Detailed 7-Day Masai Mara, Serengeti & Ngorongoro Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi to Masai Mara National Reserve – Afternoon Game Drive

Safari Route: Nairobi → Great Rift Valley → Masai Mara
Approximate Driving Time: 5–6 hours, depending on road conditions and stops.

Your 7 Days Masai Mara, Serengeti & Ngorongoro Mid-Range Safari begins with a morning pickup from your Nairobi hotel. Meet your professional Kenyan driver-guide and depart in a private 4×4 Land Cruiser towards the world-famous Masai Mara National Reserve.

Travel through the scenic Great Rift Valley, with opportunities for photography and short refreshment stops along the way. Continue towards the Masai Mara, arriving around lunchtime or early afternoon, depending on departure time and traffic.

After lunch and check-in at Mara Sopa Lodge, head into the reserve for your first afternoon game drive. Look out for elephants, giraffes, zebras, antelopes and the Mara's resident predators.

Return to your lodge before evening for dinner and relaxation.

Meals: Lunch and dinner
Accommodation: Mara Sopa Lodge
Safari Experience: Afternoon Masai Mara game drive

Day 2: Full-Day Masai Mara Safari – Big Five & Wildlife Photography

Safari Route: Masai Mara National Reserve
Safari Activity: Full-day game drive with picnic lunch.

After an early breakfast at Mara Sopa Lodge, depart for a full-day wildlife adventure in the Masai Mara, one of Africa's most celebrated safari destinations.

Explore the reserve's open grasslands, riverine habitats and wildlife-rich plains with your experienced driver-guide. The Masai Mara is known for its lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, cheetahs and large populations of grazing herbivores.

Your private safari vehicle allows flexibility to spend additional time at interesting sightings and photograph wildlife without following a fixed group schedule.

Enjoy a packed picnic lunch at a designated location before continuing your afternoon game drive. During the seasonal Great Migration, wildebeest and zebra herds may be present, although sightings and river crossings depend on their movements.

Return to Mara Sopa Lodge in the late afternoon.

Meals: Breakfast, picnic lunch and dinner
Accommodation: Mara Sopa Lodge
Safari Experience: Full-day Masai Mara game drive

Day 3: Masai Mara to Serengeti National Park via Isebania–Sirari Border

Safari Route: Mara Sopa Lodge → Isebania Border → Sirari → Western Serengeti (Ndabaka Gate) → Central Serengeti

Departure: Early morning, with the exact pickup time confirmed by your safari coordinator.

Estimated Travel Time: Approximately 9–12 hours or longer, depending on road conditions, immigration procedures, park entry and wildlife stops.

After an early breakfast at Mara Sopa Lodge, depart for the Kenya–Tanzania border at Isebania. Your Kenyan driver-guide will coordinate the transfer, allowing time for the journey through southwestern Kenya and the required immigration procedures.

At Isebania/Sirari, complete Kenyan exit and Tanzanian entry formalities before meeting your Tanzanian driver-guide. Your luggage will be transferred to a private Tanzanian 4×4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, ready for the next stage of your safari.

Continue towards Serengeti National Park via the western access route, with entry planned through Ndabaka Gate. After completing the necessary park formalities, travel through the Western Serengeti towards the Central Serengeti and Serengeti Queen Camp.

This is primarily a long-distance transfer day rather than a full-day game drive. Wildlife sightings may occur along the park route, but extended photography stops will depend on the time available.

Important Travel Planning: Your safari team will coordinate the departure, border handover and park entry schedule to comply with permitted travel hours. Arrival at Serengeti Queen Camp depends on immigration processing, road conditions and park entry timing. If unexpected delays threaten the permitted travel window, the team will follow a compliant contingency arrangement rather than continue driving after permitted hours.

Enjoy a packed lunch during the journey and proceed to your accommodation according to the confirmed travel arrangements.

Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch and dinner

Accommodation: Serengeti Queen Camp

Safari Experience: Kenya–Tanzania border crossing, scenic overland journey and en-route Serengeti wildlife viewing.

Your driver-guide will select game-viewing routes according to recent wildlife activity, seasonal conditions and your interests.

Stop for a picnic lunch at an authorized location before continuing your afternoon safari, with opportunities to observe animal behaviour and capture memorable wildlife photographs.

Return to Serengeti Queen Camp in the late afternoon for dinner and relaxation.

Today offers another opportunity to explore the Serengeti's remarkable wildlife habitats without changing accommodation.

After breakfast, depart with your private driver-guide to explore different sections of the Central Serengeti, focusing on areas where wildlife activity is strongest. Search for lion prides resting near rocky outcrops, cheetahs scanning the plains and elephants moving between feeding grounds.

Depending on wildlife movements and your preferences, choose a full-day game drive with a packed lunch or separate morning and afternoon excursions with a midday break at camp.

The flexibility of a private safari allows additional time for photography, birdwatching and observing animal interactions.

Return to Serengeti Queen Camp for your final evening in the Serengeti.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Accommodation: Serengeti Queen Camp
Safari Experience: Flexible Serengeti wildlife exploration

Day 6: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Conservation Area – Scenic Safari Transfer

The landscape gradually changes from open savannah to the highlands surrounding Ngorongoro. Your guide will explain the area's volcanic history, conservation significance and the traditional pastoral lifestyle of communities living within the conservation area.

After an early breakfast at Ang'ata Ngorongoro Camp, depart for a memorable game drive inside Ngorongoro Crater, one of Africa's most extraordinary wildlife conservation areas.

Descend approximately 600 metres from the crater rim to explore the grasslands, wetlands and acacia habitats of the crater floor.

Look for lions, elephants, buffaloes, hippos, zebras, wildebeest and, with luck, the endangered black rhinoceros. Your experienced guide will navigate designated game-viewing tracks while explaining the crater's unique ecosystem.

Enjoy a picnic lunch at a designated location before ascending the crater rim and beginning your return journey to Arusha.

Arrive in Arusha in the late afternoon or early evening, depending on traffic and departure time from the crater.

Where to Look for Different Wildlife

Masai Mara – Big Cats and Open-Plains Wildlife

The Masai Mara is particularly rewarding for lions, cheetahs, elephants, buffaloes and large grazing herds. During migration season, wildebeest and zebras may also be present in substantial numbers.

Central Serengeti – Leopards, Lions and Resident Wildlife

The Seronera region offers year-round opportunities to observe resident predators. Leopards are often associated with wooded river valleys, while lions and cheetahs inhabit the surrounding plains and kopje landscapes.

Ngorongoro Crater – Black Rhinos and Concentrated Wildlife

Ngorongoro Crater supports lions, buffaloes, elephants, hippos, zebras and numerous bird species. It is also one of Tanzania's important habitats for the endangered black rhinoceros, although sightings are never guaranteed.

Birdwatching Opportunities

Birdwatchers may encounter African fish eagles, secretary birds, hornbills, vultures, ostriches, crowned cranes and other savannah and wetland species across the three destinations.

Wildlife Viewing Note: All animals are wild and move freely within their habitats. Sightings depend on season, weather, animal movements and time spent in each area. Big Five sightings, predator hunts and Great Migration river crossings cannot be guaranteed.

Best Time to Visit Masai Mara, Serengeti & Ngorongoro – 2027–2028 Safari Guide

The best time for a seven-day Masai Mara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro safari depends on your wildlife interests, preferred weather and travel budget.

July to October is generally the most popular period for dry-season wildlife viewing, while January to March offers excellent predator sightings and opportunities to experience the southern Serengeti calving season with an adjusted itinerary.

Our standard seven-day private safari includes two nights in the Masai Mara, three nights in the Central Serengeti and one night near Ngorongoro Crater. Wildlife viewing is rewarding throughout the year, but some seasonal migration experiences require changes to the standard route.

Best Time to Visit by Month

Travel PeriodWildlife & Safari ConditionsOur Recommendation
January–MarchResident wildlife and predators in the Central Serengeti; calving activity generally concentrated farther south in Ndutu and Southern SerengetiExcellent for general wildlife; modify the route for calving
April–MayGreen landscapes, fewer visitors, birdlife and seasonal rainfall; some roads may be muddyGood for flexible travellers seeking quieter parks
JuneDrier conditions begin developing; wildlife viewing improves around permanent water sourcesExcellent for general wildlife and photography
July–AugustDry-season wildlife viewing; migration herds may reach the Masai Mara and Northern SerengetiHighly recommended for big cats and possible migration activity
September–OctoberStrong dry-season viewing; migration herds may remain in northern ecosystemsRecommended for Masai Mara wildlife and possible crossings
November–DecemberShort rains, greener landscapes and active resident wildlife; migration movements varyGood for photography and a quieter safari experience

Migration movements depend on rainfall and grazing conditions. Seasonal patterns are approximate, and no specific wildlife sighting or river crossing can be guaranteed.

Best Safari Months Based on Your Wildlife Interests

Great Migration in the Masai MaraGenerally July–OctoberYes, when migrating herds are present
Mara River crossingsGenerally July–OctoberPartly – Masai Mara viewing is possible, but a crossing cannot be guaranteed
Northern Serengeti river crossingsGenerally July–OctoberNo – Northern Serengeti accommodation and game drives must be added
Wildebeest calving seasonGenerally January–March, especially FebruaryNo – Ndutu or Southern Serengeti should replace or supplement Central Serengeti

When Should You Modify This Safari Itinerary?

The standard itinerary is designed for travellers seeking a balanced private wildlife safari across Kenya and Tanzania. However, we recommend adjusting the route for certain seasonal experiences.

1. January–March: Wildebeest Calving Season

The main wildebeest calving activity generally occurs around Ndutu and the Southern Serengeti, particularly during February.

Because our standard itinerary spends three nights in the Central Serengeti, it does not specifically target the calving grounds.

Our Recommendation: Replace some Central Serengeti nights with Ndutu or Southern Serengeti accommodation, depending on seasonal wildlife movements and camp availability.

This adjustment is particularly suitable for travellers interested in newborn wildebeest, predator activity and wildlife photography.

2. July–October: Great Migration and Mara River Crossings

During the dry season, migrating wildebeest and zebras may be found in the Masai Mara and Northern Serengeti.

Our standard safari includes two nights in the Masai Mara, offering opportunities to search for migration herds when they are present.

However, the three Serengeti nights are spent in the Central Serengeti, not the Northern Serengeti.

Our Recommendation: Travellers specifically interested in Northern Serengeti river crossings should request an itinerary including Kogatende or the Mara River region, preferably with additional safari days.

Even during peak migration months, river crossings are unpredictable and cannot be guaranteed.

3. April–May: Green-Season Safari

April and May generally bring wetter conditions to parts of Kenya and Tanzania. The landscape becomes greener, visitor numbers may be lower and wildlife photography can be particularly rewarding.

The standard itinerary can still provide excellent resident wildlife viewing, although road conditions and rain may affect travel schedules.

Our Recommendation: Retain the standard route if you are comfortable with seasonal rainfall and flexible game-drive arrangements. Confirm accommodation operations and road accessibility before booking.

4. June and November–December: General Wildlife Safari

These months can be attractive for travellers who want varied wildlife viewing without focusing exclusively on migration river crossings.

The Masai Mara, Central Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater support resident wildlife throughout the year.

Our Recommendation: Keep the standard seven-day itinerary, with adjustments only if your travel dates or wildlife interests require a different route.

Our Recommended Time to Book

For first-time safari travellers: June–October offers generally favourable wildlife-viewing conditions, although July–October is often busier and more expensive.

For honeymooners and couples: January–March or June–October can provide rewarding private safari experiences, depending on preferred weather and accommodation availability.

For wildlife photographers: Choose January–March for green landscapes and possible calving-focused itinerary extensions, or July–October for dry-season conditions and migration opportunities.

For travellers seeking fewer crowds: Consider April–May or November, while allowing flexibility for rainfall.

Travel Times & Kenya–Tanzania Border Crossing – 7-Day Safari

This seven-day private safari travels from Nairobi through the Masai Mara and Serengeti before finishing in Arusha. Road transfers are part of the experience, with the longest journey taking place on Day 3 between Kenya and Tanzania.

Estimated Safari Travel Times

Safari DayRouteEstimated Travel Time
Day 1Nairobi to Masai MaraApproximately 5–7 hours
Day 2Masai Mara game drivesFlexible game-drive schedule
Day 3Masai Mara to Central Serengeti via Isebania–SirariApproximately 9–12+ hours
Day 4Central Serengeti game drivesFlexible game-drive schedule
Day 5Central Serengeti game drivesFlexible game-drive schedule
Day 6Central Serengeti to Ngorongoro HighlandsApproximately 4–6 hours, excluding extended stops
Day 7Ngorongoro Crater to ArushaApproximately 3–4 hours after the crater visit

Travel times are estimates and may vary with road conditions, weather, park procedures, wildlife stops and immigration processing.

Day 3: Masai Mara to Serengeti via Isebania–Sirari

Day 3 is the longest travel day of this safari. An early departure from Mara Sopa Lodge is planned to allow sufficient time for the international border crossing and onward journey towards Serengeti National Park.

Your Kenyan driver-guide will accompany you to Isebania, where you complete Kenya's exit formalities.

After entering Tanzania at Sirari, you will meet your Tanzanian driver-guide and transfer your luggage to your private Tanzanian 4×4 Land Cruiser.

The planned onward route continues towards Ndabaka Gate, through Western Serengeti and onwards to Serengeti Queen Camp in Central Serengeti.

Important: This is primarily a transfer day rather than a full-day game drive. Arrival depends on border processing, road conditions and permitted park travel hours. The route and contingency arrangements must be confirmed by our operations team before departure.

Kenya–Tanzania Immigration Requirements

Travellers must carry valid passports and meet the entry requirements for both Kenya and Tanzania.

Depending on nationality, a Kenya Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) and a separate Tanzania visa may be required.

Kenya's eTA does not provide entry into Tanzania. Travellers should check their individual visa requirements before departure.

Luggage and Vehicle Handover

Your luggage will travel with you in the safari vehicles and will be transferred during the planned border handover.

We recommend soft-sided travel bags because they are easier to accommodate in safari vehicles than large rigid suitcases.

Please inform our team in advance if you are travelling with oversized luggage, photography equipment or special mobility requirements.

Border Crossing and Travel Support

East Africa Jungle coordinates the planned driver-guide and vehicle change at Isebania–Sirari as part of your private safari arrangements.

Our team will provide practical border information before departure, including the documents required for your journey.

Travel Planning Note: The cross-border journey is demanding. Travellers seeking a slower pace can request an additional overnight stop or a revised itinerary, subject to route feasibility and quotation.
