Detailed 7-Day Tanzania Big Five Safari & Zanzibar Itinerary

Follow your seven-day journey from Arusha to Zanzibar, with daily activities, travel arrangements, accommodation and meal plans clearly outlined. Each day includes practical information to help you understand what to expect before booking.

Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire – Elephant Safari

Your Tanzania safari begins with a morning pickup from your hotel in Arusha. Meet your professional English-speaking safari guide and travel approximately 2–2.5 hours to Tarangire National Park, famous for its large elephant herds, ancient baobab trees and beautiful savannah landscapes.

Enjoy your first private game drive, searching for elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, wildebeest and, with luck, lions or leopards. Your guide will help identify wildlife and explain the park's fascinating ecosystem.

Stop for a picnic lunch at a designated area before continuing your afternoon wildlife exploration.

Later, leave Tarangire and drive toward Karatu, a peaceful highland town near the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Check into your lodge, enjoy dinner and rest before tomorrow's early departure.

Accommodation: Eileen's Trees Inn or similar mid-range lodge, Karatu
Meals: Lunch and Dinner
Driving Time: Arusha to Tarangire approximately 2–2.5 hours, plus onward transfer to Karatu
Activities: Private game drive, wildlife photography and scenic transfer

Day 2: Ngorongoro Crater to Serengeti

After an early breakfast, depart Karatu for the Ngorongoro Crater, one of Tanzania's most extraordinary wildlife destinations. Descend to the crater floor for a game drive through grasslands, woodland and lakeside habitats.

Look for lions, buffaloes, elephants, hippos, zebras and hyenas. The crater is also one of Tanzania's notable locations for possible sightings of the endangered black rhino, although sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Enjoy a picnic lunch before ascending the crater rim and continuing toward Central Serengeti. The drive passes through the Ngorongoro highlands and expansive plains, with opportunities for wildlife viewing along the way.

Arrive at your tented safari camp in the evening for dinner and overnight accommodation.

Accommodation: Serengeti Kati Kati Tented Camp or similar mid-range camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Driving Time: Approximately 1–1.5 hours from Karatu to the crater access area, followed by several hours to Central Serengeti
Activities: Ngorongoro Crater game drive, scenic transfer and possible en-route wildlife viewing

Important Travel Note: This is a long safari day combining the Ngorongoro Crater visit with the journey to Serengeti. An early departure is essential, and arrival time depends on road conditions, wildlife stops and the duration of the crater game drive.

Day 3: Full-Day Serengeti Wildlife Safari

Wake up in the heart of Serengeti National Park and prepare for a full day exploring one of Africa's most celebrated wildlife destinations.

After breakfast, set out with your private safari guide across the Central Serengeti's open plains, rocky kopjes and riverine habitats. This region offers excellent opportunities to search for lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes and a wide variety of antelope species.

Depending on the season and movements of the herds, you may also encounter wildebeest and zebras associated with the Great Migration.

Enjoy a picnic lunch in the bush or return to camp, depending on your preferred game-drive arrangements.

Continue your wildlife exploration in the afternoon before returning to camp for dinner and a peaceful evening surrounded by the Serengeti wilderness.

Accommodation: Serengeti Kati Kati Tented Camp or similar
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Activities: Full-day private game drive, wildlife photography and seasonal migration viewing

Depending on your flight departure time, you may enjoy limited wildlife viewing during the transfer through the Serengeti.

Board your scheduled domestic flight and travel toward Zanzibar, where tropical beaches and the Indian Ocean await. Flight services may include intermediate stops or connections, depending on the airline and confirmed schedule.

Upon arrival at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, meet your transfer representative and travel privately to your selected beach resort in Nungwi.

For travellers interested in marine adventures, optional snorkelling and scuba-diving excursions can be arranged through suitable local operators, subject to weather and sea conditions.

You may also explore Nungwi village, discover local coastal life or enjoy a relaxed lunch at one of the beachfront restaurants.

This free day offers a welcome opportunity to rest after three rewarding nights exploring Tanzania's wildlife destinations.

Visit historic Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its winding streets, traditional architecture and lively markets. Alternatively, discover Zanzibar's spice-growing traditions on a guided spice farm tour.

For an ocean-based experience, consider a snorkelling trip or traditional dhow cruise, depending on local conditions and availability.

If you prefer a quieter day, remain in Nungwi and enjoy the beach, resort facilities and nearby restaurants.

Return to your accommodation for your final evening on Zanzibar, with time to enjoy the island's relaxed coastal atmosphere.

At the agreed pickup time, your private transfer driver will collect you from your accommodation and take you to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport.

Your transfer will be arranged according to your confirmed flight schedule, allowing suitable time for airport check-in and departure procedures.

Best Time for a Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar Beach Holiday

The best time for a Tanzania safari and Zanzibar beach holiday is generally from June to October and January to February, when conditions are often favourable for wildlife viewing in Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park, as well as beach relaxation in Zanzibar.

Tanzania offers rewarding safari experiences throughout the year. The ideal travel month depends on whether you prefer dry-season wildlife viewing, seasonal Great Migration encounters, green landscapes or fewer visitors.

Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar Weather by Season

Travel PeriodSafari ExperienceZanzibar Beach Conditions
January–FebruaryExcellent wildlife viewing; calving season in southern Serengeti and NdutuGenerally hot, with relatively drier conditions
March–MayGreen landscapes, fewer visitors and increased rainfallLong-rain season, with greater risk of heavy showers
June–OctoberExcellent dry-season wildlife viewing, particularly around water sourcesGenerally drier, pleasant beach conditions
November–DecemberGreen-season wildlife viewing and seasonal rainsWarm, humid conditions with possible short rains

June to October – Best for Dry-Season Safaris

The dry season is one of the most popular times to explore Tanzania's northern safari circuit. As vegetation becomes thinner and water sources more concentrated, wildlife can be easier to locate in Tarangire and Serengeti National Parks.

These months are also popular for Zanzibar beach holidays, offering generally pleasant conditions for swimming, relaxation and coastal excursions.

January to February – Big Cats & Calving Season

January and February are excellent months for travellers interested in predator activity and the southern Serengeti's seasonal wildebeest calving.

However, our standard itinerary includes accommodation in the central Serengeti. Travellers specifically seeking the calving migration may benefit from a customised route incorporating Ndutu or the southern Serengeti.

Zanzibar is generally warm during these months, making this period attractive for couples, honeymooners and families combining safari adventures with beach relaxation.

March to May – Green-Season Safari & Fewer Crowds

The long-rain season transforms Tanzania's landscapes into lush green scenery, creating beautiful photographic opportunities and attracting travellers who prefer quieter safari experiences.

Rainfall can make some safari tracks more challenging, while Zanzibar may experience heavy showers and reduced availability of certain marine activities.

Travellers visiting during this period should allow flexibility for weather conditions and flight operations.

November to December – Short Rains & Scenic Landscapes

November and December typically bring warmer temperatures, seasonal showers and renewed vegetation across parts of northern Tanzania.

Wildlife viewing remains possible in Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti, although animal movements vary with rainfall.

Zanzibar remains a year-round beach destination, with warm Indian Ocean temperatures and occasional tropical showers.

When Is the Great Migration Best Seen?

The Great Wildebeest Migration moves through different parts of the Serengeti ecosystem throughout the year.

  • January–March: Calving and predator activity are often concentrated around Ndutu and the southern Serengeti.

  • April–June: Herds may move through the southern, central and western Serengeti.

  • July–October: Migration activity often shifts toward the northern Serengeti, where Mara River crossings may occur.

  • November–December: Herds may begin returning toward the southern plains, depending on rainfall.

Important: Our standard 7-day itinerary includes two nights in the central Serengeti. Seasonal migration sightings cannot be guaranteed, and northern Serengeti river crossings are not included in the standard route.

Travellers whose main priority is the Great Migration can request a customised Serengeti itinerary based on their travel month.

Our Recommended Travel Months

For travellers seeking the best overall balance of Big Five safari opportunities, comfortable travel conditions and Zanzibar beach relaxation, June to October is our preferred period.

January and February are excellent alternatives, particularly for travellers interested in seasonal calving activity and warmer Zanzibar beach weather.

The best travel dates ultimately depend on your wildlife interests, preferred accommodation, budget and availability.

Safari Highlights: Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti & Zanzibar

“Our family loved exploring Tanzania's national parks together. The children were fascinated by the elephants, giraffes and lions, while our guide made every game drive interesting. The transition from Serengeti to Zanzibar was a fantastic part of the itinerary. We enjoyed the combination of wildlife adventure and relaxing beach time.”

Safari Expert Insights: Planning Your Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar Holiday

A well-planned Tanzania safari is about more than choosing national parks. Travel distances, accommodation locations and domestic flight schedules all affect how much time you spend enjoying wildlife rather than travelling between destinations.

Here are three practical considerations when planning this 7-day Tanzania safari and Zanzibar beach holiday.

1. Day 2: Ngorongoro Crater to Serengeti Is a Long Safari Day

Day 2 combines an early departure from Karatu, a game drive inside Ngorongoro Crater and an onward journey to Central Serengeti.

This is one of the busiest days of the itinerary. After exploring the crater, you continue through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area towards Serengeti National Park. Road conditions, park formalities, wildlife stops and weather can influence your arrival time.

Our planning advice: Start early, allow sufficient time for the crater experience and avoid promising an extensive additional Serengeti game drive on arrival. The main Serengeti wildlife-viewing opportunity is the following day.

2. Serengeti Camp Location Matters More Than Travellers Often Realise

The standard itinerary includes two nights in Central Serengeti, an excellent base for general wildlife viewing throughout the year.

Choosing accommodation within a practical driving distance of the planned game-drive areas helps reduce unnecessary transfers and provides more time for wildlife observation.

For this mid-range package, Serengeti Kati Kati Tented Camp or a comparable Central Serengeti camp is a proposed option.

Our planning advice: Confirm the camp's exact location before booking. Travellers specifically interested in the Great Migration calving season or Mara River crossings may need a different Serengeti region and a revised itinerary.

3. Day 4: Plan Your Serengeti–Zanzibar Flight Around the Confirmed Schedule

Your fourth day includes a transfer to the Serengeti airstrip, a scheduled domestic flight to Zanzibar and a private transfer to your beach resort.

Departure times depend on the airline, operating route and available seats. Some services include intermediate stops, so the journey may take longer than the direct flying time.

An early departure may leave limited time for a morning game drive. A later departure could allow additional wildlife viewing, depending on the camp location and airstrip reporting requirements.

Our planning advice: Treat Day 4 primarily as a travel day. Confirm your flight schedule before finalising game-drive arrangements, Zanzibar transfers and resort arrival expectations.
