3 Days Serengeti & Ngorongoro Group Safari Overview

Our 3 Days Serengeti & Ngorongoro Group Safari from Arusha combines two of northern Tanzania's most celebrated wildlife destinations in a compact shared safari. It is designed for solo travellers, couples and friends who want to experience the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater while sharing the safari vehicle and operating costs with other travellers.

Travel from Arusha through the Ngorongoro highlands to Central Serengeti, where shared game drives explore the open plains and wildlife-rich Seronera area. After further wildlife viewing on Day 2, continue to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area for an overnight stay close to the crater.

On Day 3, descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a final game drive before returning to Arusha. The crater provides a contrasting safari environment, with wildlife concentrated across grassland, wetland and woodland habitats.

Throughout the safari, you travel in a shared 4×4 Land Cruiser with a professional driver-guide and stay in comfortable mid-range lodge accommodation.

This is a relatively fast-paced road safari, making it best suited to travellers with limited time who want to combine two highlights of Tanzania's Northern Safari Circuit at a lower shared-group cost.

Why Choose This Serengeti & Ngorongoro Group Safari?

This 3-day group joining safari is designed for travellers who want to experience Serengeti and Ngorongoro with the cost advantage of shared safari transport while staying in comfortable mid-range lodge accommodation.

Scheduled Group Departures

Join from Arusha every Monday, Friday and Saturday, subject to seat availability. You can book an individual seat without organising your own group.

Lodge-Based Safari

Solo-Traveller Friendly

Solo travellers can join an existing scheduled departure, making the safari practical for those travelling alone without having to book an entire private vehicle.

Shared 4×4 Land Cruiser

Travel with other safari guests in a shared 4×4 Land Cruiser, allowing the vehicle and driver-guide costs to be shared while retaining a dedicated safari game-viewing experience.

Detailed 3-Day Serengeti & Ngorongoro Group Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arusha → Serengeti National Park

Approx. Road Time: 6–7 hours, excluding extended stops and game viewing
Route: Arusha → Ngorongoro Highlands → Central Serengeti
Main Experience: Scenic transfer & Serengeti game drive
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Seronera Wildlife Lodge or similar, Central Serengeti
Safari Level: Mid-Range

Your 3 Days Serengeti & Ngorongoro Group Safari begins in Arusha, where you meet your professional safari driver-guide and fellow travellers before departing in a shared 4×4 Land Cruiser.

Travel west through the landscapes of northern Tanzania and the Ngorongoro highlands before continuing towards Serengeti National Park. The journey from Arusha to Central Serengeti takes approximately 6–7 hours, excluding extended stops, park formalities and wildlife viewing along the way.

After entering Serengeti National Park, continue towards the Seronera area of Central Serengeti. Wildlife viewing begins as you travel through the park, with opportunities to encounter zebras, wildebeest, giraffes, buffaloes, elephants, gazelles and other plains wildlife. Predators including lions, cheetahs, hyenas and leopards are also present, although individual sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Continue with game viewing as daylight and road conditions allow before arriving at Seronera Wildlife Lodge or similar for dinner and overnight.

Staying in Central Serengeti provides a convenient base for the following morning's game drive without requiring unnecessary travel outside the main safari area.

Day 2: Serengeti National Park → Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Approx. Road Time: 3–4 hours from Central Serengeti to the Ngorongoro area, excluding game viewing and stops
Route: Central Serengeti → Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Main Experience: Serengeti game drive & scenic transfer to Ngorongoro
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Rhino Lodge or similar, Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Safari Level: Mid-Range

After breakfast, continue your safari with a morning game drive in Central Serengeti. The Seronera area supports excellent resident wildlife throughout the year, giving you further opportunities to search for lions, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, wildebeest, zebras, cheetahs and other wildlife.

The Great Migration moves through different parts of the Serengeti ecosystem according to seasonal rainfall, grazing conditions and natural herd movements. Migration sightings therefore depend on your travel dates and the location of the herds and cannot be guaranteed on this fixed three-day itinerary.

After further wildlife viewing, begin the journey towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The road journey from Central Serengeti to the Ngorongoro area generally takes approximately 3–4 hours, excluding game-viewing stops, park procedures and other stops along the route.

Enjoy the changing scenery as you leave the open Serengeti plains and travel towards the higher landscapes surrounding Ngorongoro.

Arrive at Rhino Lodge or similar later in the day. Its location within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area provides a practical base for an early start and crater descent the following morning.

Settle into your accommodation, enjoy dinner and prepare for the final day's Ngorongoro Crater safari.

Day 3: Ngorongoro Crater Game Drive → Arusha

Approx. Road Time: 3–4 hours from the Ngorongoro area to Arusha after the crater safari
Route: Ngorongoro Crater → Arusha
Main Experience: Ngorongoro Crater game drive & return to Arusha
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
End Point: Arusha

After an early breakfast at Rhino Lodge or similar, depart for the Ngorongoro Crater and descend to the crater floor for the final major wildlife experience of your 3-day Tanzania group safari.

Explore the crater's grasslands, wetlands and woodland habitats in your shared 4×4 Land Cruiser. Ngorongoro supports a high concentration of wildlife within a relatively compact area, making it one of the highlights of Tanzania's Northern Safari Circuit.

During your game drive, you may encounter wildebeest, zebras, buffaloes, gazelles, hippos, warthogs, lions and other wildlife. Elephants can also be encountered within the wider Ngorongoro ecosystem. The endangered black rhino is present in the crater, although sightings are uncommon and cannot be guaranteed.

Enjoy a picnic lunch at a designated site before completing your crater game drive and ascending from the crater floor.

After the crater safari, begin the approximately 3–4 hour road journey back to Arusha, travelling through the highlands and towns of northern Tanzania.

Arrival in Arusha is generally expected in the late afternoon or early evening, depending on traffic, road conditions, park procedures and the day's safari schedule.

Your 3 Days Serengeti & Ngorongoro Group Safari concludes upon arrival in Arusha.

Accommodation on Your 3-Day Serengeti & Ngorongoro Group Safari

This safari uses comfortable mid-range lodge accommodation selected for its location along the Arusha–Serengeti–Ngorongoro route. Both nights are planned to reduce unnecessary backtracking and position the group conveniently for the following day's wildlife experience.

NightSafari AreaAccommodationRoom BasisMeal PlanSafari Level
Night 1Central Serengeti – SeroneraSeronera Wildlife Lodge or similarStandard Double/TwinFull BoardMid-Range
Night 2Ngorongoro Conservation AreaRhino Lodge or similarStandard Double/TwinFull BoardMid-Range

Night 1 – Seronera Wildlife Lodge, Central Serengeti

Seronera Wildlife Lodge provides a practical mid-range base inside Central Serengeti, allowing the group to stay close to the main wildlife-viewing areas rather than travelling outside the park after the Day 1 game drive.

Its Central Serengeti location works particularly well for this short itinerary because you can resume wildlife viewing the following morning before continuing towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Accommodation: Seronera Wildlife Lodge or similar
Location: Central Serengeti – Seronera
Room: Standard Double/Twin
Meal Plan: Full Board
Safari Level: Mid-Range

Night 2 – Rhino Lodge, Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Rhino Lodge is located close to the Ngorongoro Crater rim and provides convenient access for the final day's crater safari. Its location makes it particularly suitable for this three-day itinerary because the group can start early and reach the crater descent road without the longer morning transfer required from accommodation farther away in Karatu.

The lodge offers comfortable en-suite rooms in a simple, rustic safari setting surrounded by the Ngorongoro highland forest.

Accommodation: Rhino Lodge or similar
Location: Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Room: Standard Double/Twin
Meal Plan: Full Board
Safari Level: Mid-Range

Why We Use These Locations

With only three safari days available, location matters as much as accommodation category. Staying in Central Serengeti on Night 1 keeps you close to the Serengeti game-viewing areas, while staying near the Ngorongoro Crater on Night 2 positions you for an early crater descent on Day 3.

This helps maximise wildlife-viewing time while keeping the Arusha → Serengeti → Ngorongoro → Arusha route practical.

Room Arrangements

The advertised safari price is based on two travellers sharing a standard twin or double room. Triple rooms may be available for three travellers sharing, subject to the accommodation's room configuration and availability.

Solo travellers can join the scheduled group departure independently. A single-room supplement may apply when private room occupancy is required.

Accommodation Availability

Seronera Wildlife Lodge and Rhino Lodge are the preferred accommodation for this safari, subject to availability. If either property is unavailable for your travel dates, we may confirm a similar mid-range lodge or tented camp in the same general safari area.

Your final accommodation will always be stated in your safari quotation and booking confirmation before payment.

3 Days Serengeti & Ngorongoro Group Safari Price

How the Group Joining Safari Works

This 3-day Serengeti & Ngorongoro safari operates as a scheduled group joining safari from Arusha. Solo travellers, couples and small groups can reserve individual seats and share the safari vehicle, guide and operating costs with other confirmed travellers.

Scheduled Group Departures

Departure Days: Monday, Friday & Saturday
Start & End Point: Arusha, Tanzania
Safari Type: Group Joining / Shared Safari
Vehicle: Shared 4×4 Land Cruiser with pop-up roof
Group Size: Maximum 6–7 travellers per 4×4 Land Cruiser.
Solo Travellers: Individual seats available
Advance Booking: Recommended, especially from June–October and December–February

You do not need to form your own group. Simply book one or more available seats for a scheduled departure, and we will combine you with other confirmed travellers travelling on the same safari.

Departure is from Arusha on the morning of Day 1. Your exact pickup point and departure time will be confirmed in your booking documents before the safari.

Shared 4×4 Safari Vehicle

You travel with other confirmed guests in a safari-equipped 4×4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof for wildlife viewing and photography. The vehicle, driver-guide and game drives are shared throughout the group safari.

Joining as a Solo Traveller or Couple

You do not need to organise your own group. Solo travellers and couples can reserve available seats on one of our scheduled departures.

Accommodation is based on the room arrangement confirmed at booking. Solo travellers should check whether a single-room supplement applies if they require private accommodation.

Group Size

Each vehicle carries a maximum of 6–7 safari guests, depending on the vehicle assigned to the departure. Limiting the group size helps provide appropriate seating and wildlife-viewing space during game drives.

Pickup in Arusha

The safari starts in Arusha on Day 1. Your exact hotel pickup or meeting point and departure time will be confirmed before departure.

Because this is a scheduled shared safari, guests should be ready at the confirmed pickup time to avoid delaying other travellers.

Shared Game Drives

Game drives are shared with the other travellers in your vehicle. Your professional driver-guide selects the most appropriate routes based on wildlife activity, road conditions, available time and the day's itinerary.

Luggage

Space in a shared safari vehicle is limited, so we recommend soft-sided luggage rather than large hard-shell suitcases. Additional luggage that is not required during the safari can usually be stored in Arusha by prior arrangement.

Prefer More Flexibility?

If you would prefer exclusive use of the safari vehicle, more control over game-drive timings or a customised itinerary, ask us about upgrading this itinerary to a private Serengeti & Ngorongoro safari.

Wildlife You May See

This 3-day Serengeti & Ngorongoro safari combines two different ecosystems, providing opportunities to see a wide variety of East African wildlife.

Wildlife in Serengeti National Park

Central Serengeti supports excellent resident wildlife throughout the year. Depending on the season and game-drive route, you may encounter:

Lions • Elephants • Giraffes • Buffaloes • Zebras • Wildebeest • Gazelles • Hippos • Hyenas • Cheetahs • Leopards

The wider Serengeti ecosystem also supports the Great Migration, although the location of the herds changes throughout the year according to rainfall and grazing conditions.

Wildlife in Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro's relatively compact crater floor supports a high concentration of wildlife, with frequent opportunities to see wildebeest, zebras, buffaloes, hippos, gazelles, warthogs and lions.

The crater is also one of the areas in northern Tanzania where the endangered black rhino may be encountered, although sightings are uncommon and cannot be guaranteed.

Wildlife note: All animals live freely in natural ecosystems. Specific wildlife sightings, predator encounters and Great Migration experiences cannot be guaranteed.

Best Time for Serengeti & Ngorongoro

The Serengeti and Ngorongoro can be visited throughout the year, making this 3-day group safari suitable for departures in different seasons. However, landscapes, weather, visitor numbers and wildlife movements change throughout the year.

January–March: calving period in the southern Serengeti/Ndutu ecosystem; your standard Central Serengeti route does not specifically visit Ndutu.

April–May: greener landscapes, seasonal rains and generally fewer visitors.

June–October: drier conditions, strong general wildlife viewing and higher visitor numbers.

November–December: short rains, greener landscapes and continued seasonal movement of the migration.

What About the Great Migration?

The Great Wildebeest Migration is a year-round natural movement, not a single event in one fixed location. The herds move through the Serengeti ecosystem according to rainfall and grazing conditions.

If witnessing a particular migration stage—such as calving or river crossings—is a priority, ask about the most appropriate safari route and travel dates before booking.

Serengeti & Ngorongoro: What to Expect

Although they are combined in one short safari, Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater offer very different wildlife experiences

Serengeti — Space & Longer Game Drives

The Serengeti offers vast landscapes where wildlife viewing involves covering larger distances across open plains and varied habitats. On this short safari, your game drives focus primarily on Central Serengeti.

Ngorongoro — Concentrated Crater Safari

Ngorongoro provides a very different experience. Your Land Cruiser descends from the crater rim to the crater floor, where several habitats and a high concentration of wildlife occur within a relatively compact area.

Why Combine Them?

Serengeti provides the classic expansive savannah experience, while Ngorongoro offers concentrated wildlife viewing within a dramatic volcanic landscape. Combining both gives first-time visitors two distinctly different safari experiences in three days.

Group Joining vs Private Serengeti Safari

Not sure whether to choose a group joining or private safari? Both options follow a similar Serengeti and Ngorongoro route, but the main difference is how the safari vehicle, departure schedule and game-drive experience are arranged.

Which Safari Should You Choose?

Choose the group joining safari if you want to share safari vehicle costs, meet other travellers and follow a scheduled itinerary while staying in mid-range lodge accommodation.

Choose a private safari if you prefer an exclusive safari vehicle, more flexibility with game-drive timing and an itinerary arranged around your own travelling party.

Practical Safari Information

Safari Start & End Point

This 3 Days Serengeti and Ngorongoro Group Safari starts and ends in Arusha, Tanzania. Your confirmed meeting point and departure time will be provided before the safari.

We recommend staying in Arusha the night before departure, particularly if you are arriving on an international flight.

Transport & Safari Vehicle

The safari operates in a shared 4×4 safari vehicle with a pop-up roof suitable for wildlife viewing and photography. Because this is a group joining safari, the vehicle and guide are shared with other confirmed travellers.

Road Travel

This is a road-based safari covering significant distances between Arusha, Serengeti and Ngorongoro. Some sections can be long, dusty or bumpy, particularly on unpaved roads.

Travel times vary according to traffic, road conditions, park entry procedures, weather and wildlife encountered along the route.

Luggage

Pack light and use a soft-sided travel bag where possible. Large hard-shell suitcases can be difficult to accommodate in a shared safari vehicle.

If you have additional luggage that you do not need during the safari, ask us about storage arrangements in Arusha before departure.

Clothing

Lightweight, comfortable clothing in neutral colours works well for daytime game drives. Mornings and evenings can be cool, particularly around the Ngorongoro highlands, so bring a warm layer or light jacket.

Comfortable closed shoes, a hat, sunglasses and sun protection are also recommended.

Photography & Binoculars

Bring your camera, spare batteries, memory cards and charging equipment. Binoculars are useful for observing distant wildlife and birds.

A dust-resistant camera bag or protective cover can be helpful during dry conditions.

Meals & Drinking Water

Meals during the safari are provided according to the confirmed itinerary and accommodation meal plan. Drinking water is provided during safari drives.

Please advise us in advance about vegetarian, vegan, allergy-related or other dietary requirements so arrangements can be requested from the accommodation providers.

Money & Tipping

Carry some cash for tips, drinks, souvenirs and personal expenses. Tipping safari guides and lodge/camp staff is customary but remains discretionary.

Travel Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance is recommended. Your policy should provide suitable cover for medical emergencies, trip interruption or cancellation, baggage and the safari activities included in your journey.

Health & Entry Requirements

Travellers are responsible for checking the latest Tanzania entry, visa, vaccination and health requirements applicable to their nationality and travel history before departure.

A Great Group Safari Experience

Daniel & Sophie M. – United Kingdom
Travel Month: August 2025
Group Type: Couple – Group Joining Safari
Safari Highlights: Serengeti wildlife, lions & Ngorongoro Crater

“The three-day safari was a great way to experience both Serengeti and Ngorongoro with the time we had available. We joined other travellers in the safari vehicle and the group atmosphere was friendly throughout the trip. Our guide was knowledgeable and worked hard to find wildlife in the Serengeti. Ngorongoro Crater on the final day was another highlight. Everything from the game drives to the accommodation was well organised.”

Perfect for a Solo Traveller

Emma R. – Australia
Travel Month: July 2025
Group Type: Solo Traveller – Group Joining Safari
Safari Highlights: Serengeti game drives, elephants, lions & crater scenery

“I was travelling alone and wanted to join a group rather than book a private safari. The process was straightforward and I quickly felt comfortable with the other travellers. We saw plenty of wildlife in the Serengeti, and the drive into Ngorongoro Crater was one of my favourite moments. It is a busy three-day itinerary, but a very good option if you only have a few days available.”

“We chose the group safari because we wanted to keep the trip affordable while still visiting Serengeti and Ngorongoro. The vehicle was comfortable for the safari and our guide explained a lot about the animals and the different areas we travelled through. We especially enjoyed the Serengeti game drives and the scenery around Ngorongoro. Three days went quickly, but we came away with some wonderful memories.”

Safari Highlights: Serengeti plains, predators & Ngorongoro wildlife

“Our safari started smoothly from Arusha and everything was clearly explained before departure. The Serengeti was beautiful and we were fortunate to see lions, giraffes, wildebeest and many other animals. Ngorongoro was completely different from the Serengeti and made a fantastic final day. Our guide was professional and patient, especially when we wanted extra time for photographs.”

Excellent Short Tanzania Safari

Lucas & Maria P. – Spain
Travel Month: January 2026
Group Type: Couple – Group Joining Safari
Safari Highlights: Wildlife photography, Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater

“We had limited time in Tanzania, so this three-day group safari worked very well for our schedule. There is quite a lot of driving, but the wildlife and landscapes made the journey worthwhile. Sharing the vehicle also gave us the chance to meet travellers from different countries. The Serengeti was our favourite part, although the Ngorongoro Crater game drive was an excellent way to finish the safari.”
