Detailed 2 Days Tarangire & Lake Manyara Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Arusha → Tarangire National Park – Game Drive
Your safari begins with an early morning pick-up from your hotel in Arusha, followed by a scenic drive through northern Tanzania to Tarangire National Park. After completing the park-entry formalities, begin your first game drive across Tarangire’s open savannah, baobab-dotted landscapes and wildlife-rich areas surrounding the Tarangire River.
The park is particularly well known for its elephants, and you may also encounter giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, impalas, warthogs and, with some luck, predators such as lions. Your professional driver-guide will select game-viewing areas according to current wildlife movements and conditions. Enjoy lunch during the safari before continuing with an afternoon game drive.
Later, leave the park and drive to your lodge or tented camp around Mto wa Mbu, Lake Manyara or Karatu, positioning you conveniently for the following morning’s visit to Lake Manyara National Park.
Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in the Lake Manyara / Mto wa Mbu / Karatu area

Day 2: Lake Manyara National Park → Arusha
After breakfast, depart your accommodation for Lake Manyara National Park, a compact but ecologically diverse park situated beneath the dramatic Great Rift Valley escarpment. Begin your game drive through changing habitats that may include groundwater forest, woodland and open floodplain areas.
Depending on wildlife movements and seasonal conditions, look for elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, hippos, baboons, blue monkeys and numerous bird species. Lake Manyara has historically been associated with tree-climbing lions, although sightings are unpredictable and should not be expected on every visit. Your driver-guide will spend the game drive exploring productive wildlife areas while allowing time for photography and observation.

This safari can be enjoyed year-round, although wildlife viewing, vegetation and weather conditions change with the seasons.
| Travel Period | What to Expect |

| November–December | Short rains can bring greener landscapes, fresh vegetation and increased migratory bird activity. |

This safari includes one night's mid-range accommodation in the Karatu or Lake Manyara area, conveniently positioned between Tarangire National Park and Lake Manyara National Park. Wildlife in Tarangire & Lake Manyara National Parks
Although both parks support a wide variety of wildlife, Tarangire National Park and Lake Manyara National Park offer distinctly different safari environments. Tarangire is particularly renowned for elephants and wildlife gathering around the Tarangire River, while Lake Manyara combines forest, woodland, open areas and lake habitats that support primates and diverse birdlife.
| Tarangire National Park | Lake Manyara National Park |
|---|---|
| Elephants | Elephants |
| Lions | Lions |
| Giraffes | Giraffes |
| Zebras | Zebras |
| Wildebeest | Buffaloes |
| Buffaloes | Baboons |
| Impalas | Blue monkeys |
| Warthogs | Hippos |
| Leopards – possible sightings | Flamingos – seasonal |

What Makes Tarangire Special for Wildlife?
Tarangire is particularly famous for its elephants, which may be encountered individually or in family groups throughout the park. During the drier months, the Tarangire River and remaining water sources can attract concentrations of wildlife, including zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, giraffes and antelopes. Lions and other predators are also present, while the park's ancient baobab trees create one of northern Tanzania's most distinctive safari landscapes.
What Makes Lake Manyara Special for Wildlife?
Lake Manyara offers a contrasting wildlife experience beneath the Great Rift Valley escarpment. Its groundwater forest provides habitat for troops of baboons and blue monkeys, while elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras and hippos can also be encountered in different parts of the park. The lake and surrounding wetlands support rich birdlife, with flamingos sometimes present depending on seasonal conditions and water levels. Lions also inhabit the park, including individuals that may occasionally display the tree-climbing behaviour historically associated with Lake Manyara.
Wildlife note: Sightings are never guaranteed because animals move freely within their natural habitats. Wildlife concentrations, birdlife and animal behaviour vary according to season, rainfall, water availability and other natural conditions.
Tarangire vs Lake Manyara – What Makes Each Park Different?
Although Tarangire and Lake Manyara are part of Tanzania's Northern Safari Circuit, they offer noticeably different landscapes and wildlife experiences. Combining them gives travellers greater variety within a short two-day itinerary.
| Feature | Tarangire National Park | Lake Manyara National Park |
|---|---|---|
| Landscape | Baobab-dotted savannah, river valleys, woodland and seasonal wetlands | Groundwater forest, woodland, floodplains, lakeshore and Rift Valley escarpment |
| Known For | Large elephant populations, baobab trees and the Tarangire River | Scenic diversity, primates, birdlife and dramatic Rift Valley setting |
| Wildlife Highlights | Elephants, giraffes, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, antelopes and predators | Elephants, buffalo, giraffes, hippos, baboons, blue monkeys and zebra |
| Predators | Lions are regularly sought; leopards and cheetahs are also present but less predictable | Lions occur in the park, including the famous association with tree-climbing behaviour |
| Birdlife | Excellent woodland, grassland and riverine birding | Particularly rewarding for forest and wetland-associated birdlife |
| Safari Experience | Classic savannah safari with expansive wildlife-viewing areas | More compact safari through rapidly changing habitats |
| Best Combination | Strong big-game and elephant experience | Adds scenery, primates, wetlands and ecological variety |
Why Combine Tarangire and Lake Manyara?
Tarangire provides the stronger classic big-game safari experience, particularly for elephants, while Lake Manyara adds a contrasting landscape, primates, wetland habitats and Great Rift Valley scenery. Together, the two parks provide much more variety than visiting either destination alone, making them particularly well suited to a short safari from Arusha.
Who Is This 2-Day Tanzania Safari Best For?
This 2 Days Tarangire & Lake Manyara Safari is particularly suitable for travellers who want a short private wildlife experience from Arusha without committing to a longer Northern Tanzania itinerary.
Travellers with Limited Time
Ideal if you have only two days available for safari. The itinerary combines Tarangire National Park and Lake Manyara National Park while keeping the route practical, with one overnight stay in the Karatu/Lake Manyara area rather than returning to Arusha after Day 1.
Couples
A good option for couples who prefer a private 4×4 safari vehicle rather than a group-joining tour. The private arrangement allows greater flexibility for photography, wildlife viewing and stops during the game drives.
Families
The two-day duration can work well for families looking for a shorter safari experience. Children can enjoy varied wildlife, including elephants, giraffes, zebras, monkeys and numerous bird species, without the longer driving distances associated with reaching the Serengeti.
Before or After a Zanzibar Beach Holiday
This safari can be added before or after a Zanzibar beach holiday, giving travellers an opportunity to experience Northern Tanzania's wildlife without adding a lengthy safari itinerary. Airport transfers and additional nights in Arusha can be arranged according to your flight schedule.
What to Pack & Wear for Your 2-Day Tanzania Safari
For a 2 Days Tarangire & Lake Manyara Safari, pack light and focus on comfortable clothing, sun protection and a few useful wildlife-viewing essentials. Temperatures can be cool in the early morning and warmer during daytime game drives, so wearing layers is recommended.
Recommended Clothing
- Lightweight, breathable clothing in neutral colours such as khaki, beige, brown or olive
- Long trousers and long-sleeved shirts for cooler mornings and additional sun protection
- Light fleece, sweater or jacket for early morning departures and cooler evenings
- Comfortable closed shoes or trainers – specialist hiking boots are not necessary for standard game drives
- Sun hat or cap with good coverage
- Sunglasses with UV protection
Safari Essentials
- Sunscreen with a good SPF
- Camera or smartphone with sufficient storage
- Spare batteries, charging cable or power bank
- Binoculars for wildlife and birdwatching
- Small daypack for items required during game drives
- Personal medication and basic toiletries
- Insect repellent
- Reusable water bottle, if preferred
- Passport or identification documents required for your journey
Camera & Binoculars
A camera with a zoom or telephoto lens can be particularly useful for photographing wildlife from the safari vehicle. Binoculars are also valuable for observing distant animals and Lake Manyara's diverse birdlife.
Packing Tip
Because this is only a 2-day/1-night safari, a small soft-sided overnight bag is usually sufficient. Avoid bringing unnecessary large luggage into the safari vehicle where possible, especially when several people are travelling together.

| Travelling with Children | Families with children are welcome. We can adjust stops and the pace of the safari where practical. Please provide the children's ages when requesting a quotation. |

Guide Travel Insights
A 2 Days Tarangire & Lake Manyara Safari is a practical choice for travellers with limited time who still want to experience different landscapes and wildlife habitats in northern Tanzania. I recommend leaving Arusha early on Day 1 so you can enjoy a full and unhurried game drive in Tarangire.
In Tarangire National Park, look beyond the search for lions. Elephants are one of the park's main attractions, while the baobab trees, seasonal river and open savannah create an excellent setting for wildlife viewing. During the dry season, areas near dependable water sources can be especially productive.
For the overnight stay, I usually recommend Mto wa Mbu or Karatu instead of returning to Arusha. Staying nearby reduces driving time and makes it easier to reach Lake Manyara early the next morning.
At Lake Manyara National Park, allow time to experience the park's different habitats. The forest, primates, elephants, birdlife, lakeshore and Great Rift Valley scenery are all important parts of the visit, not just the possibility of seeing tree-climbing lions.
If you have an additional day, I recommend extending the itinerary to include Ngorongoro Crater. This adds another distinctive wildlife environment and creates a more complete northern Tanzania safari experience.
Travel Expert Insights
A two-day safari combining Tarangire and Lake Manyara is best suited to travellers who want a short introduction to northern Tanzania without committing to a longer circuit. These parks complement each other well: Tarangire is known for its large elephant herds and distinctive baobab landscapes, while Lake Manyara offers a more compact mix of forest, lakeshore and Rift Valley scenery.
The main advantage of this itinerary is the contrast between the two parks. Tarangire often feels open and expansive, with wildlife spread across broad savannah and seasonal river areas. Lake Manyara provides a different atmosphere, with denser vegetation, varied birdlife and habitats that can change noticeably within a relatively short drive.
This safari is also a sensible option for travellers arriving in Arusha or continuing towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Spending the night around Mto wa Mbu or Karatu helps connect the two parks efficiently and avoids using valuable safari time on a return journey to Arusha.
I would choose this itinerary for a first short safari, a family trip with limited holiday time or as an introduction before a longer Tanzania adventure. Travellers who want more time for wildlife viewing, a greater chance of seeing a wider range of animals or a visit to the Ngorongoro Crater should consider adding at least one extra day.
Combine Your Tarangire & Lake Manyara Safari With...
Have more than two days in Tanzania? This safari can be extended to include other Northern Circuit destinations or combined with a beach holiday. We recommend keeping the extension practical based on your available time and travel route.
Ngorongoro Crater
Add Ngorongoro Crater to create a 3-day Northern Tanzania safari. From the Karatu area, continue to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area for a crater game drive before returning to Arusha. This is one of the easiest and most practical extensions to the 2-day itinerary.
Serengeti National Park
Extend your safari to Serengeti National Park for a longer 4–5-day Northern Circuit experience. Adding Serengeti provides more game-drive time and the opportunity to explore one of Tanzania's largest and most celebrated wildlife ecosystems.
Zanzibar Beach Holiday
Combine your wildlife safari with a Zanzibar beach holiday. After returning to Arusha, continue to Zanzibar by air for several days of beaches, relaxation, Stone Town or other island experiences. This works particularly well for couples, families and travellers wanting both safari and beach.
Kilimanjaro & Moshi
Combine the safari with Moshi or a Kilimanjaro experience before or after your wildlife tour. Depending on your available time, this could include a Kilimanjaro climb, a day trip around Moshi or an additional stay before continuing with your Tanzania journey.
Frequently Asked Questions – 2 Days Tarangire & Lake Manyara Safari
1. Is a 2-day Tarangire and Lake Manyara safari worth it?
Yes. A 2-day Tarangire and Lake Manyara safari is a good option for travellers with limited time who still want to experience two different Northern Tanzania wildlife areas. Tarangire offers baobab-dotted landscapes and is particularly known for elephants, while Lake Manyara offers groundwater forest, Rift Valley scenery, primates and diverse birdlife. If you have more time, adding Ngorongoro or Serengeti can provide an even broader safari experience.
2. How much does a 2-day Tarangire and Lake Manyara safari cost?
Our private 2 Days Tarangire & Lake Manyara Safari starts from USD 450 per person, based on six travellers sharing the safari vehicle. Current prices range from USD 1,200 for one solo traveller to USD 450 per person for six travellers. The final price depends on group size, travel dates, accommodation availability and any requested upgrades or extensions.
3. What animals can I see in Tarangire and Lake Manyara?
Tarangire is particularly known for elephants, and you may also encounter giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, impalas, warthogs and predators such as lions. Lake Manyara may offer sightings of elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, baboons, blue monkeys and hippos. Both parks support extensive birdlife, while flamingos may occur at Lake Manyara depending on seasonal conditions and water levels. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.
4. Is Tarangire or Lake Manyara better for wildlife?
The parks offer different experiences rather than one simply being better. Tarangire is generally the stronger choice for larger concentrations of wildlife and elephant viewing, particularly during the dry season. Lake Manyara is valued for its varied habitats, primates, birdlife and Great Rift Valley scenery. Visiting both allows you to experience these contrasting environments within a short safari.
5. What is the best time for a Tarangire and Lake Manyara safari?
The safari operates throughout the year. June to October generally offers excellent dry-season wildlife viewing, particularly in Tarangire as animals concentrate around available water sources. November to February can provide greener landscapes and rewarding birdlife, while March to May is the main green/rainy season, with fewer visitors but a greater possibility of heavy rainfall.
6. Where do we stay overnight?
The standard package includes one night's mid-range accommodation at Marera Valley Lodge or a similar property in the Karatu/Lake Manyara area. This location provides convenient access between Tarangire and Lake Manyara and avoids returning to Arusha after the first day's safari. Higher-end and luxury accommodation upgrades can also be arranged on request.
7. Is this a private or group-joining safari?
This package is operated as a private safari. You will have your own 4×4 safari vehicle and professional driver-guide rather than joining unrelated travellers. This provides greater flexibility with game viewing, photography and stops during the journey.
8. What type of safari vehicle is used?
The safari is operated in a 4×4 safari Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, providing elevated wildlife viewing and photography opportunities during game drives. Your professional safari driver-guide accompanies you throughout the two-day itinerary.
9. Can I start or finish the safari at Kilimanjaro International Airport?
Yes. Transfers from or to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) can be arranged according to your flight schedule. The standard package is based on pickup and drop-off in Arusha, so airport transfers should be requested when booking and may involve an additional charge. We recommend providing your flight details in advance so the safari timing can be planned appropriately.
10. Can I add Ngorongoro Crater or Serengeti to this safari?
Yes. This itinerary can be extended to include Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti National Park or both, depending on how many additional days you have available. It can also be combined with a Zanzibar beach holiday. East Africa Jungle can customise the route, accommodation and transfers according to your preferred travel dates and overall Tanzania itinerary.
