.

9. Can I take a Serengeti hot-air balloon safari during this itinerary?

A Serengeti balloon safari may be possible, but it must be arranged in advance and coordinated with the shared group's itinerary. Because balloon flights operate early in the morning, availability and compatibility with your scheduled departure must be confirmed before booking.

10. Should I book a flight immediately after returning to Arusha on Day 4?

We do not recommend scheduling a tight flight connection immediately after the safari. Return time to Arusha can vary because of road conditions, traffic, weather and the day's safari schedule, so allowing sufficient time before an onward flight is advisable.

Traveller Reviews – Tanzania Group Joining Safari

★★★★★ Daniel M. – United Kingdom

Travel Date: August 2025
Safari Type: 4-Day Serengeti & Ngorongoro Group Joining Safari
Travel Style: Solo Traveller

Joining the group safari was a great option as a solo traveller. The group was small and friendly, and sharing the vehicle made the safari much more affordable. We had two nights in the Serengeti with plenty of game-viewing time before continuing to Ngorongoro. Our guide was knowledgeable and worked hard to find wildlife throughout the trip.

★★★★★ Laura & Miguel – Spain

Travel Date: July 2025
Safari Type: Serengeti & Ngorongoro Shared Camping Safari
Travel Style: Couple

We chose the shared safari because we wanted to experience Serengeti and Ngorongoro without the higher cost of a private vehicle. Travelling with the other guests was enjoyable, and the camping experience made the trip feel like a real adventure. The Serengeti game drives were a highlight, and finishing with the Ngorongoro Crater was a fantastic end to the safari.

The group joining arrangement was very easy. I booked one seat and joined other travellers in Arusha, so I didn't need to organise my own group. The vehicle had a pop-up roof with good views during the game drives, and our guide made sure everyone had opportunities for photographs and wildlife viewing. Camping in the Serengeti was one of my favourite experiences.

Four days worked very well for our schedule. We had two nights in Serengeti, continued to Ngorongoro and then returned to Arusha. There is quite a lot of driving, especially on the first day, but the wildlife and landscapes made the journey worthwhile. Sharing the safari with other travellers also made it good value for the experience.
