Detailed 5-Day Southern Tanzania Safari Itinerary – Nyerere & Mikumi
Day 1: Dar es Salaam to Nyerere National Park – Rufiji River Boat Safari
Your 5 Days Southern Tanzania Safari begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel or agreed meeting point in Dar es Salaam. Meet your professional safari driver-guide before travelling southwest towards Nyerere National Park, formerly part of the Selous Game Reserve. The journey generally takes approximately 5–7 hours, depending on road conditions, traffic and the location of your accommodation.
Along the way, enjoy changing landscapes, rural villages and views of Tanzania's countryside. Your guide will explain the region's wildlife habitats, local communities and conservation efforts as you approach the Nyerere ecosystem.
Arrive at your safari lodge or tented camp for lunch, subject to your arrival time, followed by a short rest.
Later in the afternoon, enjoy a guided Rufiji River boat safari, where you may encounter hippos, Nile crocodiles, African fish eagles, kingfishers and other waterbirds. The river offers excellent opportunities for nature photography, particularly in the softer afternoon light.
Return to your accommodation for dinner and relaxation, surrounded by the sounds of the African wilderness.
Accommodation: Nyerere safari lodge or tented camp
Meals: Lunch and dinner
Main Activity: Rufiji River boat safari, subject to operating conditions
Day 2: Full-Day Nyerere National Park Game Drive – Wildlife & Wilderness
After an early breakfast, depart for a full-day game drive in Nyerere National Park, one of Tanzania's most extensive protected wilderness areas. Your experienced safari guide will navigate established wildlife-viewing tracks through miombo woodlands, open grasslands, seasonal lakes and riverine habitats.
Nyerere supports a remarkable diversity of wildlife, including African elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, impalas, wildebeest and several predator species. With patience and favourable conditions, you may encounter lions, spotted hyenas or even the elusive African wild dog. Wildlife sightings remain unpredictable, making every game drive a unique experience.
Your guide will select suitable viewing areas based on recent animal movements, seasonal water availability and park conditions. Stop at an authorised picnic location to enjoy your packed lunch while appreciating the surrounding natural environment.
Continue exploring different habitats during the afternoon, looking for animals gathering near water sources or resting beneath shaded vegetation.
Return to your lodge before evening for a well-earned shower, dinner and overnight stay. The day's unhurried exploration provides an opportunity to appreciate Nyerere's expansive landscapes and quieter safari atmosphere.
Accommodation: Nyerere safari lodge or tented camp
Meals: Breakfast, picnic lunch and dinner
Main Activity: Full-day Nyerere game drive
Day 3: Nyerere to Mikumi National Park – Scenic Southern Tanzania Transfer
Enjoy breakfast at your accommodation before checking out and beginning the overland journey towards Mikumi National Park, another remarkable wildlife destination in Tanzania's southern safari circuit.
Today's transfer is primarily a travel day, allowing you to experience the changing landscapes between the Nyerere ecosystem and the Morogoro region. Depending on the selected route, you may pass through rural settlements, agricultural areas and stretches of woodland that reveal a different side of Tanzania beyond its national parks.
The drive can take approximately 7–10 hours or longer, depending on the lodge locations, route, weather and road conditions. Some routes involve rough or seasonally affected roads, so your driver-guide will assess the most practical and safe journey before departure.
Enjoy a packed lunch or a stop at a suitable restaurant along the way. Short breaks will be arranged when practical for refreshments and stretching.
Arrive at your accommodation in the Mikumi area, ideally before nightfall, and settle in for dinner and relaxation.
No game drive is scheduled today, ensuring that the itinerary does not promise activities that may be unrealistic after a long transfer.

Day 4: Full-Day Mikumi National Park Safari – Mkata Floodplain Game Drives
Wake up early for breakfast before setting out on a full-day wildlife safari in Mikumi National Park, famous for its open savannah landscapes and the expansive Mkata Floodplain.
Often compared with the plains of the Serengeti, Mikumi's grasslands provide excellent opportunities to observe wildlife in relatively open surroundings. Look out for giraffes browsing acacia trees, elephants moving between feeding areas, zebras grazing alongside wildebeest and buffaloes gathering in herds.
Your professional guide will explore different wildlife habitats while sharing insights into animal behaviour, conservation and the ecological importance of the park.
Mikumi is also home to lions, hippos, warthogs and numerous antelope species. Birdwatchers may enjoy sightings of rollers, hornbills, eagles and other resident or migratory birds, depending on the season.
Stop for a picnic lunch at an authorised location before continuing your afternoon game drive. Your guide will adjust the route according to wildlife activity, weather and available daylight.
As the afternoon progresses, enjoy the changing colours of the savannah before returning to your accommodation for dinner and your final safari night.

The drive generally takes approximately 5–7 hours, although traffic, roadworks and travel conditions can extend the journey. Your guide will arrange appropriate stops for refreshments, rest and lunch along the route.
As you travel east, reflect on the contrasting landscapes explored during your safari, from the riverine wilderness of Nyerere to the open grasslands of Mikumi. Each destination offers a different perspective on Tanzania's rich natural heritage.
Upon reaching Dar es Salaam, your driver-guide will transfer you to your hotel or an agreed drop-off location. Airport drop-off can also be arranged when compatible with your flight schedule.
For travellers attending AFCON 2027, this return journey provides an opportunity to continue your football holiday or prepare for onward travel.
We recommend avoiding tightly scheduled international flights on the same afternoon, as unexpected road delays may occur.

Safari Transport & Dar es Salaam Pickup Arrangements
Your Southern Tanzania private safari from Dar es Salaam includes overland transport in a dedicated 4×4 Land Cruiser with a professional English-speaking safari driver-guide. The vehicle provides elevated wildlife viewing and a pop-up roof for photography during game drives.
Pickup can be arranged from your hotel, Julius Nyerere International Airport or another agreed location in Dar es Salaam, depending on arrival schedules.
An early departure is recommended on Day 1 to allow sufficient travel time to Nyerere and the planned afternoon boat safari. The transfer between Nyerere and Mikumi requires a full travel day, with road conditions influencing journey times.
On Day 5, your guide returns you to Dar es Salaam for hotel or airport drop-off. Travellers should allow generous time for onward flights, particularly during AFCON 2027.
Wildlife You Can See in Nyerere & Mikumi National Parks
Southern Tanzania offers rewarding wildlife encounters across the contrasting ecosystems of Nyerere and Mikumi National Parks. Nyerere's extensive woodlands, grasslands and river systems support African elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, hippos and crocodiles. Predators include lions, leopards, spotted hyenas and the endangered African wild dog, although sightings of elusive species are less predictable.
In Mikumi National Park, the open Mkata Floodplain provides excellent opportunities to observe grazing zebras, wildebeest, impalas and giraffes. Elephants and buffaloes are also regularly encountered, while lions may be spotted resting in shaded areas or moving through the grasslands.
Birdwatchers can look for African fish eagles, hornbills, kingfishers, herons and numerous other species.
Wildlife sightings vary with rainfall, vegetation, water availability and animal movements. Your experienced safari guide will help identify wildlife and interpret animal behaviour, but sightings of particular species are never guaranteed.
Rufiji River Boat Safari Experience in Nyerere
A Rufiji River boat safari offers a memorable alternative to traditional vehicle-based wildlife viewing in Southern Tanzania. Travelling aboard a guided safari boat, you can observe the river's wetlands, channels and surrounding vegetation while searching for hippos, Nile crocodiles, African fish eagles, kingfishers and other aquatic wildlife.
The excursion is generally arranged in the afternoon, when softer sunlight creates favourable conditions for photography. Your boat guide will explain the river ecosystem and maintain appropriate distances from wildlife.
Boat safari operations depend on water levels, weather, river currents and local safety regulations. During periods of heavy rainfall, excursions may be restricted, rescheduled or cancelled.
For this five-day itinerary, the activity is planned for Day 1, subject to arrival time and safe operating conditions.
Best Time to Visit Southern Tanzania – Nyerere & Mikumi Safari
The best time for a Southern Tanzania safari is generally June to October, when dry-season conditions improve wildlife visibility in Nyerere and Mikumi National Parks. As vegetation becomes thinner and seasonal water sources diminish, animals are often easier to observe near rivers, lakes and waterholes.
June and July 2027 are particularly attractive for travellers combining a safari with AFCON 2027, offering favourable conditions for game drives and Rufiji River excursions. The greener months bring lush scenery and rewarding birdwatching, although heavy rainfall can affect road access and lodge operations.
Southern Tanzania Safari Seasons 2027–2028
Travel Period | Weather & Wildlife Conditions | Safari Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
January–February | Warm, green landscapes; good birdwatching | Good for photography and birdlife |
March–May | Long rains; muddy roads and possible lodge closures | Less suitable for this overland itinerary |
June–July | Beginning of dry season; improving wildlife visibility | Excellent for AFCON 2027 safari travellers |
August–October | Drier vegetation; wildlife gathers near water | Excellent for classic game drives |
November–December | Short rains; greener landscapes and seasonal birdlife | Good with flexible travel arrangements |

For supporters attending matches in Dar es Salaam, this private safari offers an opportunity to explore Southern Tanzania before or after their football commitments. The itinerary begins and ends in Dar es Salaam, with overland transfers to both national parks.
Travellers arriving from other tournament host cities should plan suitable regional flights and allow sufficient time for airport transfers, immigration and possible travel delays.
We recommend allocating five complete days for the safari and avoiding match-day departures or tightly scheduled international connections.
June and July also coincide with Southern Tanzania's early dry season, making this an attractive period for wildlife viewing and outdoor exploration.
