9 Days Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar – Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arusha to Ngorongoro — Begin Your Private Safari

After breakfast, meet your safari driver-guide at your Arusha hotel for a briefing before departing in your private 4×4 Land Cruiser. Travel through northern Tanzania’s countryside toward the Ngorongoro Highlands, with comfort stops along the way.

Arrive at Ngorongoro Lodge Meliá Collection, check in and enjoy lunch. Spend the afternoon relaxing and taking in the crater views before dinner and your first overnight stay.

Arrival arrangements: We recommend arriving in Tanzania the previous day so you can begin the safari comfortably from Arusha. Kilimanjaro Airport pickup and a pre-safari Arusha hotel night can be arranged at an additional cost unless expressly included in your quotation. Same-day airport arrivals require a revised pickup plan based on your flight time.

Pickup: Your Arusha hotel; time confirmed before departure
Destination: Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Accommodation: Ngorongoro Lodge Meliá Collection
Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Approximate transfer time: Allow 4–5 hours from your Arusha hotel to Ngorongoro Lodge Meliá Collection, depending on your pickup location, comfort stops, road conditions and conservation-area entry procedures.

Day 2: Full-Day Ngorongoro Crater Safari

After an early breakfast, descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a rewarding day of private game viewing.

The crater's varied habitats support an impressive concentration of wildlife. During your game drive, look for lions, elephants, buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas and numerous antelope species. Ngorongoro is also one of the places in northern Tanzania where visitors may have an opportunity to see the endangered black rhino, although wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed.

Enjoy a picnic lunch at a designated site on the crater floor before continuing your afternoon game drive.

Later, ascend from the crater and return to your luxury lodge for dinner and a second overnight stay.

The landscape gradually opens into the vast Serengeti plains as you travel toward your luxury accommodation. Wildlife viewing begins as you enter the park, turning today's transfer into an en-route game drive.

Look for giraffes, elephants, zebras, wildebeest and gazelles, while predators such as lions, cheetahs and leopards may also be encountered.

Arrive at your premium luxury Serengeti lodge in the afternoon or early evening and settle in for a three-night stay surrounded by the wilderness.

Wake up in the heart of the Serengeti and enjoy breakfast before setting out on a full-day private Serengeti safari.

With your own guide and 4×4 Land Cruiser, the day can be adapted to wildlife movements and your interests. Explore the Serengeti's grasslands, woodland and riverine habitats in search of lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, hippos and large herds of plains game.

Depending on the season and location of the herds, you may also encounter concentrations of wildebeest and zebra associated with the Great Migration. Migration movements vary throughout the year, and specific sightings or river crossings cannot be guaranteed.

Return to your lodge after the day's game viewing for dinner and relaxation overlooking the Serengeti landscape.

Activity: Full-Day Private Game Drive

Day 5: Second Full-Day Serengeti Safari

Your third night in the Serengeti gives you another full day to explore without rushing onward to the next destination.

You may begin with an early morning game drive when wildlife is particularly active, or enjoy a more relaxed breakfast before heading into the park. Your private guide will plan the day's route according to recent wildlife activity, seasonal conditions and your interests.

Spend the day searching for predators, observing herds on the plains and enjoying the landscapes that make the Serengeti one of Tanzania's signature safari destinations.

For an additional cost, today can also be enhanced with an optional Serengeti hot-air balloon safari, followed by further game viewing with your private guide.

Return to Four Seasons for your final evening in the Serengeti.

Board your included scheduled Serengeti–Zanzibar flight. The service is shared with other passengers and may make intermediate stops; departure time, routing and baggage allowance will be confirmed in your flight documents.

On arrival at Zanzibar Airport, your private driver will meet you and transfer you to Zuri Zanzibar on Kendwa Beach. Settle into your accommodation and enjoy the remaining afternoon or evening at leisure, depending on your arrival time.

Wake up on the tropical island of Zanzibar with the day available for relaxation.

Enjoy the beach, swim in the warm Indian Ocean, relax beside the pool or simply enjoy the facilities of your luxury resort.

Travelers wanting to explore beyond the resort can arrange optional Zanzibar experiences such as snorkeling, diving, a sunset cruise or other private island excursions.

After several days of safari game drives, this unhurried beach day provides time to relax and enjoy a completely different side of Tanzania.

Best Time for a Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar Holiday 2026-2028

This holiday can be enjoyed throughout much of the year. Choose your dates according to wildlife interests, beach weather and budget.

Travel PeriodWhat to Expect
January–MarchCalving-season and predator-viewing opportunities in Southern Serengeti and Ndutu. A change from the standard Central Serengeti lodge may be recommended.
April–MayGreen landscapes, fewer visitors and potential accommodation offers. Heavier rainfall makes safari and Zanzibar beach conditions less predictable.
June–OctoberGenerally drier conditions, rewarding wildlife viewing and favourable Zanzibar beach weather. A strong choice for the standard itinerary.
July–OctoberNorthern Serengeti is usually preferable for travellers targeting Mara River migration activity. A northern camp would replace or supplement the standard Serengeti stay.
November–DecemberShort rains, greener scenery and seasonal herd movements. Christmas and New Year bring greater demand and higher rates.

Migration planning: This package uses Four Seasons Safari Lodge in Central Serengeti. If calving or river crossings are your priority, we can adjust accommodation and routing at a revised price. Migration locations, wildlife sightings and crossings cannot be guaranteed.

Wildlife You May See on This Tanzania Safari

Explore Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park in your private 4×4 Land Cruiser, with opportunities to see:

  • Big cats: Lions, elusive leopards and cheetahs.
  • Large mammals: Elephants, buffalo and hippos.

  • Black rhino: Ngorongoro Crater offers an opportunity to search for this rare member of the Big Five.
  • Other wildlife: Hyenas, warthogs, jackals, baboons and diverse birdlife.

Your guide helps interpret animal behaviour, tracks and habitats. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, and Great Migration herd locations vary with rainfall and seasonal conditions.

Travel & Practical Information

Planning ahead helps make your 9 Days Premium Luxury Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar as comfortable and seamless as possible. The information below covers the main arrival, baggage, visa, clothing and travel considerations for this safari-and-beach journey.

Arrival Airport

The safari begins in Arusha, the main gateway to Tanzania's Northern Safari Circuit.

International travelers commonly arrive through Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). A private airport transfer to Arusha or directly toward the first safari destination can be arranged according to your international flight schedule.

If you are already in Tanzania, domestic connections into Arusha or Kilimanjaro can also be incorporated into your itinerary.

Departure Airport

The itinerary finishes in Zanzibar.

On Day 9, you will receive a private transfer from your beach resort to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) for your onward or international flight.

This means you do not need to return to Arusha after the Zanzibar portion unless required by your international flight arrangements.

Safari Luggage

For the road-safari portion, we recommend packing light and using practical luggage that can be easily handled in a safari vehicle.

A soft-sided duffel bag is generally more convenient than a large rigid suitcase, particularly because this itinerary includes a bush flight from the Serengeti to Zanzibar.

A small day bag is also useful for carrying your camera, binoculars, documents, sunscreen and other items required during game drives.

Bush-Flight Baggage

Small safari aircraft have more restrictive baggage allowances than international airlines.

For example, Coastal Air currently permits a standard maximum of 15 kg (33 lb) per passenger in total, including hand luggage, and recommends soft-sided bags. Exact allowances depend on the airline operating your confirmed Serengeti–Zanzibar flight.

We will provide the applicable baggage allowance with your final flight details before travel.

Guests carrying specialist photographic equipment or additional luggage should inform us in advance so suitable arrangements can be explored.

Tanzania Visa

Visa requirements depend on your nationality.

Tanzania operates an official electronic visa system covering travel to Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar. Travelers who require a visa should check the latest requirements before departure and apply through the official Tanzania Immigration Services system.

Your passport should generally have at least six months' validity and at least one unused visa page when applying.

Because immigration requirements can change, always check the current requirements applicable to your passport before travel.

Travel Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended for this safari.

Your policy should ideally provide appropriate cover for:

  • Medical emergencies

  • Emergency evacuation

  • Trip cancellation or interruption

  • Flight disruption

  • Lost, delayed or damaged baggage

  • Safari and planned recreational activities

Guests should confirm that their policy provides suitable cover for all activities they intend to undertake.

What to Wear on Safari

Safari clothing should be comfortable, practical and suitable for changing temperatures.

Lightweight, breathable clothing in neutral colors works well during daytime game drives. Early mornings and evenings can feel considerably cooler, particularly around the Ngorongoro Highlands, so bring warmer layers.

Useful items include:

  • Lightweight shirts and trousers

  • Warm fleece or light jacket

  • Comfortable closed walking shoes

  • Sandals or casual footwear for the lodge and Zanzibar

  • Wide-brimmed hat

  • Sunglasses

  • Swimwear

  • Sunscreen

  • Light rain jacket

  • Insect repellent

Avoid overpacking, especially because of the baggage restrictions on safari aircraft.

Health Considerations

Travelers should seek personalized medical advice from a qualified travel-health professional well before departure, particularly regarding recommended vaccinations, malaria precautions and any personal medical requirements.

Carry sufficient quantities of prescription medication in your hand luggage, preferably in its original packaging, together with relevant documentation where required.

Stay hydrated during safari, use appropriate sun protection and follow your doctor's advice regarding mosquito-bite prevention.

Before You Travel

Final travel documents will include your confirmed accommodation, transfers, domestic flight details and other important arrangements.

Visa rules, airline baggage policies, health requirements and government regulations can change, so these should be reconfirmed before departure.
