Why Choose This Tanzania Group Safari?

This 5-day Tanzania group safari combines three of the Northern Circuit's most rewarding wildlife destinations in one well-paced itinerary, with extra time in the Serengeti and the value of sharing safari costs with other travellers.

Three Iconic Tanzania Safari Destinations

Explore Tarangire National Park, Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater on one safari, combining varied landscapes and excellent wildlife-viewing opportunities.

Two Nights in the Serengeti

Spend two nights in Central Serengeti, giving you more time in the park instead of treating the Serengeti as a short overnight stop.

Small Group Safari Experience

Travel with approximately 6–7 guests in a shared 4×4 Land Cruiser, offering a more affordable way to experience Tanzania's Northern Circuit.

Comfortable Mid-Range Accommodation

Stay in carefully selected mid-range lodges and tented camps, including accommodation in the Serengeti and the Karatu/Ngorongoro area.

Scheduled Departures from Arusha

Join scheduled departures from Arusha on Monday, Friday and Saturday, subject to availability and departure confirmation.

5-Day Tanzania Safari Route

Your 5-day Tanzania group safari follows a classic Northern Circuit route from Arusha through Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro before returning to Arusha.

Day 1: Arusha → Tarangire National Park → Karatu
Day 2: Karatu → Ngorongoro Highlands → Serengeti National Park
Day 3: Full-Day Serengeti National Park
Day 4: Serengeti National Park → Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater → Arusha

Route: Arusha → Tarangire → Karatu → Serengeti → Ngorongoro → Arusha

The itinerary balances travel time with game viewing, including two nights in the Serengeti and dedicated game drives in all three major wildlife areas.

Detailed 5 Days Tarangire, Serengeti & Ngorongoro Group Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arusha → Tarangire National Park → Karatu

Your 5 Days Tanzania Group Safari begins in Arusha, where you will meet your safari driver-guide and fellow travellers before departing for Tarangire National Park.

After entering the park, begin your first game drive through a landscape characterised by ancient baobab trees, open savannah and the Tarangire River. The river and surrounding habitats support a remarkable variety of wildlife, and Tarangire is particularly well known for its elephants.

During the game drive, look for elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, impalas, warthogs and, with some luck, predators such as lions and leopards. Birdlife is also exceptionally diverse.

Enjoy a picnic lunch during the safari before continuing your afternoon game drive. Later, leave Tarangire and travel towards Karatu for dinner and your overnight stay.

Destination: Tarangire National Park
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Mid-range lodge in Karatu

Day 2: Karatu → Serengeti National Park via Ngorongoro Highlands

After breakfast, depart Karatu and travel through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area towards Serengeti National Park.

The journey takes you through the Ngorongoro Highlands before descending towards the vast plains of the Serengeti. As you continue towards Central Serengeti, the drive gradually becomes part of the day's wildlife-viewing experience.

Enter Serengeti National Park and enjoy an en-route game drive towards the Seronera area. Central Serengeti supports wildlife throughout the year and is particularly renowned for its resident big cats.

Depending on wildlife movements, you may encounter lions, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hyenas and various antelope species. Leopards and cheetahs may also be seen, although sightings are never guaranteed.

Continue to your tented safari camp for dinner and your first night in the Serengeti.

Destination: Central Serengeti National Park
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Mid-range tented camp in Central Serengeti

Day 3: Full-Day Game Drive in Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, spend a full day exploring Serengeti National Park, giving you the most extensive wildlife-viewing day of the safari.

Your driver-guide will plan the day's game drive according to current wildlife movements and local conditions. The Central Serengeti's mix of open grasslands, rocky kopjes, riverine areas and acacia woodland provides habitat for an exceptional variety of wildlife.

Search for lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, hippos, hyenas, zebras, wildebeest and numerous antelope species. The Serengeti is also home to hundreds of bird species.

Depending on the season and location of the herds, you may also encounter concentrations of wildebeest and zebra associated with the wider Great Migration. Migration sightings depend on seasonal rainfall and wildlife movements and therefore cannot be guaranteed.

A picnic lunch allows you to maximise your time inside the park before continuing with afternoon game viewing.

Return to your camp in Central Serengeti for dinner and your second overnight stay.

Destination: Serengeti National Park
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Mid-range tented camp in Central Serengeti

Day 4: Serengeti National Park → Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Start the morning with breakfast followed by another game drive in the Serengeti as you gradually make your way towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

The morning provides another opportunity to search for wildlife you may not have encountered during the previous day's safari. Early hours can be particularly rewarding as many animals are active before temperatures rise.

After leaving the Serengeti, continue towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, travelling through changing landscapes from the open Serengeti plains towards the crater highlands.

Arrive at your accommodation in the Ngorongoro/Karatu area for dinner and overnight, ready for the following morning's Ngorongoro Crater safari.

Destination: Serengeti → Ngorongoro/Karatu
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Mid-range lodge

Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater Game Drive → Arusha

After an early breakfast, travel to the Ngorongoro Crater and descend approximately 600 metres to the crater floor for your final major game drive.

The crater's grasslands, wetlands, woodland and permanent water sources support a high concentration of wildlife within a relatively compact area.

During your Ngorongoro Crater game drive, look for buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, elephants, hyenas and lions. The crater is also one of the better places on Tanzania's Northern Circuit to search for the endangered black rhino, although sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Enjoy a picnic lunch at a designated site before continuing your game drive and later ascending the crater wall.

After completing your Ngorongoro safari, drive back to Arusha, where your 5-day Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro group safari comes to an end.

Destination: Ngorongoro Crater → Arusha
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
Accommodation: Not included – end of safari

How Our Tanzania Group Joining Safari Works

Our 5 Days Tanzania Group Safari is designed for travellers who want to explore Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro while sharing the safari vehicle and operating costs with other guests.

Join as a Solo Traveller, Couple or Small Group

You do not need to organise your own group. Solo travellers, couples, friends and small groups can reserve individual seats and join other travellers on a confirmed scheduled departure from Arusha.

Small-Group 4×4 Safari

Travel in a shared 4×4 safari Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, with approximately 6–7 travellers per vehicle. Your professional Tanzania safari driver-guide manages the route, game drives and daily safari programme for the group.

Fixed 5-Day Safari Route

All guests follow the same scheduled itinerary:

Arusha → Tarangire → Serengeti → Ngorongoro → Arusha

Because this is a group-joining safari, departure times and daily game-drive arrangements are coordinated for the whole group.

Accommodation

The safari includes mid-range lodges and tented camps according to the published itinerary. Travellers booking together can request twin or double accommodation, while a single supplement may apply to solo travellers requesting a private room or tent.

Luggage

Soft-sided luggage is recommended because storage space in shared safari vehicles is limited. If you are travelling with additional luggage, please advise us before departure.

Scheduled Group Departure Days

Our 5-day Tanzania group safari from Arusha is scheduled to depart every Monday, Friday and Saturday, subject to seat and accommodation availability.

Departure DaySafari DurationStart & End Point
Monday5 Days / 4 NightsArusha
Friday5 Days / 4 NightsArusha
Saturday5 Days / 4 NightsArusha

Solo travellers can request an individual seat on any confirmed departure without organising their own group.

Important: Group departures and available seats are subject to confirmation at the time of booking. Please confirm your safari departure before purchasing non-refundable connecting travel arrangements.

Best Time for a 5 Days Tarangire, Serengeti & Ngorongoro Safari

This 5-day Tanzania group safari can be enjoyed year-round. The best time to travel depends on the wildlife experience, landscapes and weather you prefer, while the location of the Great Migration changes according to seasonal rainfall and herd movements.

Travel PeriodWhat to Expect
January–FebruaryGreen landscapes, predator activity and the wider Serengeti calving season
March–MayGreen season, fewer visitors and periods of heavier rainfall
June–OctoberDry season, excellent general wildlife viewing and particularly rewarding conditions in Tarangire
November–DecemberShort rains, greener landscapes, good birdlife and year-round resident wildlife

June to October – Classic Wildlife Viewing

The dry season from June to October is an excellent time for this itinerary. Vegetation becomes thinner and wildlife often concentrates around reliable water sources, making animals easier to locate.

Tarangire can be particularly rewarding during this period as elephants and other wildlife gather around the Tarangire River and surrounding water sources.

January to February – Calving Season

January and February coincide with the wider Great Migration calving season, when large wildebeest herds are generally concentrated in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu ecosystem.

Important: This standard 5-day itinerary stays in Central Serengeti rather than Ndutu. Travellers whose main objective is to experience the calving herds should choose a dedicated Ndutu calving safari designed around the southern Serengeti and Ndutu ecosystem.

March to May – Green Season

The March-to-May period generally brings greener landscapes, fewer visitors and increased rainfall. Wildlife viewing continues across Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro, although rain can affect road conditions and daily game-drive plans.

November to December – Short Rains

November and December generally bring the shorter rains, creating greener landscapes and good conditions for birdlife. Wildlife viewing remains rewarding, although weather patterns and rainfall vary from year to year.

What About the Great Migration?

The Great Wildebeest Migration is a year-round movement through different parts of the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem rather than an event that occurs in one fixed location.

Because this safari spends its Serengeti nights in Central Serengeti, migration sightings depend on the location of the herds during your travel dates and cannot be guaranteed.

Travellers specifically planning around the Ndutu calving season or northern Serengeti Mara River crossings should choose a seasonal migration itinerary designed around those areas.

Wildlife You May See

Tarangire National Park: Elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, impalas, warthogs and a variety of predators and birdlife. Tarangire is particularly known for elephants and its baobab-dotted landscapes.

Serengeti National Park: Lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, wildebeest, zebras, spotted hyenas, hippos, jackals and numerous antelope species. Seasonal concentrations of Great Migration herds may also be encountered depending on wildlife movements.

Ngorongoro Crater: Lions, buffaloes, wildebeest, zebras, hippos, elephants, hyenas, gazelles and, occasionally, black rhinos. Ngorongoro is one of the better areas on Tanzania's Northern Circuit to search for black rhino, although sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Can I See the Big Five?

The route provides opportunities to search for lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and black rhino. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.

10. Will I see the Great Migration?

It is possible, but Great Migration sightings cannot be guaranteed on this standard Central Serengeti itinerary.

The herds move through different parts of the Serengeti ecosystem throughout the year. Travellers specifically interested in the Ndutu calving season or Mara River crossings should consider a seasonal migration itinerary designed for those areas.

11. Is this group safari suitable for children?

Families can request this safari, but parents should consider the shared vehicle, fixed departure schedule, long driving sections and extended game drives before booking with young children.

For families wanting more flexibility, a private safari is generally the better option.

12. Can I combine this safari with Zanzibar?

Yes. This 5-day itinerary can easily be combined with a Zanzibar beach holiday. We can arrange additional accommodation, airport transfers and flights according to your preferred beach stay.

13. Can I upgrade this group safari to a private safar

Yes. The Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro itinerary can also be arranged as a private safari with your own 4×4 Land Cruiser and dedicated driver-guide.

A private safari provides greater flexibility with departure times, game drives, accommodation and itinerary adjustments.
