2 Days Tarangire & Ngorongoro Safari Overview
This 2 Days Tarangire & Ngorongoro Safari from Arusha is designed for travellers with limited time who still want two distinctly different wildlife experiences in Northern Tanzania. The route works particularly well as a short safari because Tarangire and Ngorongoro can be combined without the longer road journey required to reach the Serengeti.
Your safari begins in Tarangire National Park, renowned for its large elephant herds, ancient baobab trees and wildlife concentrated around the Tarangire River, particularly during the dry season. The following day, you explore the Ngorongoro Crater, where permanent water and varied habitats support an exceptional concentration of wildlife within a relatively compact area.
During your crater game drive, you can search for lions, elephants, buffaloes, hippos, hyenas, zebras, wildebeest and the endangered black rhino. Together, these two destinations make this private 2-day Tanzania safari an excellent choice for wildlife variety, dramatic landscapes and efficient travel from Arusha.

Is 2 Days Enough for Tarangire & Ngorongoro?
Yes. Two days is enough to visit Tarangire National Park and Ngorongoro Crater if you are starting and ending in Arusha and want a short but rewarding Northern Tanzania safari. The itinerary is relatively fast-paced, but the route works well because the two wildlife areas can be combined without travelling as far as the Serengeti.
On Day 1, you will drive from Arusha to Tarangire National Park for a game drive among its baobab-dotted landscapes, with excellent opportunities to see elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest and other wildlife. After the game drive, you continue to the Karatu/Ngorongoro area for your overnight stay.
Day 2 starts early with a descent into Ngorongoro Crater, where the concentrated wildlife population offers opportunities to see lions, buffalo, hippos, zebras, wildebeest and, with luck, the endangered black rhino. After the crater game drive and picnic lunch, you return to Arusha.
Is This 2-Day Safari Right for You?
This itinerary is particularly suitable for travellers who:
- Have only two days available for safari from Arusha.
- Want to experience two contrasting wildlife destinations.
- Prefer a private 4×4 safari rather than a group-joining tour.
- Want to see Tarangire's elephants and baobab landscapes.
- Want an opportunity to see diverse wildlife in Ngorongoro Crater.
- Are comfortable with early starts and a relatively active itinerary.
For a more relaxed safari or significantly more game-viewing time, we recommend extending the trip to three or four days. Travellers who want to include the Serengeti should allow additional days rather than trying to fit Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro into a two-day itinerary.
Why Choose This 2-Day Tarangire & Ngorongoro Safari?
This short Tanzania safari combines two very different wildlife areas in one practical route from Arusha. Here are six reasons the itinerary works particularly well:

| Ngorongoro Crater Game Drive | Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for game viewing within one of Tanzania’s most distinctive wildlife landscapes. |
| Big Five Potential | Ngorongoro offers the possibility of seeing lion, elephant, buffalo and the endangered black rhino, while leopard sightings are possible but less predictable. |
| Two Contrasting Ecosystems | Experience Tarangire’s open savannah, riverine habitat and baobab-dotted scenery followed by the grasslands, wetlands and forest of the Ngorongoro Crater. |
| Private 4×4 Land Cruiser | Travel in your own private safari Land Cruiser with a professional guide, giving you greater flexibility for wildlife viewing and photography. |
| Convenient Arusha Start & End | The itinerary starts and finishes in Arusha, making it practical for travellers with limited time or those connecting with Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar or another Tanzania safari. |

Tarangire vs Ngorongoro Crater – What Is the Difference?
Tarangire National Park and Ngorongoro Crater offer two very different safari experiences, which is why they work particularly well together on a short Northern Tanzania itinerary. Tarangire is known for its elephant herds, ancient baobab trees and open wilderness, while Ngorongoro offers exceptionally concentrated wildlife viewing within a dramatic volcanic caldera.
| Safari Experience | Tarangire National Park | Ngorongoro Crater |
|---|---|---|
| Best Known For | Elephants, baobabs & Tarangire River | Concentrated wildlife & crater scenery |
| Landscape | Savannah, river valley, woodland & baobab country | Volcanic caldera, grasslands, wetlands & forest |
| Elephant Viewing | Excellent | Good |
| Black Rhino Opportunity | Very limited | One of the better opportunities in Northern Tanzania |
| Lion Viewing | Good opportunities | Frequently encountered |
| Other Wildlife | Giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, antelopes & predators | Buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas, lions & antelopes |
| Birdlife | Excellent and highly diverse | Excellent, including wetland and grassland species |
| Best Time | Year-round; particularly rewarding during June–October | Rewarding throughout the year |
| Safari Character | More open, expansive wilderness experience | Concentrated wildlife viewing within the crater |
| Main Highlight | Elephants among baobabs and river-based wildlife | Crater-floor game drive with Big Five opportunities |
Why Combine Tarangire and Ngorongoro?
The main advantage of this two-day safari is variety without travelling as far as the Serengeti. On Day 1, Tarangire provides a more expansive safari experience with baobab landscapes, elephant herds and wildlife around the Tarangire River ecosystem. On Day 2, Ngorongoro offers a completely different setting, with wildlife concentrated across the crater floor beneath the steep caldera walls.
For travellers with limited time in Arusha, combining the two destinations provides contrasting landscapes, different wildlife-viewing environments and strong game-viewing opportunities within a practical two-day route.
Wildlife note: All animals are wild and move freely within their ecosystems. Specific sightings, including black rhino, lions and other predators, cannot be guaranteed.
Driving Times & Distances – Tarangire & Ngorongoro Safari
Understanding the road journey helps you plan realistically for this short Northern Tanzania safari. The itinerary involves several road transfers, but staying in the Karatu/Ngorongoro area after Tarangire positions you conveniently for an early start at Ngorongoro Crater on Day 2.
| Route | Approximate Driving Time | What to Expect |
|---|---|---|
| Arusha → Tarangire National Park | 2–2.5 hours | Morning road transfer from Arusha to Tarangire |
| Tarangire → Karatu/Ngorongoro Area | 2–2.5 hours | Transfer after the Tarangire game drive to your overnight accommodation |
| Karatu/Ngorongoro Area → Ngorongoro Conservation Area Entrance | 30–45 minutes | Early morning drive towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area |
| Ngorongoro → Arusha | 3–4 hours | Afternoon return journey after the crater game drive |
Please note: Driving times are approximate and may vary depending on traffic, road conditions, weather, wildlife stops and the exact location of your accommodation. Game-drive time inside Tarangire National Park and Ngorongoro Crater is separate from the road-transfer times shown above.
Best Time for a Tarangire & Ngorongoro Safari
The 2 Days Tarangire & Ngorongoro Safari can be enjoyed throughout the year, although wildlife conditions, scenery and visitor numbers change with the seasons. Tarangire is particularly rewarding during the dry season, while Ngorongoro Crater offers reliable wildlife viewing across most months because many animals remain within or around the crater ecosystem.
| Travel Period | Tarangire & Ngorongoro Experience | What to Expect |
|---|---|---|
| June–October | ⭐ Excellent | Dry-season conditions bring wildlife towards permanent water sources in Tarangire, creating particularly good opportunities to see elephants and other animals. Ngorongoro also offers strong game viewing. |
| November–December | ⭐ Very Good | Short rains bring greener landscapes and fresh vegetation. Wildlife viewing remains rewarding, with generally fewer visitors than during the peak dry-season months. |
| January–March | ⭐ Excellent | Warm conditions, green landscapes and good general wildlife viewing make this an excellent period for a Northern Tanzania safari. |
| April–May | ⭐ Good / Green Season | The wetter months bring lush scenery, fewer safari vehicles and excellent photographic landscapes, although rainfall can affect road and game-drive conditions. |
Tarangire: Best for Dry-Season Wildlife
June to October is particularly rewarding in Tarangire National Park. As surrounding areas become drier, wildlife increasingly concentrates around the Tarangire River and other dependable water sources. This period is especially well known for elephant viewing.
The greener months offer a different experience, with lush landscapes, excellent birdlife and fewer visitors. Wildlife remains present throughout the year, although animals can be more dispersed when water is widely available.
Ngorongoro Crater: A Year-Round Safari Destination
Ngorongoro Crater offers rewarding wildlife viewing throughout the year. Its varied habitats support substantial resident wildlife, including buffalo, wildebeest, zebras, hippos, lions, hyenas and numerous antelope species. The crater also provides an opportunity to see the endangered black rhino, although sightings are never guaranteed.
Our Recommendation
For travellers primarily interested in Tarangire's elephant concentrations and classic dry-season game viewing, June to October is our preferred period. However, we would not discourage travellers from booking this safari during other months. November through March can offer beautiful green landscapes and rewarding wildlife viewing, while April and May suit travellers comfortable with seasonal rainfall who prefer fewer visitors.

Want More Time on Safari?

All optional activities, accommodation upgrades and extensions are subject to availability and additional cost and will be clearly shown in your personalised quotation before booking.
Wildlife You May See on This 2-Day Safari
Combining Tarangire National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater gives you the opportunity to experience two different wildlife habitats within a short Tanzania safari. Tarangire is particularly well known for elephants and dry-season wildlife concentrations, while Ngorongoro offers a high concentration of resident animals within the crater.
Wildlife Viewing Note: Wildlife moves freely within natural ecosystems, so specific species and Big Five sightings cannot be guaranteed. Black rhino, leopard and other predator sightings depend on wildlife movements, visibility and conditions on the day of your safari. Your professional safari guide will use local knowledge and recent wildlife activity to help maximise your wildlife-viewing opportunities.
Wildlife in Tarangire National Park
Tarangire is especially famous for its elephants, with large herds often seen around the Tarangire River during the dry season. The park's varied habitats also support a wide range of plains game, predators and birdlife.
You may encounter:
- African elephants
- Lions
- Giraffes
- Buffalo
- Zebras
- Wildebeest
- Impalas and other antelope
- Warthogs
- Baboons and vervet monkeys
- Hyenas and, with luck, other predators
- Numerous resident and migratory bird species
The combination of wildlife, ancient baobab trees, open savannah and the Tarangire River makes the park particularly rewarding for wildlife photography.
Wildlife in the Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Crater supports a high concentration of wildlife across its grasslands, wetlands, woodland and freshwater habitats. Its relatively compact game-viewing area means several different species can often be encountered during a single crater drive.
Possible sightings include:
- Lions
- African buffalo
- Elephants
- Wildebeest
- Zebras
- Hippos
- Spotted hyenas
- Thomson's and Grant's gazelles
- Warthogs
- Jackals
- Flamingos and other waterbirds
- Endangered black rhino
Ngorongoro offers Big Five potential, but this should not be interpreted as a guarantee. Black rhinos can sometimes be seen at a distance, while leopards are generally less predictable and may be difficult to locate during a short crater visit.
Which Park Is Better for Wildlife?
Neither park is simply “better.” Tarangire is particularly strong for elephants, landscapes and seasonal wildlife concentrations, while Ngorongoro is excellent for viewing a diverse range of animals within a relatively compact area. Visiting both is what gives this two-day itinerary its variety.
What to Pack for Your 2-Day Safari
For a 2-day Tarangire and Ngorongoro safari, pack light and focus on comfortable clothing, sun protection and a few essentials for game viewing. Mornings around the Ngorongoro highlands can be cool, while daytime temperatures in Tarangire may be considerably warmer.
- Lightweight, neutral-coloured clothing for daytime game drives
- Warm fleece or light jacket for early mornings and the Ngorongoro highlands
- Comfortable closed shoes or walking shoes
- Sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
- Binoculars for wildlife and bird viewing
- Camera, spare battery and memory cards
- Reusable water bottle
- Small daypack for items needed during game drives
- Personal medication and basic toiletries
- Passport and required travel documents
A soft-sided travel bag is generally more practical than a large hard-shell suitcase, particularly when combining your safari with domestic flights or other Tanzania destinations.
Because this is only a 2-day / 1-night safari, there is no need to overpack. Bring layers that can be added or removed as temperatures change between Tarangire, Karatu and the Ngorongoro Crater.
Who Is This 2-Day Tarangire & Ngorongoro Safari For?
This short private safari is designed for travellers who want to experience two of Northern Tanzania's distinctive wildlife areas without adding the longer journey to the Serengeti.
- Travellers with limited time – Ideal if you have only two days available for safari while staying in Arusha or Northern Tanzania.
- First-time safari visitors – Experience two contrasting destinations, from Tarangire's elephant country and baobab landscapes to the wildlife-rich Ngorongoro Crater.
- Couples, families and small groups – Travel together in your own private 4×4 safari Land Cruiser without joining unrelated travellers.
- Zanzibar visitors – A practical option for travellers adding a short mainland wildlife safari before or after a Zanzibar beach holiday.
- Business travellers – Suitable for visitors who want to add a compact wildlife experience to a work or conference trip in Tanzania.
- Travellers who prefer not to rush to the Serengeti – Enjoy Tarangire and Ngorongoro within two days rather than spending a significant portion of a short safari travelling to and from the Serengeti.
Who Should Consider a Longer Safari?
If the Serengeti is one of your main priorities, we recommend allowing at least three to four days rather than trying to include it in this two-day itinerary. A longer Northern Tanzania safari provides more time for game drives, a more relaxed pace and the opportunity to experience additional wildlife areas.
Guide & Travel Expert Insights
After years of planning and operating safaris across northern Tanzania, we find that Tarangire and Ngorongoro work particularly well as a two-day combination because the route follows a logical circuit from Arusha without requiring unnecessary backtracking. The key to making this short itinerary rewarding is good timing and choosing the right overnight location.
Why We Visit Tarangire on Day 1
Starting with Tarangire National Park allows you to leave Arusha early and reach the park in approximately 2–2.5 hours. You can then spend a substantial part of the day game viewing before continuing towards Karatu.
Tarangire is especially rewarding for elephant viewing and baobab-dotted landscapes, while the Tarangire River becomes an important wildlife focus during the dry season. Beginning here also positions the safari naturally for Ngorongoro the following morning.
Why We Stay Overnight in Karatu
For this itinerary, we use Eileen’s Trees Inn Lodge in Karatu. Karatu is strategically located between Tarangire and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, making it a practical overnight base for a short safari.
Rather than returning to Arusha after Tarangire, staying in Karatu reduces unnecessary driving and allows you to reach the Ngorongoro entrance early the following morning. It also provides time for dinner and a proper night's rest between the two game-drive days.
Why an Early Ngorongoro Crater Descent Matters
We recommend leaving Karatu early on Day 2. Reaching Ngorongoro early gives you more usable game-viewing time on the crater floor before the afternoon return journey to Arusha.
Morning conditions can also be productive for wildlife viewing, and an early start helps you avoid losing valuable safari time later in the day. Your guide will adjust the game-drive route according to wildlife activity, road conditions and recent sightings rather than following a rigid circuit.
Our Guide's Safari Tip
Don't try to add another major park to these two days. Tarangire and Ngorongoro already make this a full, fast-paced itinerary. If Serengeti is important to you, extend the safari to at least three or four days.
For photographers, tell your guide about your priorities at the beginning of the safari. A private 4×4 Land Cruiser gives greater flexibility to spend more time at promising sightings rather than following a fixed group schedule.
Our Assessment
This is one of the more practical short safari combinations from Arusha for travellers with only two days available. Tarangire provides the open landscapes, elephants and classic game-drive experience, while Ngorongoro adds a very different ecosystem with high wildlife density and Big Five potential.
We recommend this itinerary for travellers who value variety and efficient use of limited time. For guests who prefer a slower pace, specialist photography or more extensive predator viewing, a longer 3–5 day Northern Tanzania safari will provide a better overall experience.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. How much does a 2-day Tarangire and Ngorongoro safari cost?
Our 2 Days Tarangire & Ngorongoro Safari starts from USD 530 per person, based on six travellers sharing one private 4×4 safari Land Cruiser. Current rates are USD 1,250 for one traveller, USD 850 per person for two, USD 700 for three, USD 625 for four, USD 570 for five and USD 530 for six travellers. The final price may vary according to travel dates, accommodation choice and any requested itinerary changes.
2. Is this a private or group-joining safari?
This is a private safari. Your booking will have its own 4×4 safari Land Cruiser and professional driver-guide, and you will not share the vehicle with unrelated travellers. This provides greater flexibility for game-viewing stops, photography and the overall pace of your safari.
3. What safari vehicle will we use?
The safari is operated in a private 4×4 safari Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof for wildlife viewing and photography. The vehicle is used for your road transfers and scheduled game drives in Tarangire National Park and Ngorongoro Crater.
4. Are Tarangire and Ngorongoro park fees included in the price?
Yes. The quoted safari price includes Tarangire National Park entry fees, Ngorongoro Conservation Area entry fees and the Ngorongoro Crater service/vehicle fee required for the scheduled game drives. Your confirmed quotation will clearly show the services and fees included in your safari.
5. Where will we stay between Tarangire and Ngorongoro?
You will spend one night in the Karatu/Ngorongoro area, conveniently located for continuing to Ngorongoro Crater the following morning. The specific lodge or tented camp will depend on the accommodation category selected and availability for your travel dates.
6. Can we see the Big Five on this safari?
This safari offers Big Five wildlife opportunities, particularly during the Ngorongoro Crater game drive. Lions, buffalo and elephants may be encountered, while Ngorongoro also provides an opportunity to see the endangered black rhino. Leopards are more elusive, particularly on a short safari. All wildlife is wild and moves freely, so specific sightings cannot be guaranteed.
7. Can this safari start from Kilimanjaro International Airport?
Yes. The itinerary can be adapted for travellers arriving through Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Depending on your flight arrival time, we can arrange an airport transfer to Arusha before the safari. For late arrivals, we generally recommend spending the night in Arusha and beginning the safari the following morning.
8. Can children and families take this 2-day safari?
Yes. This private safari can work well for families travelling with children because your family has its own safari vehicle and the itinerary can be adjusted where practical. When requesting a quotation, please provide the children's ages so that we can calculate the applicable accommodation and park-fee rates.
9. Can I extend this safari to include the Serengeti?
Yes. If Serengeti is a priority, we recommend adding extra safari days rather than trying to include Serengeti within this two-day itinerary. A longer Northern Tanzania itinerary allows more time for Serengeti game drives while maintaining a more practical travel schedule.
10. Can I combine this safari with a Zanzibar beach holiday?
Yes. Tarangire and Ngorongoro can be combined with a Zanzibar beach holiday as part of a longer Tanzania itinerary. Depending on your schedule, we can arrange the safari before or after Zanzibar and coordinate the necessary airport transfers and domestic flight connections.

Our team has first-hand experience planning and operating safaris across Tanzania and East Africa. We understand the routes, driving times, wildlife seasons and practical details that can make a short safari run smoothly.
2. Private 4×4 Safari Land Cruisers
Your safari is operated in a private 4×4 Land Cruiser, giving you your own vehicle and guide rather than sharing your game drives with unrelated travellers.
3. Experienced Safari Guides
Travel with a professional safari driver-guide with knowledge of Tanzania's wildlife, landscapes and national parks. Your guide also adapts game drives to wildlife activity and conditions on the day.
4. Customisable Safari Itineraries
Our itineraries can be adjusted around your travel dates, group size, accommodation preferences and budget. You can also extend this safari to Serengeti or combine it with other Tanzania destinations.
5. Clear Pricing & Inclusions
We provide a detailed quotation showing your safari price, accommodation, park fees, meals, transport and included services, helping you understand what you are paying for before confirming your booking.
6. Direct Local Support
From your initial enquiry through to the end of your safari, you have direct access to our East Africa-based team for planning, booking assistance and on-the-ground support.
Plan your safari with a local team that understands the route from Arusha to Tarangire, Karatu and Ngorongoro.

Editorial Assessment
Our assessment: This 2-day Tarangire and Ngorongoro safari is a practical choice for travellers with limited time who want to experience two contrasting northern Tanzania wildlife areas. Visiting Tarangire first, followed by an overnight stay in Karatu, creates a logical route and positions travellers for an early Ngorongoro Crater descent on Day 2.
The itinerary is rewarding but relatively fast-paced. We recommend it for travellers prioritising wildlife variety and efficient use of two available days. Travellers wanting more relaxed game drives, specialist photography or the Serengeti should consider extending their safari to at least three or four days.
