2 Days Tarangire & Ngorongoro Group Safari Overview

This 2-day Tarangire and Ngorongoro group safari from Arusha combines two of northern Tanzania’s best-known wildlife areas in a compact itinerary. The safari starts and ends in Arusha, with a game drive in Tarangire National Park on Day 1, an overnight stay in the Karatu / Ngorongoro area, and a Ngorongoro Crater game drive on Day 2.

Tarangire offers a classic northern Tanzania safari landscape of baobab woodland, open savannah and the Tarangire River, while Ngorongoro provides a very different game-viewing environment within the crater. Combining the two allows you to experience contrasting landscapes and wildlife habitats without extending the itinerary to the Serengeti.

This safari operates as a group joining safari in a shared 4×4 safari vehicle with a pop-up roof, typically carrying up to 6–7 travellers following the same scheduled itinerary. Sharing the vehicle and operating costs helps keep the safari more affordable than booking the same route privately.

The itinerary is particularly suitable for solo travellers, couples, friends and travellers with limited time in northern Tanzania, including those adding a short mainland safari before or after Zanzibar or another Tanzania itinerary.

Travellers who want to include the Serengeti should consider extending their safari to at least 3–5 days for a more practical Northern Tanzania itinerary.

Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 – Arusha → Tarangire National Park → Karatu

Your 2-day Tarangire and Ngorongoro group safari begins with an early-morning pickup in Arusha, generally between 06:30 and 07:30, from the designated meeting point or selected Arusha hotels. Your exact pickup time and location will be confirmed before departure.

After meeting your safari guide and fellow travellers and receiving a short safari briefing, depart Arusha in a shared 4×4 safari vehicle with a pop-up roof and travel toward Tarangire National Park.

On arrival, enter Tarangire National Park and begin your first game drive. Tarangire is particularly known for its impressive baobab trees, varied landscapes and large elephant population. As you explore the park, your guide will search for wildlife that may include elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, impalas, warthogs and buffalo. Predators such as lions and leopards are also present, although all wildlife sightings are naturally unpredictable.

The Tarangire River and surrounding habitats attract a wide variety of animals, particularly during the drier months when water becomes increasingly important. Your guide will use local knowledge and current wildlife movements to choose suitable game-viewing areas.

Around midday, stop at a designated picnic area for lunch, followed by further game viewing during the afternoon. The open roof of your safari vehicle provides excellent opportunities for observing and photographing wildlife as you travel through the park.

Later in the afternoon, leave Tarangire and drive toward Karatu and the Ngorongoro Highlands. On arrival at your accommodation, check in and enjoy time to relax before dinner.

Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Karatu / Ngorongoro area
Safari Experience: Tarangire National Park game drive

Day 2 – Ngorongoro Crater Game Drive → Arusha

After an early breakfast, depart your accommodation and travel toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area for the second major wildlife experience of your Tanzania group safari. After completing the necessary entry formalities, continue toward the crater rim before descending approximately 600 metres to the Ngorongoro Crater floor.

Spend the morning exploring the crater in your shared 4×4 safari vehicle. The varied habitats—including open grasslands, wetlands, woodland and freshwater areas—support an impressive diversity of wildlife.

During your Ngorongoro Crater game drive, you may encounter wildebeest, zebras, buffalo, hippos, warthogs, gazelles and other plains animals. Lions and spotted hyenas are among the predators commonly associated with the crater ecosystem. Ngorongoro is also one of the areas in northern Tanzania where visitors have an opportunity to look for the endangered black rhino, although sightings can never be guaranteed.

Your guide will explore different parts of the crater according to wildlife activity and conditions on the day. Around midday, enjoy a picnic lunch at a designated site before continuing with further game viewing.

In the afternoon, begin your ascent from the crater floor and leave the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. You will then drive back toward Arusha, marking the end of your 2 Days Tarangire & Ngorongoro Group Safari.

Arrival time in Arusha can vary depending on traffic, road conditions and the day's game-viewing schedule, so travellers should avoid arranging tight onward connections immediately after the safari.

Why Visit Tarangire National Park on This 2-Day Safari?

Tarangire National Park is an ideal first stop on this short northern Tanzania safari because it is easily reached from Arusha and offers rewarding wildlife viewing without requiring a long transfer to the Serengeti.

The park is particularly known for its large elephant populations, distinctive baobab-dotted landscapes and the Tarangire River, which attracts wildlife during the drier months. Depending on the season and wildlife movements, you may also encounter giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, antelopes and predators such as lions.

After your game drive, continuing to the Karatu area positions the group conveniently for an early start at Ngorongoro the following morning. This makes Tarangire a practical as well as wildlife-rich choice for a compact 2-day itinerary.

Planning a longer visit? Explore our complete Tarangire National Park guide for the best time to visit, wildlife, accommodation and travel information.

Why Visit Ngorongoro Crater on This 2-Day Safari?

Ngorongoro Crater complements Tarangire by offering a very different safari environment on the second day. After an early departure from Karatu, the group enters the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and descends to the crater floor for a concentrated game-viewing experience.

The crater supports a diverse resident wildlife population, with opportunities to see animals such as wildebeest, zebras, buffalo, hippos, elephants, lions and several antelope species. Black rhinos are also present, although sightings are never guaranteed.

Its location near Karatu makes Ngorongoro particularly suitable for the second day of a short safari. You can enjoy a substantial morning and early-afternoon game drive before ascending the crater and travelling back to Arusha, avoiding the additional driving time required for a Serengeti extension.

Group Joining Safari – How It Works

Our 2 Days Tarangire & Ngorongoro Group Safari from Arusha operates as a shared safari, meaning you travel with other guests booked on the same scheduled departure.

Meeting Point & Pickup in Arusha

Guests meet at a designated location in Arusha on the morning of departure. Your exact meeting point and pickup instructions are provided with your final safari confirmation.

Where operationally possible, pickup from selected Arusha hotels may be arranged or included. Guests staying outside the normal pickup area may require an additional transfer.

Approximate Morning Pickup

Approximate pickup: 06:30–07:30 from the designated Arusha meeting point or selected Arusha hotels.

Because this is a group joining safari, several guests may be collected before the vehicle leaves Arusha for Tarangire National Park. Your exact pickup time and meeting location will be confirmed before departure, and guests should be ready at the confirmed time to avoid delaying the group.

Group Size & Safari Vehicle

The safari normally operates with a maximum of approximately 6–7 passengers per 4×4 safari vehicle. Vehicles have a pop-up roof for wildlife viewing and photography.

Seat Arrangements

Seats are shared among group members. Specific permanent window seats or seating positions cannot normally be guaranteed throughout the safari.

Luggage

Because luggage space in safari vehicles is limited, we recommend travelling with a soft-sided safari bag rather than a large hard-shell suitcase. Excess luggage can usually be stored in Arusha by prior arrangement.

Scheduled Group Departures

This 2-day Tarangire & Ngorongoro group joining safari is scheduled to depart from Arusha on Monday, Friday and Saturday, subject to availability and confirmed group operation.

Travelling on another day? Additional departure dates may be available when a group is confirmed, or the same itinerary can be arranged as a private safari.

We recommend checking availability in advance, particularly during peak travel periods.

Best Time for Tarangire & Ngorongoro

This Tarangire and Ngorongoro group safari can be enjoyed throughout the year, with each season offering different landscapes and game-viewing conditions.

June to October – Dry Season

Generally drier conditions make this a popular period for safari travel. Vegetation is often less dense, and wildlife may concentrate around permanent water sources, making animals easier to spot in some areas.

November to March – Green Season

Expect greener landscapes, seasonal rainfall and excellent birdlife. Short rains can occur, particularly in November and December, but they do not necessarily last throughout the day.

April to May – Long Rains

These months typically receive heavier rainfall. The landscape is lush and green, visitor numbers may be lower, and road or game-viewing conditions can be affected by rain.

Year-round departures: This safari operates throughout the year on scheduled group departure days, subject to availability. Wildlife is free-ranging, and viewing conditions vary with rainfall, vegetation and animal movements.

Wildlife You May See

This 2-day Tarangire and Ngorongoro safari combines two different wildlife habitats, giving you opportunities to see a wide variety of East African animals within a short itinerary. Wildlife is free-ranging, so sightings vary by season, weather and animal movements.

Who Is This Safari Best For?

This 2 Days Tarangire & Ngorongoro Group Safari is particularly well suited to:

  • Solo travellers looking to join other guests rather than book a private safari.

  • Couples and friends comfortable sharing a safari vehicle and game drives with a small group.

  • Budget-conscious travellers who want to experience Tarangire and Ngorongoro while sharing transport and operating costs.

  • Travellers with limited time who want to experience two major northern Tanzania wildlife destinations in just two days.

  • Zanzibar travellers looking to add a short mainland wildlife safari before or after their beach holiday.

Prefer more privacy and flexibility? The same Tarangire and Ngorongoro itinerary can also be arranged as a private safari with an exclusive 4×4 vehicle.

Practical Travel Information

Arrival & Departure

This safari starts and ends in Arusha. We recommend arriving in Arusha at least one day before departure where possible, as this reduces the risk of flight delays affecting your scheduled group safari. Your exact meeting point and pickup time will be confirmed before departure.

What to Pack

Pack light and bring comfortable safari clothing, closed shoes, a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, insect repellent, personal medication, camera equipment and a warm layer for the Ngorongoro Highlands, where mornings and evenings can be cool.

Luggage

Luggage space in shared safari vehicles is limited, so soft-sided travel bags are recommended instead of large hard-shell suitcases. Ask us in advance if you require luggage storage in Arusha.

Travel Insurance & Entry Requirements

Comprehensive travel insurance, including medical coverage, is recommended. International travellers are responsible for ensuring they have a valid passport and the appropriate Tanzania visa or entry permission for their journey.

Group Safari Etiquette

As this is a shared safari, guests should be ready at the confirmed departure time and be considerate of other travellers during game drives, photography stops and scheduled departures.
