 Expert Insight

There is no single "best" Kenya safari—only the one that's right for you. First-time visitors often enjoy a 5 to 7-day safari covering the Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru and Amboseli, while photographers and returning travellers usually benefit from 8 to 15-day itineraries that allow more time in each park. We always recommend choosing an itinerary that balances travel time with game-drive opportunities, as spending longer in the right locations often leads to more rewarding wildlife encounters than simply visiting more destinations.

Expert Insight

Every traveller experiences Kenya differently. Some prefer a short Big Five safari, while others want to explore every corner of the country. Our local safari specialists have carefully designed these itineraries to balance wildlife viewing, travel time and comfort, ensuring every journey delivers an authentic and memorable safari experience.

I prefer this format because it avoids repetitive headings, gives each itinerary its own identity, and naturally targets different search intents such as Big Five, luxury, conservation, beach holidays, family travel, and off-the-beaten-path adventures without repeating "Kenya Safari" throughout.

Road Safari vs Fly-In Safari from Nairobi (2026/2027)

When planning a Kenya safari from Nairobi, one of the biggest decisions is whether to travel by road, light aircraft, or combine both. Each option offers a different experience, and the best choice depends on your available time, budget and preferred travel style. The comparison below will help you decide which safari option is right for you.

FeatureRoad SafariFly-In SafariRoad & Fly Combination

Best DestinationsMasai Mara, Lake Nakuru, Amboseli, TsavoMasai Mara, Amboseli, Samburu, MeruMulti-park itineraries and luxury safaris
Best ForBudget travellers, families and first-time visitorsLuxury travellers, honeymooners and those with limited timeTravellers wanting the best of both experiences

Road Safari

A road safari lets you experience Kenya beyond its national parks. Travel through the spectacular Great Rift Valley, pass traditional villages and changing landscapes, and enjoy scenic stopovers before reaching your safari destination. It's an excellent choice for travellers who enjoy the journey as much as the wildlife.

Advantages

  • Most affordable safari option.
  • Scenic drive through Kenya's diverse landscapes.
  • Visit attractions such as the Great Rift Valley Viewpoint.
  • Ideal for multi-park itineraries.
  • Excellent value for families and first-time visitors.

Fly-In Safari

A fly-in safari uses scheduled light aircraft from Nairobi's Wilson Airport to Kenya's leading safari destinations, including the Masai Mara, Amboseli and Samburu. Flying significantly reduces travel time, allowing you to spend more time on game drives and relaxing at your lodge.

Advantages

  • Reach national parks quickly.
  • More time for wildlife viewing.
  • Spectacular aerial views of Kenya.
  • Ideal for luxury safaris and honeymooners.
  • Greater comfort with minimal road travel.

Please Note: Fly-in safaris generally allow soft-sided luggage with a maximum weight of 15 kg (33 lbs) per person.

Road & Fly Combination

A combined road-and-fly itinerary offers the best of both worlds. Travel overland to experience Kenya's breathtaking scenery, then return to Nairobi by air, avoiding a long drive back. This option is especially popular on longer itineraries covering multiple destinations.

Advantages

  • Experience Kenya by both road and air.
  • Save valuable travel time.
  • Reduce long return journeys.
  • More time for game drives.
  • Ideal for 6–12 day safari itineraries.

Expert Insight

If you're visiting Kenya for the first time and have enough time, a road safari offers excellent value and allows you to appreciate the country's diverse landscapes. If your holiday is shorter or you prefer maximum comfort, a fly-in safari lets you spend more time enjoying wildlife and less time travelling. For many travellers, a road-and-fly combination provides the perfect balance between adventure, convenience and value.

Need Help Choosing the Best Travel Option?

Our Kenya safari specialists will recommend the most suitable road, fly-in or combined itinerary based on your travel dates, budget and preferred safari experience.

Budget Accommodation

Budget camps provide excellent value without compromising your safari experience. Expect comfortable private rooms, hot showers, delicious meals and convenient locations close to Kenya's leading national parks.

Mid-Range Accommodation

Mid-range lodges are the most popular choice for visitors to Kenya. They offer a comfortable balance of quality, location and affordability, making them ideal for travellers who want excellent facilities while staying close to wildlife.

Luxury Accommodation

Luxury safari camps combine outstanding comfort with exceptional wildlife experiences. Many feature panoramic views, gourmet dining, personalised service, private decks and locations in some of Kenya's most spectacular wildlife areas.

Family Accommodation

Many lodges offer spacious family rooms, interconnected accommodation and family-friendly facilities. During peak travel seasons, these rooms are in high demand, so booking several months in advance is strongly recommended.

Expert Insight

When choosing a safari lodge, location is often more important than luxury. A well-positioned mid-range camp inside or close to a national park can provide earlier game drives, shorter travel times and more wildlife sightings than a luxury lodge located farther away. We always recommend selecting accommodation based on its proximity to the best wildlife-viewing areas as well as the level of comfort you prefer.

Planning & Packing for Your Kenya Safari from Nairobi (2026/2027)

A well-planned safari begins long before you arrive in Kenya. Choosing the right travel season, booking early, packing suitable clothing and preparing your travel documents all contribute to a smoother and more enjoyable adventure. Before travelling, we recommend checking the latest Kenya eTA requirements (https://etakenya.go.ke/  ) to ensure you have the correct travel authorization. Whether you're joining a group safari or travelling privately, the practical guide below will help you prepare for an unforgettable wildlife experience across Kenya's national parks and conservancies.

Planning & Packing TipWhy It Matters
Book Your Safari EarlyPopular lodges, family rooms and fly-in safaris often sell out months in advance, especially from July to October and during holiday periods.
Choose the Right Safari DurationSelect an itinerary that balances game drives, travel time and relaxation based on your available holiday.
Travel During the Best SeasonWildlife viewing is rewarding year-round, but travel dates can influence weather, landscapes and wildlife concentrations.
Pack Neutral-Coloured ClothingBeige, khaki and green clothing blends into the environment and is more practical for game drives than bright colours.
Dress in LayersEarly mornings are often cool, while afternoons can become warm, making lightweight layers the most comfortable option.
Wear Comfortable Walking ShoesIdeal for lodge grounds, cultural visits and optional walking activities.
Use Soft-Sided LuggageSoft bags are easier to fit into safari vehicles and are generally required on domestic safari flights, which usually have a 15 kg (33 lb) luggage limit.
Bring Sun ProtectionA wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm help protect against the African sun during game drives.
Carry Binoculars & a CameraBinoculars enhance wildlife viewing, while extra batteries, memory cards and a dust-proof camera bag help you capture unforgettable moments.
Pack Personal Medication

Carry prescription medicines, a small first-aid kit and any recommended malaria medication, as remote safari areas may have limited pharmacy services. Before travelling, check the latest travel health recommendations for Kenya from the CDC.
Arrange Comprehensive Travel InsuranceProtects against unexpected flight delays, medical emergencies, cancellations and lost baggage.
Keep Travel Documents AccessibleCarry your passport, Kenya eTA (where applicable), travel insurance details, flight confirmations and emergency contact information in your hand luggage.
Bring a Reusable Water BottleStaying hydrated is essential, particularly during warm afternoon game drives.
Pack a Light Jacket or Rain JacketEven during the dry season, early mornings and evenings can be cool, and brief showers are possible.

Expert Insight

The most enjoyable safaris are usually the best prepared. Packing light, wearing comfortable neutral clothing and booking your safari well in advance allows you to focus on the experience rather than logistics. Our local safari specialists also recommend choosing an itinerary that spends more time in the national parks than on the road, giving you the best opportunity to enjoy Kenya's remarkable wildlife.

What Is a Typical Day on a Kenya Safari Like? (2026/2027)

One of the questions we hear most often is, "What does a typical safari day look like?" While every itinerary is different, most safari days follow a rhythm that maximises wildlife viewing during the coolest hours of the day, when animals are most active. From sunrise game drives and bush breakfasts to breathtaking sunsets and evenings around the campfire, every day offers new wildlife encounters and unforgettable moments in Kenya's iconic national parks.

TimeYour Safari Experience

6:30–9:30 AMMorning Game Drive – Depart in your 4×4 safari vehicle to search for lions, leopards, elephants, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras and many other animals. Early morning is one of the best times to witness predators returning from a night of hunting.
9:30–10:30 AMBreakfast – Enjoy breakfast back at the lodge or a picnic breakfast in the bush, depending on your itinerary and park regulations.
10:30 AM–1:00 PMRelaxation or Optional Activities – Unwind at the lodge, enjoy the swimming pool, take in the scenery, review your wildlife photos or join optional experiences such as a nature walk or cultural visit where available.
1:00–2:00 PMLunch – Savour a freshly prepared lunch before taking a short break during the warmest part of the day, when many animals are resting.
3:30–6:30 PMAfternoon Game Drive – Return to the park to explore different areas and continue searching for wildlife. As temperatures cool, animals become more active, creating excellent opportunities for photography and memorable sightings.
6:30–7:00 PMSunset in the Bush – Watch the African sky transform into brilliant shades of orange and gold while enjoying the peaceful atmosphere that makes safari evenings so special.
7:30 PM onwardsDinner & Relaxation – Return to your lodge or tented camp for dinner, share stories of the day's sightings and relax around the campfire before a restful night's sleep under Africa's star-filled skies.

Guide Expert Insight

No two game drives are ever the same. Our guides adapt each drive based on recent wildlife sightings, fresh tracks, weather conditions and radio updates from other professional guides. If a leopard has been spotted in one area or elephants are moving towards a waterhole, your guide will adjust the route to maximise your chances of memorable wildlife encounters while always respecting park regulations and animal welfare.

A Few Things First-Time Travellers Often Notice

  • Early mornings offer some of the best wildlife sightings and beautiful soft light for photography.
  • Wildlife follows its own schedule, so every game drive is unique and full of surprises.
  • Most lodges provide generous meals, comfortable rooms and excellent hospitality between game drives.
  • You may see dozens of different animal species in a single day, from the Big Five to colourful birds and fascinating smaller wildlife.

What Our Safari Guides Look for During a Game Drive

7 Days Samburu Tour Beach Holiday Fly In

Every game drive is different, and there is no fixed route to finding wildlife. Our experienced Kenya safari guides combine years of field knowledge with careful observation to maximise your chances of unforgettable wildlife sightings while always respecting nature and park regulations.

What Our Guides Look ForWhy It Matters
Fresh Animal TracksTracks left on roads and trails help identify the direction and recent movement of wildlife.
Bird & Monkey Alarm CallsAnimals such as baboons, vervet monkeys and birds often warn each other when predators are nearby, helping guides locate lions, leopards and cheetahs.
Wildlife BehaviourChanges in animal behaviour can indicate that predators are hunting or that other wildlife is approaching.
Recent SightingsGuides communicate responsibly with other guides by radio to share recent wildlife sightings and movements within the park.
Water SourcesRivers, waterholes and marshes attract wildlife, especially during the dry season when animals gather to drink.
Weather ConditionsTemperature, rainfall and wind influence animal activity and determine where wildlife is most likely to be found.
Seasonal Wildlife MovementsWildlife moves throughout the year in search of grazing, water and breeding areas. Understanding these patterns improves viewing opportunities.
Habitat PreferencesDifferent species favour different environments, such as open plains, riverbanks, rocky outcrops or woodland.
Time of DayEarly mornings and late afternoons are often the most active periods for predators and many other species.
Ethical Wildlife ViewingOur guides always maintain a respectful distance, avoid disturbing wildlife and follow Kenya Wildlife Service regulations at all times.

Travel Expert Insight

Planning the right Kenya safari is about more than choosing a destination. Travel season, safari duration, park combinations, accommodation location and the pace of your itinerary all influence the quality of your experience. Our local safari specialists design every itinerary to minimise long transfer times, maximise game-drive opportunities and match your travel style, whether you're looking for a budget group safari, a private family adventure or a luxury fly-in experience.

We also recommend allowing enough time in each national park rather than trying to visit too many destinations in one trip. Spending an extra night in the right location often leads to more rewarding wildlife encounters than covering greater distances. With careful planning and local expertise, every safari becomes more comfortable, more enjoyable and far more memorable.

Great experience touring with East Africa Jungle

We visited Kenya and Tanzania in August with East Africa Jungle in a group of 8 friends. I had an experience that exceeded my expectations. The trip was planned by an organizer of our group 5-6 months before the visit through emails with John Peter who had replied to our frequent questions patiently and was always willing to accommodate our requests. Our guide/driver Ken is very experienced and skillful in finding the best spots for viewing animals. We saw almost all animals we expected to see. The best part of the trip was being able to see wildebeest migration, having seen more than four separate river crossings in Masai Mara and Serengeti. I highly recommend touring with East Africa Jungle

14 Day Kenya Wildlife Adventure Private Tour - 5/5

My partner and I booked a private safari with AJS for the 14 Day Kenya Wildlife Adventure which saw us visiting the following parks Tsavo East x2, Amboseli x2, Aberdare x1, Samburu x2, Lake Nakuru x1, Maasai Mara x3, Lake Naivasha x1 as well as a night in Nairobi. We organised everything through John Peter who responded patiently to all of my questions (and I asked a lot!), modifying the itinerary to our needs and while we were in Kenya, helping us to locate our taxi driver and upgrading one of the rooms in the Maasai Mara which we really appreciated! Our guide/driver was Lawrence and he was incredible, getting us close to all the animals, always on the radio to let others know what we had found and getting good information back. Aside from black rhinos, there was nothing that we didn’t see from all the main animals, we saw everything multiple times and every time it blew our minds completely. Every park had its own unique characteristics and nothing was the same. All of the park rangers were so friendly and knowledgable, as well as all of the boat operators and guides. It was so hard saying goodbye. All of the rooms and facilities in our accomodation were beyond what we expected and the food alone is a reason to return, we were spoiled! Our van did break down a few times during the trip which unfortunately meant some of our plans changed, however this was out of Lawrence’s hands and led to some great experiences that wouldn’t have happened otherwise. We will cherish this trip forever and thank EAJ so much for providing us with such an amazing experience in Kenya!

14-Day Kenya Masai Mara /Amboseli/Samburu/Aberdare/Tsavo - 5/5

We are a group of 4 friends taking the 14 days private safari, and had a wonderful time. The communication with John was prompt and full of useful and accurate information. Our guide Lawrence impressed us throughout the whole journey with his excellent spirit.

We chose to upgrade our lodges at Amboseli and Masai Mara. Looking back, we should have probably picked a different lodge inside the Amboseli park, so we don't have to rush out of the park before it's getting dark.

We will be more than happy to do business with EAJ again, probably during the migration season and to cover Tanzania the next time.

Questions

1. What is the best Kenya safari tour from Nairobi?

The best safari depends on your travel style, budget and available time. A 3-day Masai Mara safari is ideal for short trips, while 6 to 10-day itineraries covering Amboseli, Lake Nakuru and the Masai Mara provide a more comprehensive wildlife experience. If you're visiting between July and October, consider an itinerary that includes the Great Wildebeest Migration.

2. How many days do I need for a Kenya safari from Nairobi?

A minimum of three days is recommended to experience the Masai Mara. However, 5 to 8-day safaris allow you to explore multiple national parks such as Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, Samburu and Ol Pejeta Conservancy while enjoying a more relaxed pace.

3. What is included in a Kenya safari tour from Nairobi?

Most safari packages include accommodation, meals as specified in the itinerary, park entrance fees, transportation in a 4×4 safari Land Cruiser or safari van, game drives, bottled drinking water and the services of a professional English-speaking safari guide.

4. How much does a Kenya safari from Nairobi cost?

Prices vary depending on the duration, accommodation standard and whether you choose a private or group safari. Budget group safaris generally start from around USD 250 per person per day, while luxury private safaris can exceed USD 1,000 per person per day.

5. What is the best time to visit Kenya for a safari?

Kenya offers excellent wildlife viewing throughout the year. The dry seasons from June to October and January to March are particularly popular, while July to October is the best period to witness the Great Wildebeest Migration in the Masai Mara.

6. Which national parks are included in your Kenya safari tours?

Our itineraries visit some of Kenya's most iconic destinations, including the Masai Mara National Reserve, Amboseli National Park, Lake Nakuru National Park, Samburu National Reserve, Tsavo East, Tsavo West, Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Aberdare National Park and Meru National Park.

7. Can I see the Big Five on a Kenya safari?

Yes. Kenya is one of Africa's best destinations to see the Big Five—lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. The Masai Mara, Amboseli, Lake Nakuru and Ol Pejeta Conservancy all offer excellent opportunities for Big Five sightings.

8. Are Kenya safari tours suitable for families?

Yes. Many of our safari itineraries are designed for families and include family-friendly lodges, flexible game drives and accommodation suitable for children of different ages.

9. Is a private safari better than a group safari?

Private safaris provide greater flexibility, personalised itineraries and exclusive use of the vehicle, while group safaris are a more affordable option and allow travellers to share the experience with others.

10. Which safari vehicle do you use?

Private safaris are conducted in custom-built 4×4 Toyota Land Cruisers with pop-up roofs for wildlife viewing, while selected group departures may use comfortable safari vans.

11. Can I customise my Kenya safari itinerary?

Absolutely. Our safari specialists can tailor your itinerary by adjusting the duration, accommodation, parks visited and optional activities to match your interests and budget

12. Are park entrance fees included?

Yes. Unless stated otherwise, all national park and conservancy entrance fees listed in your itinerary are included in the safari price.

13. What wildlife can I expect to see?

Depending on the parks you visit, you may encounter lions, elephants, leopards, buffalo, rhinos, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, wildebeest, hyenas and hundreds of bird species.

14. Can I add a hot air balloon safari?

Yes. A sunrise hot air balloon safari over the Masai Mara can be added to many itineraries and includes a champagne-style bush breakfast after landing.

15. Do your safari tours start and end in Nairobi?

Yes. Most of our Kenya safari packages begin with hotel or airport pickup in Nairobi and conclude with a return transfer to your hotel or the airport.

16. Is Kenya safe for safari holidays?

Yes. Kenya is one of Africa's leading safari destinations. Travelling with an experienced guide, following park regulations and observing normal travel precautions helps ensure a safe and enjoyable safari.

17. What should I pack for a Kenya safari?

Pack lightweight neutral-coloured clothing, comfortable walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, binoculars, a camera, personal medication, travel documents and a light jacket for early morning game drives.

18. Do I need a visa to visit Kenya?

Most international travellers require a Kenya Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) before arrival. Requirements vary by nationality, so travellers should check the latest entry requirements before departure.

19. When is the Great Wildebeest Migration in Kenya?

The migration generally reaches the Masai Mara between July and October, although wildlife movements vary each year depending on rainfall and grazing conditions.

20. Why book your Kenya safari with East Africa Jungle?

Every itinerary is designed to maximise wildlife viewing while providing a comfortable and memorable safari experience.
