Is 2 Days Enough for Tarangire and Ngorongoro?

Yes, 2 days is enough to visit Tarangire National Park and Ngorongoro Crater if you have limited time in Northern Tanzania. The itinerary works particularly well from Arusha, allowing you to spend the first day exploring Tarangire’s baobab landscapes, large elephant herds and diverse wildlife before staying overnight in the Karatu or Ngorongoro area.

On the second day, you can descend into Ngorongoro Crater for an extended game drive, where you may encounter lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas and, with luck, the endangered black rhino. After the crater game drive and picnic lunch, the safari returns to Arusha.

A 2-day Tarangire and Ngorongoro safari is fast-paced but rewarding. Travellers who prefer a slower itinerary, longer game drives or additional destinations should consider a 3- or 4-day Northern Tanzania safari instead.

2 Days Tarangire & Ngorongoro Safari Price 2026/2027

The price of this 2-day Tarangire and Ngorongoro safari from Arusha depends primarily on the number of travellers sharing the private safari vehicle, travel season and accommodation selected. The safari is operated in a private 4×4 safari Land Cruiser with a professional Tanzania safari guide.

Number of TravellersEstimated Price Per Person (USD)
1 PersonUSD 850
2 PeopleUSD 620 per person
3 PeopleUSD 540 per person
4 PeopleUSD 490 per person
5 PeopleUSD 455 per person
6 PeopleFrom USD 430 per person

Estimated prices are based on a private safari, standard mid-range accommodation and current typical safari operating costs. Final rates may vary according to travel dates, accommodation availability, park and conservation fee changes, vehicle arrangements and requested upgrades.

What Affects the Safari Price?

Number of travellers: Because the private 4×4 Land Cruiser and some safari operating costs are shared, the per-person price generally becomes lower as more people travel together.

Travel season: Accommodation rates can vary between low, shoulder, high and peak seasons, which may affect the final safari price.

Accommodation: Your choice of budget, mid-range or higher-category lodge or tented accommodation will influence the total cost.

Park and conservation fees: Tarangire National Park entrance fees and applicable Ngorongoro Conservation Area and crater fees form a significant part of the safari cost. Any official fee changes may therefore affect future rates.

Optional upgrades: Premium accommodation, airport transfers, additional nights and safari extensions can be arranged at an additional cost.

Private Safari – No Group Joining Required

This is a private 2-day Tanzania safari, meaning the safari vehicle and guide are reserved for your travelling party rather than shared with unrelated guests. The itinerary can also be customised according to your accommodation preference, arrival arrangements and onward travel plans.

Detailed 2-Day Tarangire & Ngorongoro Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arusha → Tarangire National Park → Karatu / Ngorongoro

Your 2-day Tarangire and Ngorongoro safari begins with a morning pickup from your hotel in Arusha, followed by an approximately 2–2½-hour drive to Tarangire National Park in your private 4×4 safari Land Cruiser. After entering the park, begin your game drive through landscapes characterised by ancient baobab trees, open savannah and the Tarangire River, an important water source for wildlife.

Tarangire is particularly famous for its large elephant herds, while other possible sightings include giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, impalas, warthogs and lions. Leopards and cheetahs may also be encountered, although sightings are less predictable. Enjoy lunch during your safari before continuing with an afternoon game drive in another section of the park.

Later, leave Tarangire and drive towards the Karatu/Ngorongoro area, where you will check into your accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay.

Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Karatu / Ngorongoro Area

Day 2: Ngorongoro Crater Game Drive → Arusha

After an early breakfast, depart for the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and continue to the crater rim before descending approximately 600 metres onto the Ngorongoro Crater floor for your game drive. The crater’s relatively compact ecosystem supports a remarkable concentration of wildlife and offers an opportunity to see the Big Five, although no individual wildlife sighting can be guaranteed.

During your game drive, look for lions, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas, gazelles and elephants. Ngorongoro is also one of Tanzania’s notable areas for the endangered black rhino, and you may be fortunate enough to see one from a distance. Your guide will explore different habitats across the crater floor while looking for wildlife and photographic opportunities.

After a picnic lunch, ascend the crater wall and begin the journey back to Arusha, arriving later in the afternoon or early evening for drop-off at your hotel or agreed location.

Total Safari Route

Tarangire vs Ngorongoro – What You’ll Experience

Although Tarangire National Park and Ngorongoro Crater are both excellent wildlife destinations, they offer very different safari experiences. Tarangire is best known for its large elephant populations, ancient baobab trees and varied savannah landscapes, while Ngorongoro is renowned for its spectacular volcanic setting and high concentration of wildlife on the crater floor.

Which Is Better: Tarangire or Ngorongoro?

Neither destination is necessarily better—their differences are exactly why they work so well together on a 2-day Tarangire and Ngorongoro safari. Tarangire offers a classic East African game-drive experience among baobabs and elephant-rich landscapes, while Ngorongoro provides concentrated wildlife viewing within one of Tanzania’s most distinctive natural settings.

Combining both allows you to experience two contrasting Northern Tanzania ecosystems in only two days, making this itinerary particularly suitable for travellers who have limited time but still want a varied wildlife safari from Arusha.

Wildlife You May See on Your Tarangire & Ngorongoro Safari

Combining Tarangire National Park with the Ngorongoro Crater gives you opportunities to encounter a wide variety of East African wildlife across two very different habitats. Tarangire is particularly associated with elephants and savannah wildlife, while Ngorongoro offers excellent game viewing across the crater floor.

Can You See the Big Five?

This itinerary provides opportunities to see several members of Africa’s Big Five. Lions, elephants and buffaloes may be encountered in both destinations, while Ngorongoro Crater offers the possibility of seeing the endangered black rhino. Leopards occur in the region but can be difficult to spot during a short safari.

Wildlife moves freely through natural habitats, so no particular animal sighting can be guaranteed. Your professional safari guide will use local knowledge, recent sightings and conditions on the day to help maximise your game-viewing opportunities.

Best Time for a Tarangire & Ngorongoro Safari

The 2-day Tarangire and Ngorongoro safari can be enjoyed throughout the year, with each season offering a different experience. Tarangire is particularly rewarding during the dry months when wildlife concentrates around permanent water sources, while Ngorongoro Crater offers reliable wildlife viewing in every season.

June to October – Dry Season & Excellent Wildlife Viewing

This is one of the most popular periods for a Tarangire and Ngorongoro safari. As the landscape becomes drier, elephants and other wildlife are often drawn towards the Tarangire River and remaining water sources. Conditions are generally favourable for game viewing, although July to October can also be busier in Tanzania’s Northern Circuit parks.

November to December – Green Landscapes & Birdlife

The short rains usually bring greener landscapes to Northern Tanzania. Tarangire becomes increasingly lush, migratory birds add to the park’s already impressive birdlife, and the scenery can be excellent for photography. Ngorongoro Crater continues to offer rewarding wildlife viewing throughout this period.

January to March – Wildlife & Safari Combinations

January through March offers green scenery and good wildlife viewing in both destinations. This period is particularly attractive for travellers considering a longer itinerary because Tarangire and Ngorongoro can be combined with Ndutu and the Southern Serengeti during the wider wildebeest calving season.

April to May – Green Season & Fewer Visitors

April and May form part of Tanzania’s main rainy season. The landscapes are beautifully green and visitor numbers are generally lower, creating a quieter safari atmosphere. Rainfall can occasionally affect road conditions or game-drive plans, but both Tarangire and Ngorongoro remain open and wildlife viewing is still possible.

Expert Recommendation

For travellers whose main priority is Tarangire’s elephants and concentrated dry-season wildlife, July to October is particularly rewarding. For greener scenery, birdlife and fewer visitors, consider November to March. January to March is especially worthwhile if you plan to extend your safari to Ndutu and the Southern Serengeti for the calving season.

There is therefore no single best month for everyone. The best time depends on whether your priority is wildlife concentrations, green landscapes, photography, fewer visitors or combining Tarangire and Ngorongoro with a longer Northern Tanzania safari.

Accommodation Options for Your Tarangire & Ngorongoro Safari

Your overnight stay is arranged in the Karatu or Ngorongoro area, positioning you conveniently for an early start towards the Ngorongoro Crater on Day 2. Accommodation can be selected according to your preferred comfort level and safari budget.

LuxuryNgorongoro Serena Safari Lodge or similarNgorongoro Crater RimFull Board

Budget Accommodation

A budget lodge provides clean, comfortable accommodation with essential facilities and is a good choice for travellers who prefer to spend more of their budget on the safari experience itself. Karatu offers convenient access to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area the following morning.

Mid-Range Accommodation

Mid-range accommodation offers additional comfort, spacious rooms and attractive surroundings while keeping the safari reasonably priced. This is a good balance for couples, families and small groups looking for comfort without moving into the premium lodge category.

Luxury Accommodation

For travellers seeking a more exclusive experience, luxury accommodation can be arranged closer to or on the Ngorongoro Crater rim. Staying in this area can provide impressive scenery and convenient access for the following morning’s crater descent.

Accommodation is subject to availability at the time of booking. If a listed property is unavailable, we will propose a comparable alternative in a similar category and location for your approval before confirmation.

Who Is This Safari Best For?

This 2-day Tarangire and Ngorongoro safari from Arusha is best suited to travellers who want a rewarding Northern Tanzania wildlife experience but have limited time. Because the itinerary combines two major safari destinations in only two days, it works particularly well as a short standalone safari or as an addition to a longer Tanzania holiday.

This Safari Is Ideal For:

  • Travellers with only two free days – Experience two contrasting wildlife destinations without committing to a longer safari itinerary.
  • Couples – A private safari offers flexibility, personal guiding and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the experience together.
  • Honeymooners – Combine a short private wildlife safari with a longer beach holiday or another Tanzania experience.
  • Families – Private transport allows families greater flexibility with game-drive stops, meal breaks and daily timing.
  • First-time Tanzania visitors – Tarangire and Ngorongoro provide an excellent introduction to Northern Tanzania's wildlife, landscapes and safari experience.
  • Kilimanjaro climbers – Add the safari before or after a Mount Kilimanjaro trek without requiring many additional travel days.
  • Zanzibar travellers – Combine a Zanzibar beach holiday with a short mainland safari for both wildlife and beach experiences.

Who May Prefer a Longer Safari?

This itinerary may not be ideal for travellers whose main priority is the Serengeti, Great Migration viewing or a slower-paced safari experience. Two days involves relatively early starts, road travel and a full safari schedule.

If you have three or more days available, a longer Northern Tanzania itinerary can provide additional game-drive time and the opportunity to include destinations such as Serengeti National Park, Lake Manyara or Ndutu during the calving season.

For travellers with limited time, however, the 2-day Tarangire and Ngorongoro safari offers an excellent balance of wildlife, scenery and convenience from Arusha.

What to Pack for Your Tarangire & Ngorongoro Safari

For a two-day safari, you do not need to carry excessive luggage. Pack light and focus on comfortable clothing, sun protection and the essentials you will need during game drives.

  • Neutral, lightweight clothing – Comfortable shirts and trousers in neutral or earthy colours are practical for daytime game drives.
  • Comfortable closed shoes – Lightweight walking shoes or trainers are generally sufficient for this vehicle-based safari.
  • Sun protection – Bring sunscreen, sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat, as the sun can be strong during daytime game drives.
  • Warm layer or light jacket – Early mornings and the Ngorongoro highlands can feel considerably cooler than daytime conditions, so carry a fleece or light jacket.
  • Camera & binoculars – Useful for wildlife photography, birdwatching and viewing animals at a distance.
  • Personal medication – Carry any prescription medication you require, preferably in your hand luggage and in its original packaging.
  • Passport & travel documents – Keep your passport, visa documentation where applicable, travel insurance information and other essential documents secure and accessible.

Quick Packing Tip

A small soft-sided bag is usually more convenient for a short safari than a large hard-shell suitcase. Also bring a reusable water bottle, charging cable or power bank and spare camera batteries or memory cards if required.

For a two-day safari, packing light is usually the most comfortable option.

Guide & Tanzania Safari Expert Insights

A two-day Tarangire and Ngorongoro safari works best when the schedule is kept simple. With only two days available, we recommend concentrating on these two destinations rather than adding another park and reducing your actual game-viewing time.

Leave Arusha Early

We recommend departing Arusha at approximately 6:30–7:00 AM. An early start helps you reach Tarangire with plenty of the day remaining for game viewing and avoids turning Day 1 into mainly a transfer day. Your exact pickup time will be confirmed according to your hotel location and travel arrangements.

Why We Visit Tarangire on Day 1

Tarangire works particularly well as the first destination because it can be reached directly from Arusha and still allows meaningful game-viewing time on arrival. After the afternoon game drive, continuing to Karatu or the Ngorongoro area positions you much better for an early start the following morning.

Start Ngorongoro Early

On Day 2, we recommend an early breakfast followed by departure towards the Ngorongoro Crater. Entering the crater earlier generally gives you more useful game-viewing time before the return journey to Arusha. Your guide will plan the day around park regulations, road conditions and your accommodation location.

Wildlife Changes With the Seasons

During the drier months, particularly June to October, Tarangire can be especially rewarding as wildlife gathers around reliable water sources. During greener periods, animals may be more widely dispersed, but the scenery becomes lush and birdlife can be excellent.

Ngorongoro provides productive wildlife viewing throughout the year, although weather, animal movements and visibility vary from one visit to another.

Don’t Try to Add Too Much

For a genuine two-day safari, we generally do not recommend adding Serengeti to this itinerary by road. The additional driving would significantly reduce game-viewing time. Travellers wanting Serengeti are better served by extending the safari to at least three or four days.

Our Guide’s Advice

Keep your camera and binoculars accessible rather than packed in your luggage, carry a light jacket for the cooler Ngorongoro highlands, and tell your guide which wildlife or photography interests matter most to you. A private safari gives your guide greater flexibility to adapt the game drive to your interests and wildlife conditions on the day.

Expert Tip: If your schedule allows, spend the night before the safari in Arusha. Starting rested and leaving early gives you significantly more value from the first day than arriving on a morning flight and attempting to begin the safari immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions – 2 Days Tarangire & Ngorongoro Safari

1. Is 2 days enough for Tarangire and Ngorongoro?

Yes. Two days is enough to experience Tarangire National Park and Ngorongoro Crater when starting from Arusha. You can spend Day 1 game driving in Tarangire, stay overnight around Karatu or the Ngorongoro area, and explore the crater on Day 2 before returning to Arusha. The itinerary is relatively fast-paced, so travellers wanting more game-drive time should consider a 3- or 4-day safari.

2. How much does a 2-day Tarangire and Ngorongoro safari cost?

Our estimated 2026/2027 prices start from approximately USD 430 per person for six travellers sharing a private safari, while two travellers are approximately USD 620 per person. Solo and smaller-party rates are higher because vehicle and other operating costs are shared among fewer travellers. Final prices depend on travel dates, group size, accommodation and applicable park or conservation fees.

3. Is this safari private?

Yes. This is a private Tanzania safari, so your 4×4 safari Land Cruiser and professional guide are reserved exclusively for your travelling party. You will not be required to share the vehicle with unrelated travellers. This also provides greater flexibility during game drives and other parts of the itinerary.

4. What safari vehicle is used?

The safari is operated in a private 4×4 safari Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof designed for wildlife viewing and photography. East Africa Jungle operates this itinerary using a 4×4 safari Land Cruiser, including when budget or more affordable accommodation options are selected.

5. Can I see the Big Five on this safari?

There is an opportunity to see members of the Big Five, particularly during your Ngorongoro Crater game drive. Lions, elephants and buffaloes may be encountered, while Ngorongoro also provides an opportunity to see the endangered black rhino. Leopards are considerably less predictable. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.

6. Where will I stay overnight?

The overnight stay is normally arranged in the Karatu or Ngorongoro area, conveniently positioned for the following morning's Ngorongoro Crater visit. Accommodation can be arranged according to your preferred budget, including budget, mid-range and higher-category options, subject to availability.

7. What is the best time for a Tarangire and Ngorongoro safari?

The safari can be taken year-round. June to October is particularly rewarding for dry-season wildlife viewing in Tarangire, while November to March offers greener landscapes and excellent birdlife. Ngorongoro Crater provides rewarding wildlife viewing throughout the year.

8. How long is the drive from Arusha to Tarangire National Park?

The drive from Arusha to Tarangire National Park generally takes approximately 2 to 2½ hours, depending on traffic, road conditions and your exact pickup location. An early departure is recommended so you can maximise your game-drive time inside Tarangire.

9. Can this safari start from Kilimanjaro International Airport?

Yes. We can arrange pickup from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or accommodation near the airport. Depending on your international flight arrival time, we may recommend spending the previous night in Arusha before starting the safari early the following morning. Airport transfers can be included in your customised quotation.

10. Can I combine this safari with Serengeti or Zanzibar?

Yes. The itinerary can be extended to include Serengeti National Park, Lake Manyara, Ndutu or additional Northern Tanzania destinations. It can also be combined with a Zanzibar beach holiday. Tell us how many days you have available and your preferred travel dates, and we can customise the itinerary accordingly.

This 2 Days Tarangire & Ngorongoro Safari 2026/2027 itinerary has been written and reviewed by John Peter, an East Africa safari specialist with more than 16 years of experience in safari planning and tour operations across Tanzania, Kenya and the wider East African region.

His experience includes designing private wildlife safaris, coordinating cross-border East African itineraries, selecting safari routes and accommodation, and advising travellers on practical considerations such as driving times, seasonal wildlife movements and the number of days required for different safari circuits.

The itinerary has been reviewed to ensure that the route, daily activities, driving expectations, accommodation guidance and safari information are practical for travellers planning a short Tanzania safari combining Tarangire National Park and Ngorongoro Crater.
